Oscars 2010 Hairstyle & Makeup: Rachel McAdams

Monday, March 08, 2010

Rachel McAdams looked stunning last night at the 2010 Oscars. This just in, the beauty breakdown to achieve Rachel McAdams' Academy Awards hair and makeup looks.

Makeup

Rachel's sister, makeup artist Kayleen McAdams created Rachel's makeup concept. Kayleen's inspiration: "We chose our colour palette based on the water colour look of Rachel’sdress. There was a wash of cool tones in the dress, blue, green, purple, pink so we wanted the eye, cheek and lips to all have this same watercolour sheerness to it."

How to get Rachel McAdams' makeup look: For Rachel’s eyes, Kayleen used a combination of grey and pink shades. On the lid, she used CHANEL Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Fountain. She kept the grey on the outer corners of the lid and underneath the eye. She used the rose gold shade in the CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Spices up to the brown bone and along the lid. To finish it off, Kayleen used CHANEL Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Slate in the inner corners of the eye, and followed up with two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir.

She kept the lips very simple with CHANEL Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Rose Comete, a beautiful light pink shade, and a bit of CHANEL Glossimer in Futile to accentuate the lips but keep the focus on the eyes.

Hair

Sebastian Stylist Design Team Member Thomas Dunkin styled Rachel's tresses to complement her pastel watercolor-print strapless couture gown. The voluminous texture of Rachel’s bun evoked a spring-time look that is effortlessly chic and breathtakingly beautiful.

How to get Rachel McAdams' Oscars 2010 hairstyle:
  • Start by applying Sebastian Professional Liquid Gloss to slightly damp hair.
  • Blow dry hair straight with a large round bristle brush to give hair a smooth, polished base and voluminous texture from which to start styling.
  • Brush hair back and put in a ponytail just above the occipital bone. Secure with bobby pins.
  • Backcomb the ponytail and start to smooth the hair under using Sebastian Professional Re-
  • Shaper hairspray, securing with bobby pins. Do this until all of the hair is tucked under and secured.
  • Apply Sebastian Professional Craft Clay to the top and sides of the head for a textured effect rather than a perfectly-groomed finish.
  • Finish the look with Sebastian Professional Re-Shaper hairspray and gently massage the whole look to give it a disheveled, modern feel.

What did you think of Rachel's red carpet look?

Best Oscars 2010 Hairstyles and Beauty Trends

The red carpet moment of the year, the 2010 Oscars is like the prom night of Hollywood. From Twilight-pale beauties (yay for embracing copy-paper white complexions and eschewing the ubiquitous orange spray tan) to Veronica Lake waves and lashes for days, five celebrity hairstyle and makeup looks in particular blew our hair back.

Sandra Bullock

Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock wore a sleek, strong side-parted hairstyle that brought out the reflective shine of her brunette locks. The ends of her hair were softly waved for a bit of oomph. Pinky-red lips, a defined brow and dramatic lashes rounded out the look.

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet channeled Old Hollywood glamor perfectly with her lightened blonde hairstyle. Peach-pink lipstick and blush complimented her sexy-than-usual hairstyle. Mauve eyeshadow enhanced by major lashes complete the effect. We're loving Kate's unexpected turn from her typical demure beauty look.

Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana was, once again, a red carpet favorite with her volumized updo hairstyle and smokey eye and nude lip combination. Zoe's simple, yet elegant drop diamond earrings add a sense of occasion to her subtly elegant hairstyle and makeup. Tight, close-to-the-lashes black liner and a glossed up lip make this beauty look infinitely wearable.

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz brought her beauty A-game this time. No stranger to a red lip, this time Cameron paired hers with a bouncy waved hairstyle pulled over to one shoulder and minimal eye makeup, save for a flirty fringe of lashes.Softly pink cheeks warm up this fun and flirty Oscar look.

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams can always be counted on to bring the beauty. This season, Rachel sparkled in watercolor-inspired pink eyeshadow that was tempered with a touch of slate shadow near the inner corners of the eye. Rachel even commissioned her sister, makeup artist Kayleen McAdams to create her makeup look. An updo hairstyle with ample volume at the roots completed the look.

Amanda Seyfried's Celebrity Hairstyle Virtual Makeover

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Amanda_Seyfried_Before.jpg

I'll just say it: Amanda Seyfried is gorgeous. The girl looks like a doll. The quintessential cheerleaderesque blonde has proven her range as an actress with her complicated character Sarah Henrickson on Big Love. Though Gretchen Wieners couldn't pull it off, I'd argue that Amanda's character Karen Smith did make fetch happen. I'm constantly blown away by Amanda's sleuth ability to pick the perfect medium pink lipsticks to compliment her pale complexion. While I'd posit that her hair is the only reason to watch her latest movie Dear John, there's zero follicular variation throughout the movie. Amanda also doesn't change her 'do much when she glams it up on the red carpet. It's gorgeous hair--hair I covet, even--but it's always the same old, same old with her. Frankly, you're boring me, Amanda. Let's throw you in the makeover studio and see how you'd look in some edgier 'dos, 'kay?

AmandaS_AnneH_Heist.jpg

Anne Hathaway's long, angled bob would give innocent Amanda a small amount of street cred--she currently has all the rough edges of a Skittle. Now that's a style even Mean Girls' Janis Ian would appreciate for its slightly rockin' effect.

AmandaS_RachelM_Heist.jpg

Rachel McAdams' casual boho-braided updo would give Amanda a softer hippie vibe that would be a welcome change of pace from her usual Breck Shampoo commerical hair.

Reese Witherspoon's wispy bangs add a playfulness to Amanda's signature very long hair.

What do you think of Amanda Seyfried's virtual makeovers? Which do you like best?

Rachel McAdams' Bodacious Braid Hairstyle At The Sherlock Holmes London Premiere

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Allow me to be the Beauty Nostradamus for the nonce: I predict that Malibu Barbie braids will dominate in 2010. Exhibit A: The Brooke Shields circa Blue Lagoon braid designed by REDKEN style expert Guido Palau at the Alexander Wang Spring 2010 Collection (see photo below).

And now, we have Exhibit B: Rachel McAdams' gorgeous side braid at the world premiere of Sherlock Holmes. I'm so into replicating this look, stat, now that my hair is finally long enough for side braids. Thank you, Biotin. Here's the beauty breakdown:

Sebastian Stylist Design Team Member Thomas Dunkin
styled actress Rachel McAdams’ tresses to complement her Grecian-inspired gown for a red carpet look that radiated grace and glam. I love Sherlock’s leading lady’s asymmetrical, loosely textured side braid styled by Thomas Dunkin.

How to recreate Rachel’s red carpet look at home:
  1. Start by applying a volumizing product like Sebastian Professional Texturizer to wet hair.
  2. Blow dry in sections, and pin each section in medium and large sized Velcro rollers throughout whole head and allow to set for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Allow to cool then take down rollers, and spray hair with a dry shampoo for added texture.
  4. Emulsify a small dab of Sebastian Professional Microweb Fiber between palms and run through top of hair. Backcomb front section and manipulate for height and volume. Secure with pins.
  5. French braid bottom half of hair starting behind left ear and pin random remaining pieces into braid for haphazard, playful positioning.
  6. Finish the look with Sebastian Professional Shaper Fierce for tousled movement and controlled hold.

What do we think?
