Carol's Column: Red Carpet Revisited

By Carol (my mother)

I’ve got to acknowledge that when Kate Winslet cares to glam up, she certainly rises to the occasion, in this case, on Oscar Night. Looking eminently emulatable in an elegant, art deco-ish Yves St Laurent gown, she definitely hit her mark. Kudos to Kate.   Read more...

Oscars 2010 Hairstyle & Makeup: Rachel McAdams

Monday, March 08, 2010

Rachel McAdams looked stunning last night at the 2010 Oscars. This just in, the beauty breakdown to achieve Rachel McAdams' Academy Awards hair and makeup looks.

Makeup

Rachel's sister, makeup artist Kayleen McAdams created Rachel's makeup concept. Kayleen's inspiration: "We chose our colour palette based on the water colour look of Rachel’sdress. There was a wash of cool tones in the dress, blue, green, purple, pink so we wanted the eye, cheek and lips to all have this same watercolour sheerness to it."

How to get Rachel McAdams' makeup look: For Rachel’s eyes, Kayleen used a combination of grey and pink shades. On the lid, she used CHANEL Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Fountain. She kept the grey on the outer corners of the lid and underneath the eye. She used the rose gold shade in the CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Spices up to the brown bone and along the lid. To finish it off, Kayleen used CHANEL Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Slate in the inner corners of the eye, and followed up with two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir.

She kept the lips very simple with CHANEL Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Rose Comete, a beautiful light pink shade, and a bit of CHANEL Glossimer in Futile to accentuate the lips but keep the focus on the eyes.

Hair

Sebastian Stylist Design Team Member Thomas Dunkin styled Rachel's tresses to complement her pastel watercolor-print strapless couture gown. The voluminous texture of Rachel’s bun evoked a spring-time look that is effortlessly chic and breathtakingly beautiful.

How to get Rachel McAdams' Oscars 2010 hairstyle:
  • Start by applying Sebastian Professional Liquid Gloss to slightly damp hair.
  • Blow dry hair straight with a large round bristle brush to give hair a smooth, polished base and voluminous texture from which to start styling.
  • Brush hair back and put in a ponytail just above the occipital bone. Secure with bobby pins.
  • Backcomb the ponytail and start to smooth the hair under using Sebastian Professional Re-
  • Shaper hairspray, securing with bobby pins. Do this until all of the hair is tucked under and secured.
  • Apply Sebastian Professional Craft Clay to the top and sides of the head for a textured effect rather than a perfectly-groomed finish.
  • Finish the look with Sebastian Professional Re-Shaper hairspray and gently massage the whole look to give it a disheveled, modern feel.

What did you think of Rachel's red carpet look?

Best Oscars 2010 Hairstyles and Beauty Trends

The red carpet moment of the year, the 2010 Oscars is like the prom night of Hollywood. From Twilight-pale beauties (yay for embracing copy-paper white complexions and eschewing the ubiquitous orange spray tan) to Veronica Lake waves and lashes for days, five celebrity hairstyle and makeup looks in particular blew our hair back.

Sandra Bullock

Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock wore a sleek, strong side-parted hairstyle that brought out the reflective shine of her brunette locks. The ends of her hair were softly waved for a bit of oomph. Pinky-red lips, a defined brow and dramatic lashes rounded out the look.

Kate Winslet channeled Old Hollywood glamor perfectly with her lightened blonde hairstyle. Peach-pink lipstick and blush complimented her sexy-than-usual hairstyle. Rachel McAdams can always be counted on to bring the beauty. This season, Rachel sparkled in watercolor-inspired pink eyeshadow that was tempered with a touch of slate shadow near the inner corners of the eye. Oscars 2010 Hairstyle & Makeup: Sandra Bullock

Hair
Fekkai's Adir Abergel created Best Actress Winner Sandra Bullock at the 2010 Oscars.

Sandra's sleek hair and strong side-part created beautiful lines to compliment her dress. He modernized the texture of the hair by creating a sleek look, with a slight wave at the end.

