Lipstick is back! For you prom-goers, perhaps you've never EVEN owned a lipstick since it's been a decade since the solid lip bullet's hayday, but like all things '90s, it's back with a vengence. Nude lips paired with smokey eyes are just one of the beauty trends we see at major red carpet events like the 2010 Oscars. And they're fabulous for your sultry prom moment. Here, my newest favorite nude lipsticks, lip pencils and balms to help you channel a nude lip moment à la Kim Kardashian at your prom.
Hourglass Cosmetics Prodigy Lip Gloss in Eden
Flat-out fabulous packaging: The "tube" fits in your back pocket or a clutch. I love its water-resistant formula, enhanced with Vitamin E to prevent chapping.
The situation: It's prom night and your monthly visitor has invited itself as your most unwelcome guest (and sans corsage). In the words of Stephanie Tanner, how rude! You now have some unsexy cargo to tote to prom in your mini clutch. How can you carry your Glampax in style? Read more....
Seventeenmag.com's beauty guru Kelli Acciardo gets the deets from REDKEN's Jenny Balding on how to add hair extensions on your own. Prom time is the PERFECT time for extensions and now, you can achieve them easily at home, on the cheap. Check it out!

Dolls, for prom, your choice of body wash is MAJOR.
Remember last year when I told you the story of how my irritating brother used the LAST of my discontinued glamazing Sparkling Pear Bath & Body Works Shower Gel. It was devastating, to say the least. But high school gals today have a MYRIAD of easy-on-your-wallet options that smell divine, are so NOT discontinued and cleanse skin thoroughly without overdrying. Here, my faves: Read more...
So prom-goers, let's be real with each other. It's going to be a long night. There are going to be post-prom parties. There's going to be ample high school drama. And after all the shenanigans have come to an end, you're going to be in no shape to go through your normal nightly skin care routine. But, as we all know, it's the biggest beauty sin to sleep sans face washing. Right?
Enter Lumene Sensitive Touch Wipes. What's great about these Finnish (yes, Finnish! More about their Finnish-ness in a sec--after I FINISH) gems is that they're designed to remove your eye makeup. I find that cleansing wipes are good for removing the first layer of dirt, debris and foundation from skin. But they don't tackle my eye spackle if you know what I mean, and I think you do. High school gals are nothing if not eye makeup lovers and prom is the end-all, be-all of high school eye makeup. Am I right? So before you step out of your Gunne Sax for Jessica McClintock, sweep one of these bad boys over your mug and you'll be free and clear. It may take a second wipe to complete the job, but I find two of these work better than five of any other wipe I've tried.
Lumene is actually sold in department stores in Scandinavia but is sold at scandalously low prices at drugstores in the U.S. Their products are comprised of amazing natural Arctic ingredients indigenous to the northern wilderness like Arctic cloudberry, lingonberry and blueberry. Each are harvested only once a year by hand and pack a powerful punch of antioxidants in a teensy package. Get involved
A pack of ten Lumene Sensitive Touch Cleansing Wipes will set you back just $3. Lumene Sensitive Touch Cleansing Wipes are available at CVS.

The new Sweet Thing Collection from Maybelline summon memories of flannel clad, Doc Martin adorned days of the late '90s when I myself was attending a prom. This very Hard Candy circa 1996 collection from Maybelline is just MADE for a prom. The sweet colors evoke spring like nothing else can and each shade is more wearable than the next. Best of all, when they claim it dries in 50 seconds, they sure aren't kidding. I timed that shit with my stop watch application on my iPhone. And it lasts a full week with only minor wear and tear at the ends.
My personal fave shades are Minty (mint green, in the middle) and Pie in the Sky (hot purple).
At $4 each, you'll want to indulge in the entire set. The Maybelline Sweet Thing Collection is available at drugstores and grocery stores nationwide in March 2010.

