Achieve Promtastic HAIR with hairdo

Just in time for April proms, I have to let you in on a little promtastic hair secret. I am living for hairdo Salon Clip-In Hair Extensions ($88) from Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves. They come in several lengths from 10" to 23" and also in two textures, wavy and straight. Yours truly has been rocking the 23" wavy in the privacy of my own home for now... but I'm TOTES packing it up when I go to the Bahamas in June when I'll be a bridesmaid in my friend Amber's wedding. I'm hoping my stylist there can somehow incorporate them into my 'do. They approach the city limits of Cheesyville for everyday wear, but for special nights out, weddings, PROMS, and the like, they're simplement parfaits. They add luscious length and/or volume to your own hair and are virtually undetectable because you clip it in under your regular hair.

The hairdo Clip-In Hair Kit Includes
:
*A hair extension in the length/texture of your choice - it consists of one multi-level, contoured piece that creates an easy, fashionable style without the hassle of working with several individual wefts. Contouring fits the shape of the head so that the wearer's hair can be pinned up underneath the piece. Seven pressure-sensitive clips around the perimeter ensure a secure and comfortable fit. I've tried it out and it's definitely comfortable. Each color is made up of 12 differing hair shades for a very natural look.
* 2 "duck-bill" hair clips - for use in attaching the extension
* Illustrated Styling Guide - takes you step-by-step through the attachment process for goof-proof results

16 Multi-tonal Color Choices:
Ebony
Chestnut
Swedish Blonde
Golden Wheat
Dark Auburn
Dark Chocolate
Midnight Brown
Chocolate Copper
Dark Copper
Honey Ginger
Glazed Strawberry
Golden Walnut
Ginger Brown
Ginger Blonde
Buttered Toast
Sandy Blonde

Now, I do wish there were a few more color choices. I found one that's close (Ginger Blonde), but not quite the right color. For $88 though, it's a pretty decent selection.

Have you tried hairdo? What did you think?

Q&A: Prom Eye Makeup

Sunshine asks:
Q: I'm 18 and my prom is this Friday, April 18th. I was thinking about getting my makeup done, but I've had a few too many unfortunate experiences with getting it done professionally. So, I decided that I'd do it myself.
My dress is silky black with silver as the secondary color. Any ideas as to what I should do with my eye makeup?

A: Sunshine, what a phenom question. I am loving that you're wearing a silky black slash silver dress on the big night. I'm NERV because your prom is in five minutes and I'm on 15 diff deadlines right now, but this blog was born from procrastination and also? You had me at "prom." I love a prom. I have a few recommendations for you, OBV.

Thierry Mugler Regard Stellaire in Starry Night
I'm living for this quartet of smoky seduction. It includes a white shimmer shade, a rich sparkly charcoal, a neutral beige and a straight up flat black. I'd recommend lining your eyes with the black using a liner brush, use the white up by the brow bone (SPARINGLY) to highlight, and then apply the charcoal to the outer corner and on the lid below the crease for a siren-worthy smoky grey eye.

Now, I realize the link I've sent you to is for Sephora in France because this shadow isn't sold in the US until May. Since you can't wait that long, I recommend Bourjois Paris' Eye Shadow Trio in Les Argents ($19) which is pictured at left.

Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc in Orchid Mosaic ($38)
This 4-color palette features a shimmery range of 2 pinks, a champagne and a plum. It includes a mirror (don't think about going promming without one) and is encased in Laura's signature purple compact packaging. I'd recommend using the lightest pink all over and shading with the plum in the outer corners and on the lower lid. Line eyes with ck Calvin Klein Ultimate Edge Gel Eyeliner ($16) in African Voilet, a deep plum.

Lastly, I deeply recommend false eyelashes to add a sense of occasion. My faves are Revlon Fantasy Lengths Self-Adhesive Eyelashes. They're sold at drugstores for a mere $7 and last the whole night. Best of all? They're reusable. Wear the flirty length and channel Twiggy.

Have THE most fun at your prom, Sunshine! Pity anyone with the misfortune of standing next to your gorge self in pics. Report back and tell us how it went!

xoxo,
Fabulista

P.S. Stay tuned for promtastic hair recommendations later this week.

Promtastic Products

Have I mentioned that I adore all things prom-related? I do. It was my DREAM to be the beauty editor of a teen magazine… mostly because I wanted to write the hell out of the beauty section in the magazine's PROM ISSUE.

My own prom experiences were pretty faboo. I attended my junior prom with my BF at the time, Bob. The whole situation was very high school-girl-in-suburbia. He was VERY pretty (prettier than I… one of the many reasons we broke up and I have since only been able to stomach very virile dudes) and provided me with a gorge multi-colored corsage that matched my cinderella-at-the-ball blue gown to perfectsh. My fabulous gay friend Ted escorted me to my senior prom where I wore a champagne Jessica McClintock to-die gown and he wore a coordinated champagne vest. We talked massive trash on Bob and his new GF whilst dancing and surprisingly, it turned out to be better than the previous prom.

For each prom, I would allocate, naturally, about 4 hours for Pre-Prom Beautification. There have been some pretty mage developments in makeup since my prom. Since this poll indicated that there are at least a few under 18 gals who are BBJ readers, this post is for them. I've compiled my favorite promtastic products that I only wish were available in 1998.

The Heatherette for M.A.C. Collection
just SCREAMS prom to me. I'll admit it: when I first saw photos of the collection online, it looked a little... Planet Unicorn. But upon trying it out for myself, I've identified some key adorably-packaged pieces that when used SEPARATELY are totes promtastic and are just dying to be packed away in your little prom clutch.

Heatherette Lipstick in Melrose Mood is so very Elle Woods pink. I envision it with a sultry smoky eye and a 60s updo. Very diva, girls. VERY diva.

Heatherette Lipglass in Style Minx - the title says it all, doesn't it? This saucy hot pink number provides just enough vanilla-scented shine. I'd pair it with some serious Angelina Jolie-esque winged liner.

I would carry this Heatherette Trio 1 in my purse with me as well - it boasts an absolutely enormous mirror. Your friends will be dying for you to pass it over during the buffet dinner. The shadow trio houses three delectable shades in sparkly pink, turquoise, and blue-flecked dusky black. The last shade would be phenom applied as a vampy liner with some water or some Paula Dorf Transformer, which transforms powder shadow into liquid liner.

Are you attending a prom? Tell me everything about it in the comments, from the dress to the inspiration. Start at the beginning, end at the end. Go.