How to get the look: Conditioned hair is very important for any sleek style. Abergel used FEKKAI ADVANCED GLOSSING SHAMPOO AND CONDITONER, leaving the conditioner on for 15 minutes. He then rinsed and towel dried the hair. Then he parted the hair in a deep side part. Adir recommends following the arch of your brow to choose where to part your hair. He then took a large FEKKAI ROUND BRUSH and blow-dried the hair completely straight, making sure the roots were flat. Then spray with FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY to 2” sections of hair from roots to the end and use a flat iron to get a bone straight effect. To finish the look, Abergel took a 1 1/4” inch curling iron and lightly curled the ends of the hair for a nice slight wave and tucked the bangs behind the ear. To complete the look he added the FEKKAI SILKY STRAIGHT IRONLESS SMOOTH FINISH SERUM to create a sleek finish.

Product pricing: Fekkai Glossing Shampoo ($23), Fekkai Glossing Conditioner ($23), Fekkai Extra Large Round Brush ($65) Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray ($23), Fekkai Silky Straight Ironless Smooth Finish Serum ($23)

Makeup
Makeup artist Angela Levin for CHANEL BEAUTE created Sandra Bullock's 2010 Oscar makeup look.

"Tonight was Sandra's big night and she was in a happy, ethereal mood. I wanted her to look like the true movie star she is, so we went with modernclassy Hollywood - dewy skin, soft eyes, and a bold classic red lip."

How to get the look: Angela prepped Sandra's skin with CHANEL Sublimage Fluid. She then used afoundation brush to apply CHANEL Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeupin Shell all over the face.

Angela created a structured brow with the softbrown powder in the limited edition Les Regards de CHANEL Palette. She lined Sandra's eyes with the darker brown shade in the same palette. Finally, she applied three coats of CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir for sexy, glamorous lashes.

To create the real focus of Sandra's look--a gorgeous, bold red lip--Angela applied CHANEL Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Paris. She finished the look by gently dabbing a bit of the same lipcolour on the apples of Sandra's cheeks --Angela's signature makeup trick.

While I loved Sandra's sleek Malibu Barbie look and beautiful red lip, I was a bit put off by her super-long part. What say you?

Oscars 2010 Beauty: Kristen Stewart

Frederic Fekkai's Renato Campora styled presenter, Kristen Stewart.

The inspiration was a modern, edgy look with a young vibe.

Read about my interview about Kristen Stewart's makeup in New Moon with Robin Mathews.

He dried the hair straight using a FEKKAI LARGE ROUND BRUSH. He then used a 1 inch curling iron to create waves and texture.

He added the FEKKAI AU NATURAL DRY SHAMPOO for extra volume and movement. He tied a number of loose braids on the sides of the head beginning half way down the strands, leaving them untied at the ends to create extra dimension to the look.

He then pulled all the hair back into a low chignon and secured with large bobby pins. He finished with FEKKAI GLOSSING SHEER MIST for shine and FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY for all night hold.

Cameron Diaz's 2010 Oscars Makeup Look

Cameron Diaz looked absolutely gorgeous at the 2010 Oscars. Right? That's a look that deserves a slow clap. Makeup Artist Robin Fredriksz created the look.

Beauty Inspiration:“We took the Veronica Lake regal, smooth, classic Hollywood look and gave it a modern but glamorous twist. We kept the warmth and added a little edge.”

Get the Look: Robin started off by applying CHANEL Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Sand in the crease of the lids, and lining the entire eye with CHANEL Intense Eye Pencil in Noir. To make Cameron's striking blue eyes pop even more, Robin applied several coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir.
As Cameron has loved a red lip lately, Robin lined her lips with CHANEL Lip Definer in Rouge, and applied the perfect true red lip shade - CHANEL Rouge Coco in Gabrielle. She used the same shade of lip colour as a blush, dabbing a bit on the apples of the cheeks.
Her nails were painted with CHANEL Nail Colour in Lotus Rouge, a flattering shade perfect for the red carpet.

Queen Latifah's 2010 Oscars Makeup Look

Queen Latifah’s Oscar beauty look, by makeup artist D’Andre Michael. This was such a win (though Queen Latifah always hits it right on the mark). The deets, straight from D'Andre:

For Queen Latifah’s Oscar’s look I decided to go with a plum smoky eye, soft mauve lip and bronzed skin.

Queen Latifah’s wardrobe was a beautiful, custom-designed lavender gown.
I used a foundation brush to apply
COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Liquid Makeup in Warm Caramel and set it with COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Pressed Powder in Brown Bronze 1.