Gals, remember last year's special theme week called Finest Hour Week? Well get ready for the sequel, starting Monday.
Obviously, the finest hour I'm referencing is my favorite thing in the universe, PROMS. Click here and here for even more prom articles. P.S. Teens, do you have questions? Send them to me stat, and I'll do my best to get them answered this week! I'll be sharing makeup, body and hair product recommendations for the biggest of big days. In the meantime, enjoy this Teen Witch clip featuring the song you've never heard anywhere else, Finest Hour. So sad about the passing of Zelda Rubinstein who played Madame Serena, right?
See you Monday for Finest Hour Week!

So, it's all well and good that I've told you what to put ON your face, but let's be real with each other. It's going to be a late night, and you're going to be in no condition to take it off responsibly, right? And you don't want to spend the EARTH on makeup removal. I get it. And so does Clean & Clear.
Enter their Oil-free Makeup Remover($6) and Makeup Dissolving Foaming Cleansing Wipes. ($6) The former lifts makeup, dirt and oil effortlessly, leaving no oily, greasy residue in its wake. Cucumber extract and conditioners ensure your skin will be left soft, never tight nor itchy.
The latter is the perfect way to de-smoky eye, stat. It's the perfect middle ground between a simple get-it-the-F-off-my-grill wipe and a thorough face wash. Personally, I use wipes for removing makeup from my brushes (a little tip from my gal Marina at makeuplovesme), but these foamy iterations are so fantast at ridding me of even waterproof makeup that they earn a gold star in quick and easy pre-bed cosmetic eradification. They foam slightly, and yet don't make me feel as if I need to rinse.
And that's it, gals! Have a PHENOM PROM! Tell me all about it.
xoxo,
Amber
P.S. It's my blogaversary on Saturday, April 4! BBJ is turning 3. I'm a TODDLER!

Girls, I'm going to let you in on a little beauty industry secret. When it comes to commonly-used phrases beauty editors hear over and over, "You can just put it in your purse!" is at the TOP of the list. It's basically... a bunny eating a carrot. It's that cliche. Portability IS a bonus, obviously. There are many things that really are nice, light, and well-packaged. But sometimes we hear it about full-sized, regular stuff. I always think to myself that if I were really going to put everything in my purse that someone tells me I should... I'd be carrying a Samsonite around.
But something that REALLY IS perfect for toting in your tiny prom clutch? Space NK's Laughter Solid Perfume Compact($45). The compact is sleek, gorge and features a stealth mirror. I KNOW. How could you not bring it to the prom? And the scent itself is light, citrusy and airy. A solid perfume won't leak all over your bag (nor your date) so you can focus on other things. And, it's alchol-free, but I promise it's not lame. Lastly, you'll adore its plum plum totes fance velvet bag it lives in. Love, love, love.

Two perfectly prom-ready hair accessories you must involve into your 'do:
This slinky-esque gorge spiral Zannclip hair clip($21-23) is plated in 24K gold or platinum. It's casual enough for day, but special enough to go along with you to prom. And, unlike many hair accessories it STAYS PUT. Best of all, when you decide to take your hair down, it doesn't leave that unsightly dent like so many other barrettes and elastic bands. If it breaks, the company will replace it or give you a full refund including your shipping. I love it in gold.
Love has a name and it's the Delight Silver Shade Headband by Swarovski ($125). Not to be dramatic, but GET THIS IN YOUR LIFESTYLE. I love it with a slapdash (only to the casual observer, you obviously will labor over it) pony with loads and loads of '60s volume at the crown. Or, it would look supes prett with long, flowing Gisele locks. Its elastic bottom won't give you a migraine, nor will it allow it to slip off mid-dance.

