Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Miss Sixty

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

I ALWAYS cover Miss Sixty. I'm like Rain Man about it. This year's backstage beauty inspiration didn't disappoint.

NO FRIZZ
technology made its fashion week debut backstage at Miss Sixty this season. Celebrity stylist Ward Stegerhoek headed up the Living Proof team to design the look – Rocker Chic. "It's a softer, girly version of Rock and Roll," Ward explained.

I loved the knot he created in the front of the hair. It feminized the vibe perfectly. Ward used the NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray to style the hair and then used the NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Cream to twist the hair and make it appear rough and stringy. NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray was used to hold the curl in place. NO FRIZZ Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Cream was also used.

Lisa Butler for MAC drew mainly from a purple palette. She started with a black pencil liner (MAC Grease Paint Stick - it's movable and then sets) on the top and bottom lid and dotted it between the lashes for depth before pressing on MAC Eye Shadow in Violet Trance, an electric blue/purple, on top of the pencil. Violet Pigment was dusted underneath the eyes. MAC Eye Shadow in Young Pink was also brushed onto the lids, which provided a soft black effect "for structure on the socket," Lisa said. She then feathered out the shadow to soften the look. Skin and lips were left as-is. Brows were groomed, but were neutral.

At Miss Sixty, the hair was inspired by a shiny, cleaned-up Patti Smith. Very rock and roll, if you will. Head stylist Leonardo Manetti used a 1" curling iron in alternating sections (totally random) to create varying areas of movement. GHD Miracle Mist, a leave-in conditioner was used to achieve health and shine. For volume, GHD Maximize Mousse was massaged onto the roots before the stylist blow-dried the hair in sections. Hair was finished off with GHD Reflection Spray, which was rubbed between hands before running a bit through the models' hair.

Makeup was based on a 70s powerful woman. "Think Jane Fonda, a heroic woman," said makeup artist Romy Soleimani for MAC Cosmetics. The look was a round-shaped smoky eye with black liner and a black pigment layered on top of it. Loose blue-violet glitter (MAC Purple Duo Reflect) was dusted onto lids. The powder's consistency is "so fine, it almost looks wet," explained Romy. Lots of MAC's upcoming mascara (called Dazzle) was layered on in thin coats, then with a thicker hand on both top and bottom lashes. The mascara brush was held vertically when applied to the bottom lashes. Cheeks were minimally soft. Brows were tamed with a light brown gel, while lips were lightly defined with a soft pink stain and a pale pink glittery gloss called Baby Sparks.

Hi, dolls!

Backstage, I had the opportunity to interview Gucci Westman (!) who was working with MAC Cosmetics backstage at the Miss Sixty show. "The inspiration was based on a combination of Joan Jett and Bohemian themes," Westman explained. She used black eyeliner, rich blue eyeshadow (which she's applying to the model, above) and a lot of mascara. Blush was a minimal beige. Gucci herself is gorge in person! I couldn't believe she wasn't going to accompany the models down the catwalk. During the interview, Gucci and the model joked about how they both used to love baby blue eyeshadow and mascara when they were younger.

Bumble and bumble, one of my faves, worked on hair for the show.
The Inspiration: 1970s Glamour.

How it was Accomplished: A lot of center parts, long, flowing hair with kicky curl at the ends, accomplished with a large curling iron. No Bumble and bumble thickening spray was used, just Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion (A Fabulista Fave since 02!) Extensions were woven in for bulk, not length. The look was finished off with Bumble and bumble Big Shine and Does it All hairspray.

Nails were polished with Creative Nail Design's Nail Gloss, a translucent medium pink sheer, from their Plexi Pop collection.

I had no problem skipping the beginning of the Super Bowl to report on this (OBV), but I am happy that the Giants just won!