For Queen Latifah’s eyes, I started by applying COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Pressed Powder in Brown Bronze 1 to the brow bone. I do this to achieve a more natural look to the brow bone. Secondly, I used COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Purple Plume on the entire lid from the lash line to the inner crease. I then used COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Onyx Smoke in the inner crease to blend up on the brow bone. For depth and intensity, I used COVERGIRL Outlast Smoothwear All Day Eyeliner in Onyx on the inner bottom eyelid. To give lashes the oomph that most women crave, I applied COVERGIRL LashBlast Length Waterproof Mascara in Very Black.

For Queen Latifah’s lips, I wanted to compliment the plum eye by doing a beautiful mauve lip to balance out the various purple hues of the entire look. To start I used a base coat of MAC Lipstick in Midimauve and then lined her lips with Kevyn Aucoin Flesh Tone Lip Pencil in Deep. I recommend rubbing your lips together after lining lips to blend the line. I added luster and shine to Queen’s lips by applying a dab of COVERGIRL ShineBlast Lip Gloss in Aglow.
To complete Queen’s look I used CARGO Blush in Siena on the apples of her cheekbones for a hint of color and glow. To complete the overall look I used
COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer in Brown Bronze for a soft and subtle glow on her upper cheekbones, forehead, nose, neck and collar bone.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's 2010 Oscars Makeup Look

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Oscar 2010 beauty look was created by COVERGIRL celebrity makeup artist, Molly R. Stern. I thought Maggie looked delightful. What say you?

The deets, straight from Molly:

Maggie is the muse of spring. Her Dries Van Noten gown is a swirl of bright colors that fades into white. For her makeup I wanted to bring out the color of her eyes with some depth while keeping with the brightness of her overall style. We started off the look by refreshing the skin with Jurlique Rose Water spray. Then I prepped the skin with Shu Uemura red:juvenus vitalizing concentrate and lightly moisturized with La Mer moisturizing lotion.
For a flawless complexion I primed Maggie's skin with COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer (out in July!!).

Then I lightly applied some Chantecaille future skin foundation in the color 'cream' only where she needed it. Then lastly I dusted La Mer powder foundation in 'Ivory' to set the skin for the big night.

For her amber peachy cheeks I used COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Rich Cinnamon. And dusted some NARS 'dolce vita' blush on the apples.

For Maggie's eyes of layered copper smoke I based her eye with COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire. Next I deepened her lid with NARS soft touch shadow pencil 'skorpios'. Then I blended into the crease Shu Uemura pressed eye shadow 'p brown 810' and lastly I lightly dusted Shu Uemura pressed eyeshadow in 'n me brown 860' all over the lid for a golden finish. For the undereye, I resmudged the COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast under her lash line to bring out the blue of Maggie's eyes. Finally I defined her lashes by combining brown and black mascara. I painted the lashes with both colors using COVERGIRL LashBlast Length for perfectly flirty long lashes.

On Maggie's lips I applied NARS 'schiap' lip color –it was the perfect shade to finish off the look. Its bright hue matches Maggie's vibrant sense of style and confidence. The finished product was perfection. She looked like herself. Authentic, cool and beautiful. Being a part of Oscar day with a nominee is such an honor. It's like an actress' wedding day with Hollywood. I love being here. I feel so blessed.

Demi Moore's 2010 Oscars Makeup Look

Sunday, March 07, 2010

Demi Moore shone at the 2010 Oscars, from her dusty rose Versace gown to her easy updo to her softly dramatic makeup. Celebrity makeup artist Jo Strettell worked on Demi's makeup concept.

For Demi’s complexion, Jo mixed two Giorgio Armani foundations—Luminous Silk Foundation and Lasting Silk UV SPF 34 Compact Foundation—and swept YSL Touche Éclat under the eyes and around the nose. Lancôme’s Blush Subtil in Rose Fresque, just on the apples of the cheeks, brightened her complexion. Jo created the soft, smoky eye with Lancôme Color Design Eye in Ciel du Soir on the lid and Color Design Eye in Honeymoon as a highlight from right above the lid to the brow bone and on the inner corner of the eyes. Lancôme’s Le Crayon Khôl in Gris Noir lined the eyes and Jo softened the look by smudging the line. The lashes were curled with a Shu Uemura lash curler, followed by several coats of Lancôme Hypnôse Drama in Excessive Black on the top lashes and Ôscillation Mascara in Black to the lower lashes. For Demi’s lips, the combination of Lancôme’s L'Absolu Rouge in Rich Cashmere and Juicy Tubes in Spring Fling created a pretty, nude lip that had just enough pop.