I'm all about splurging for occasions that warrant a little luxury, and the prom is most certainly one of them. I actually saved the last of my even-at-the-time discontinued Bath & Body Works Sparkling Pear Body Wash for use at my senior prom so I could feel extra spesh on my extra spesh night. Unfortunately, My brother had actually used up MOST of it, not realizing that it was a precious commodity (probably to sit around the house playing video games) and I was DEVA, as you can imagine. Thankfully, I'd had JUST enough for prom day.
Anywho, $50 a bottle is a lot for a high school gal to spend on shower gel, but this one is so, so worth it. Jo Malone's new Lotus Blossom & Water Lily Shower Gelis fresh, clean and yields loads of luxe lather--ESSENTIAL for sparkling danceteria-ready skin. Its light fragrance is vaguely Asian, moderately sophisticated (though not too too, you're still in high school!), and utterly invigorating. The formula's blend of mandarin, sacred lotus blossom, bamboo and aloeswood encourages energy. Along with Dark Amber & Ginger Bathing Soak ($75) it's part of the Kohdo Wood Collection available starting TODAY on jomalone.com and on-counter. Kohdo BTW, is the ancient Japanese art of incense appreciation. It's a cultural adventure in addition to an olfactory one.
Sayonara,
Amber

Perfect for prom: Urban Decay introduced their scandalous new Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss this month. It's totes reminiscent of those naked dude pens so popular at such stores as Spencer's Gifts (remember? In the MALL?).
Inside the double-sided cap is a photo of one of eight hot guys. With just the flick of your wrist, you can undress them down to their undershorts, in the words of the fabulous Blanche Devereaux (and each is pictured both front and back)! Thanks to Fashion Binge's Tamron for reminding me of that key Blanche quote, BT dubs ("Know him? Why, I left my undershorts on his radiatah!")
Are you ready for the best part? The lip gloss vial is decorated with pheromone-laced ink. I'm kind of a sucker for pheromones, dolls. I guess everyone is, isn't that the point? Undetectable to smell, releasing even the slightest amount of pheromones enhances mood and sexual attraction. Give the tube a little rub to release the magic. You know it, I know it, and Brenda Walsh certainly knew it: There's no better time than prom for some pheromones. Just saying.
Available in eight shades, this highly-pigmented lip gloss formula even plumps. It contains Hyaluronic Spheres (found naturally in the body) to improve cellular function, prevent dehydration, and fill in lines and wrinkles. Each shade is semi-sheer, but UD designed them with multiple finishes: cream, shimmer or sparkle.
Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss is available for $18 at Sephora.com, ULTA and select Macy’s West locations.

Celebrity makeup artist Karen Mitchell created Vanessa Hudgens’ Kids' Choice Awards look with budget-friendly Neutrogena products. She shared her methodology (to use a work-esque word) for us below. Wouldn't this look be phenom for prom? I'm a POET.
“Vanessa’s look was really fun and more casual then most red carpet events. Her accessories and outfit were really rock and roll inspired so we went for a fun, smokey eye and a pretty shimmer to the skin,” says Mitchell
Face:
“For her glowing skin we began with Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Liquid Makeup in Tan, and 3-in-1 Concealer for Eyes in Medium. Then, I set that with the Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation in natural beige.”
Eyes:
“By applying a bit of concealer to the lid first, you can achieve a great base for eyeshadow. We used the Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Concealer Kit in Medium on Vanessa. It gives a really natural coverage. For the eyeshadow, I chose the Neutrogena Nourishing Quad in Moonlit violet. I used the silvery highlight shade in the palette on the inside of the top and bottom of the eye. The crease (wine) and accent (smoke) colors from the quad were blended at the outside of the lid corners blending out and up into the crease. I also lined the eye underneath with the crease wine color.”
“Then I lined the entire eye with Neutrogena Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black, and I brushed brows with a soft toothbrush and filled in with accent color from the Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Quad in Sea Shell – it made the perfect brow powder. Finally, we curled the lashes and added four coats of Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara in Carbon Black.”
Lips: “To finish her look, Vanessa’s lip color is a layer of MoistureShine Lipstick in Sheer Luck and MoistureShine Gloss In Whisper.”

