Thank You for Bea-ing a Friend.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Gals, you know how much I adore me some Golden Girls. I was deeply deva to learn of Bea Arthur's passing on Saturday and felt that I just had to share some of my favorite Dorothy Zbornak quotes on BBJ. A bit late, but warranted, n'est-ce pas?

Slip on a gauzy caftan a la Dorothy, raise an eyebrow, maybe even bite your fist in aggravation and let's take a trip down memory lane.

Blanche: The Great Herring War?
Rose: Between the Lindstroms and the Johannsens.
Dorothy: Oh, THAT Great Herring War.

Dorothy: You'll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago which rendered her totally annoying.

Rose: Can I ask a dumb question?
Dorothy: Better than anyone I know.

Dorothy: [the girls visit a birthing center] What kind of idiot would want to give birth here?
Rose: This place makes me want to run out and get pregnant!

[Dorothy is solving a murder mystery--FROM MY FAVORITE EPISODE!!]
Dorothy: I think I see now how it happened - last evening, at dinner, when Miss McGlen saw Blanche give Kendall Nesbitt her key, she was furious. She dropped a steak knife into her purse...
Sophia: Big deal. I took a whole place setting.
Dorothy: NOT NOW, MA!

[Rose is up late, baking]
Rose: I couldn't sleep, so I whipped up a batch of Sverhoeven Crispies. It's a traditional midnight snack from St. Olaf dating back to Viking times.
Dorothy: Well, I guess after a hard night of pillaging and raping, a Viking would want a little something to go with his cocoa.

Blanche: Rose and I are taking a dirty dancing class.
Dorothy: Really.
Blanche: It's become quite popular since that movie came out.
Rose: What movie is that?
Dorothy: Lawrence of Arabia, Rose.

80s Ladies Week: NARS Nail Polish in Arabesque is Truly Outrageous

Friday, July 11, 2008

The inspiration for today's post? 80s cartoon-inspired doll Jem. Jem rocked sparkly pink like no other. That's why she came to mind INSTANTLY when I first received my bottle of NARS nail polish in Arabesque.

NARS Nail Polish in Arabesque ($16) is gorge, flirty pink fun. It's a sheer pink base with rounded, ruffle-cut pink glitter floating in it. It's a bit too sheer for me to wear by itself, so I pair it with a more opaque pink, like Essie Mademoiselle.

Wouldn't Jerrica wear this on a date with Rio (yes, you remember correctly. He did have purple hair.)?

80s Ladies Week: Nothing Comes Between me and my... L'Oreal HIP Liner.

Thursday, July 10, 2008

In the early 80s, back even before Banana Republic boasted a safari theme and stores were adorned with Jeeps and giraffes, there was Jordache, Sassoon, Sergio Valente, and, obv, Calvin Klein.

The inspired product is L'Oreal HIP Color Rich Cream Eyeliner in Midnight Blue ($12). It's a rich, designer jeans blue, most akin to a superhero hue. Perhaps even a Voltron blue. Like the D jeans trend itself, it lasts a while. Its creamy texture allows for ease of application, while the high intensity pigments deliver true color deposit. It comes with its own slanty brush for professional application.

80s Ladies Week: iGel, but Only in my Dreams

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

Picture it: 1987. I have one idol and her name is DEBBIE GIBSON. Enjoy my fave song of hers, if you will:

The summer this was the it song, I was at Spring House Day Camp in suburban PA. The first time I heard it, I was at this weekend sleepover where we were supposed to play SPIN THE BOTTLE. I was seven at the time, and totally and utterly scared to kiss a boy (wouldn't you be at seven? This camp was mildly fachachta, to say the least.) I distinctly remember telling my counselor that I wasn't down with kissing the boys right this MINUTE, but I was so very down with allowing her to swipe me down with some lipstick (which she was applying for all of us, pre-boy kissing.) Even at seven, even at CAMP, I still wanted in on the makeup.

The product inspired by this song? Obv, only one that could be applied while you dream. DuWop iGels ($20) are iDeal for chilling on your couch post-superlong-day-at-work, while you catch a nap and perchance, a dream. They're super-gummy (to the point you almost want to BITE them), citrus-scented, cucumber-cool (stick them in the fridge for 15 min prior to application), and do yeoman's duty to reduce puffiness and dark circles.

80s Ladies Week: Enchantmint Under the Sea Dance

Tuesday, July 08, 2008

The inspiration: The Enchantment Under the Sea dance in Back to the Future (both I and II.) The crazy high school sparkly streamers, the cool blue and green decor. Can't you just HEAR Marvin Berry (cousin of Chuck, natch) singing Earth Angel in the background as Marty McFly furiously attempts to strum his guitar only to find that his hand is DISAPPEARING?

The product: Flirt! The Look of Love Eyeliner in Enchantmint. This pencil's creamy formula is, in the words of Lorraine McFly, a dream. I love to use it just on the bottom lashes for a fun, shimmery burst of color for summer. It's mildly 80s, but you and I both know that's not necessarily a bad thing. What are you waiting for? You know this little jewel is your eyeliner density. Get your damn hands on it here for $10.

80s Ladies Week: Greener than Shady Pines: Soap & Glory Feet Dreams

Monday, July 07, 2008

Here it is, gals. The first item of 80s ladies week: Soap & Glory Feet Dreams ($10).

The inspiration: The Golden Girls' Blanche Devereaux's vegetation-themed boudoir (pictured above.)

The genius copywriters employed by beauty maven Marcia Kilgore (the brills mind behind Bliss products) hail Feet Dreams as "a greener alternative to air-conditioning." That it is, girls. I like to rub this verdant crisp gel all over my legs and feet, dab a bit on the inside of my elbows and wrists and chill in front of a fan. The mentholation-ness kicks in within seconds to cool you down utterly. No A/C necessary. Though its formula is a gel, it manages to moisturize and impart a fresh green scent.

Available at Target and at target.com.

Perfect for hot climes in the summer... like, Miami. Sing it with me, Miami is nice, so I'll say it twice... Miami is nice, Miami is nice!

Totally Bitchin': July 7-11 is 80s Ladies Week

Thursday, July 03, 2008

Girls, do I have a treat for you (if you like the 80s that is... and if you don't, you probably aren't a frequent visitor here, anyway.) I've had five 80s themed product-specific weeks here at BBJ:
Pour Some Sugar on Me Week: Body Scrubs
Smooth Operator Week: Shaving Paraphernalia
Wash me Amadeus Week: Face Washes
Hairadise Week: Hair Products
Glow-y Days Week (upcoming): Self-Tanners

My friend Daneen recently approached me with a fab idea (that occurred to her after a few cocktails - ha!) for an 80s week with a twist: what if we BOTH chose an 80s TV show, movie, song, clothing trend, and toy and wrote about a corresponding product inspired by each one of those categories? I was, naturally, right on top of that, Rose (that movie's from '91, unfortch.) Get excited for a totally tubular week of 80s nostalgia - as it relates to beauty, of course. Because I "just can't get enough." In the meantime, tell me your favorite 80s TV show, movie, song, clothing trend and toy in the comments.

It's going to be rad.

Happy 4th, dolls!