Interview With Academy Awards Makeup Department Head Bruce Grayson

This week, I got to catch up with Academy Awards Makeup Department Head and Olay Celebrity Makeup Artist Bruce Grayson. He'll be very busy this evening managing the green room's makeup touch-ups before and during the 2010 Oscars. Learn everything from how he creates a five-minute face to what products he goes drugstore for, below.

Beauty Blogging Junkie: Are you working on any celebrities yourself?
Bruce Grayson: My team and I will be touching up most of the presenters and nominees. The event is four hours long, and most actresses get ready three hours before they get in the car. So they're never completely fresh throughout the length of show. That's why people come backstage, there's a lot of freshing up going on.

BBJ: What are the top makeup trends for the 2010 Oscars?
BG: The sultry smoky eye, which best part of face forward. This year, we'll see a more translucent smoky eye, so it doesn’t create SO much shadow. It can be easily achieved with translucent greys, soft plums. More sheer. I'm loving the new COVERGIRL smoky shadow blast colors. It comes with two applicators. Just do two swipes, blending with fingers or a qtip and you’re done.

Pinky coral colors for lips is the second trend. Really vivid corals , either matte or glossy. I loved January Jones at the 2010 Golden Globes. That look was all about skin prep. Also key is getting your skin in shape the weeks before. To do this, I love the Olay ProX Professional treatment like their intensive firming mask and serum. Together, they give a potent dose of anti-aging ingreditents.

BBJ: What are some of your favorite trends?

BG: Fresh skin, that's not too dewy but dewy enough. Sheer washes of blush, Giorgio Armani Sheer Color Fluids are a great way to get this look. I tend toward cream blushes look more like skin. Like you’ve been out in the cold. It’s texture more than a color. Underneath eyes, I recommend reducing puffiness the Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller, put concealer on and use Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer. I try to talk women out of wearing to much makeup.

BBJ: Let's talk about getting glam on a budget: When should you save and when should you splurge?
BG: Lipstick is a telltale item, so it's a good place to splurge. Pull out the YSL for that. Mascara is another splurge: Lancome Definicils is the best, it makes each last look independent of each other. For volume: Diorshow is best for a clumpy volumized look. Giorgio Armani fluid foundations is the third necessary splurge. It stays put with a sheer wash of color and comes in so many shades.

You can certainly save on skin care. The Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller is a bargain and depuffs eyes like a dream. The COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast is mistake proof. For $7, why wouldn't you carry it around in your purse?

BBJ: What are your tips for 5-minute makeup application?

  • BG: Olay Anti-Aging Eye Roller
  • Concealer
  • Mascara
  • Caribe Vanilla Lip Balm: This is a gem I found in a health food store. It conditions and boasts a healthy sheen. It's all natural, created with pure shea butter.

BBJ: What are the top five “dos and don’ts” for getting red carpet-ready?
  • BG: Dos: Focus on one element of the face. Those are the looks you you think about days after the event. It needs to be simple. Not too matchy matchy. Your eye can’t focus on the total package.
  • Don'ts: Too many layers of reapplication throughout the day negates the sheer that it says on the package. Use blotting papers instead.
  • The too black smoky eye: You can’t even see pupils. This tends to happen frequently at the Grammys. Not too heavy on the eyes. Seeing a shift toward translucent sultry smoky eyes. Where you can see through the color on the lid. Frame eye with more brightness.
  • People tend to combine ALL colors of a palette at once, which can look bad. Dior five-color shadow palettes are good, if you're set on doing five colors. I usually use about three colors for depth. But there's nothing wrong with using just one color. It's all about simplicity. Start with eye color, do lashes, then stop and see if you need more. If you need more, do a pin-thin line across lashes. Cake eyeliner black eyeliner by Laura Mercier is a favorite. All liner does is pull the lashline together: It pulls it close to the lashes.

Thanks, Bruce! Can't wait to see tonight's beauty looks on the red carpet.