I LOVE Ted Gibson's Clip-in Hair Extensions ($164 right now on qvc.com). Check the video. P.S. Has anyone else noticed that I've subconsciously created an international hand gesture for flat-iron? I ALWAYS use it. It's ridic.
Oh, hi! I hope you had an excellent weekend and are ready for the first installment of Finest Hour Week, a week-long series where I showcase my favorite prom-ready products!
My first prom rec is It Cosmetics' Get Wet($32), a waterproof highlighter and bronzer. What? Waterproof? YES! Is there a more apropos venu for waterproof bronzer and highlighter (other than Spring Break, of course) than a prom? I think not.
This compact comes in a fun (albeit slightly scandalous) box of a compact which includes large helpings of the bronzer, sandy shimmery blush, and white shimmer highlighter. Its size is perf for using all over your bod, not just your mug. Shoulders need waterproof tanning, too. And? I tested it out and it really does withstand water and yet is removable with soap and water or makeup remover.
Check my latest vlog about L'Oreal's Clean Artiste Makeup Remover Pen! It's only $11 and removes all makeup mishaps. Apologies for my pajamas and bad camera angle. Next time it'll be better! Still figuring out the best place to tape vids in the new stu stu studio.

Dolls, moving had made me a very low maintenance, non-glamorous version of myself. You can imagine how happy this made me (not at ALL is the answer). Because weeks of packing and then unpacking had rendered my manicures crapicures, I'd finally had to throw in the towel and go au natural. I think the only person who enjoys that less than I is my gal Michelle.
This weekend, I dedicated a large portion of my time for beautifying my lifestyle. First on the list was a DIY mani/pedi with my new fave spring shade, CHANEL Le Vernis Nail Colour in Orange Fizz. It's been a long time since I've been so obsessed with a hue that I wanted it on my tips AND my toes, but this one is worth it. It's the love child of creamsicle and peach in a glossy, opaque, creamy texture. My toes think they should be on the beach instead of on 23rd Street.
Yesterday, I headed over for my favorite diamond-in-the-rough stylist Matthew James at Sam Brocato to cut my hair for an economical $85. His blow-outs are the best. Even Sam's (the owner of the salon) wife Holly agrees. She came by to say hi while I was there and informed me that he'd done her mane, which looked quite fab and voloisturized. She also told me she'd gotten some extensions woven in simply for color. Great idea, n'est-ce pas?
Sam has some fantastic new products for curly hair, FYI. He sent me home with some of his sulfate-free (always! None of his prods have sulfates!) Curlkarma Curl Energizing Cream ($15). He also has a corresponding Curlkarma Shampoo and Conditioner that I can't wait to try as the weather gets warmer and I begin my straightening embargo.
Lastly, I took advantage of living solo and self-tanned after I'd exfoliated. I used a tip from my pal Dina: I slathered on the scrub before turning on the water in the shower, rubbed it in well, and THEN turned on the shower and rinsed off pre-cleansing. This ensures velvety-smooth skin as you aren't negating the whole process by having the product rinse off in the stream before it does its job. Genius. Now, I've done that with my facial scrubs, but never with my body versions. Do try it out; you'll love love love. I reaquainted myself with an old fave, Borghese Sali Esfoliante Salt Scrub ($38).
Oh, AND. Get excited for Finest Hour Week, starting manana! Finest Hour Week was named after this pivotal scene in one of my fave '80s movies, Teen Witch.
Obviously, the finest hour I'm referencing is my favorite thing in the universe, PROMS. Click here and here for last year's prom articles. P.S. Teens, do you have questions? Send them to me stat, and I'll do my best to get them answered this week! I'll be sharing makeup and hair tips for the biggest of big days. Is it weird that I'm 28 and I adore a prom but couldn't give a fig about weddings?
Parenthetically, did you catch Brad Powell (Dan GauthierIRL) from Teen Witch in LOST this season? He played Lapidus' ill-fated Ajira Airways co-pilot.
See you Monday for Finest Hour Week!
