Elizabeth Dehn is one of my skin care senseis and writes one of my favorite beauty blogs, beautybets.com. I hit up the beauty guru to share her Five Rules below. Check 'em out, in her words.
1. Just say no.
Newsflash: No one cares about you or your life as much as you. So why are you living it for other people? They will still love you if you’re too tired to go out, too busy to sit on a board, too stressed to help with a fundraiser. If they don’t, move on.
2. Wear sunscreen, every single day, no less than SPF 30.
Had I heeded this advice while baking on the black tar roof of my college dorm, I wouldn’t be battling sunspots and crow’s feet now. This is why bronzer was invented.
3. If you’re scared to try something, you probably should.
Turns out that fear only gets in the way of the life you want and the person you want to be. So volunteer to speak at an event, train for a triathlon, call your long-lost friend, start a blog. You have nothing to lose but the opportunity for growth and greater joy.
4. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you.
Even if you’re related, or you’ve been friends for 10 years, or your husbands golf together—the more time and energy to give to people who make you feel drained, empty or like shit, the less time and energy you have for people who make you feel like you are brilliant, funny and capable of anything.
Until recently, I lived in a constant state of mild anxiety: What am I doing with my life? Am I on the right path? Does my hair look right? Will those throw pillows work with that couch? As soon as I figured out that everything good in my life—family, friends, career—was a gift from the universe, not from me trying to control the universe, I stopped obsessing about the unknown and began allowing all of the things that make me happy and give me energy to flow in.
Thanks, Elizabeth! Stay tuned for more Five Rules.
