Q&A With "Tough Love"'s Steve Ward
Yes, I know this will surprise exactly no one, but Steve Ward is TOUGH, ladies. That's no veneer he's putting on for television show Tough Love Miami. The man is simultaneously dapper and harsh as hell. Even more jarring for me, he delivers this caustic-though-helpful counsel with the exact same accent as my DAD'S (Steve is a fellow Philadelphian), which makes it an even tougher pill to swallow. A friend of mine who shall remain nameless pronounced him "worthy of having his portrait on a box of Summer's Eve" upon making his acquaintance. BUT I can't agree. Earlier in the year at an event at which he presented on behalf of Pantene he told me he liked my hair. And you know that to me, there is no higher compliment.
So while he drops the truth like little effed-up bombs sometimes that inspire my WTF face, I still adore him the way Pepe Le Pew did that cat who was unwittingly painted with a white stripe. So when I had the chance to attend a little meet-and-greet sesh with him at VH1 headquarters a few weeks ago to celebrate the season three premiere of the show, OBV I went. I sat down with him to ask all my burning dating questions. Here, Steve shared two vital things you NEED to be doing if you ever plan to make anything Facebook Official in this town. They're not too intuitive, dolls. Read on for the full interview.
Purge Your Pores Post-Halloween
Saturday, October 29, 2011
Happy Halloween, my interwebs friends!
What are we dressing as? Yours truly was going to go as a dead cheerleader (I have a skirt from years ago that I revive every once in a while when I don't feel like coming up with a new costume) but this flash blizzard has me changing my tune, sadly. But for all of you who are going out, I want to share a little post-All Hallow's Eve skin care tip. Slathering a ton of pore-clogging face paint onto your mug is the textbook definition of festivity, but it wreaks crazy damage to your visage if you don't remove it properly and give your pores a little purging once the makeup is off. Whether your painting your entire face like the nefarious Cobra Kai did in Karate Kid or just putting on a little more makeup than usual, I recommend a little sesh with Repechage Hydra Medic Sea Mud Mask ($29). Giveaway: Win A Set Of Stages Of Beauty Skin Care
Though most skin care ranges are categorized according to concern, Stages of Beauty, a new line that launched this January, takes a different approach. Creator Jasmina Aganovic, an MIT-trained Chemical & Biological Engineer (and Fresh and Living Proof alum) saw that few brands actually catered to all of our skin’s anti-aging needs throughout life. You can count on biological changes to occur, but most skincare brands fail to consider age in their formulations. And our skin may not be getting the vital nutrients it needs as we progress through life. Enter Stages of Beauty, which has figured out exactly what our skin needs in our 20s (Radiance), 30s (Harmony), 40s (Elegance), 50s (Grace) and beyond. In short? It DELIVERS, like Cliff Clavin of Cheers fame. For the review and how to enter, read on...
The Brunette Hair Color Tip You Need To Know
Gals, this hair hue tip I just scored from colorist Marko Tomassetti at Sally Hershberger for brunettes is so genius I had to drop everything and share. Says Marko, "Brew a really strong pot of coffee (avoid instant), let it cool and add the coffee to a spray bottle. Once a week after shampooing, spray the coffee throughout your hair, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, rinse and condition. The coffee helps to boosts your color and add richness!" He also advises that those with olive skin add a bit of warmth to their shade so that it doesn't look one dimensional. In the sage words of Doc Brown to Marty McFly in Back To The Future II, "You're not thinking FOURTH DIMENSIONALLY." If your skin skews more yellow, he says to stick with medium brown.
Now go brew that pot of coffee and spritz with abandon pre-Halloween bash!

Tom Ford Cosmetics Collection First Look: Cheek Color in Love Lust
GOD, I was SO TIRED tonight. After a pretty hectic day of meetings and running all over Manhattan in this (Edina) monsoon, then imparting beauty tips to the women's networking circle at PricewaterhouseCoopers, incidentally, in the building in which I started this blog and THEN heading to Koi for some crispy rice AND THEN catching the Project Runway finale at The Style Coalition lounge.
But THEN (and this is the most important then) I came home and discovered that I'd gotten a little bag of delight with my favorite name on it, Tom Ford. AND THEN I SAW THIS NOTE:
I mean, though I'm the only blogger who has it in her possession, I'm not going to lie, it all felt very The Only Girl In The World, to quote Rihanna. I HAD to share photos with you guys. Though swatches aren't usually my thing, I needed to discuss with you via PHOTO ESSAY just how phenomenal this Tom Ford Cheek Color in Love Lust is. When you get a Tom Ford exclusive ANYTHING, well, you get moving on it. Especially when the formulation is, as this one is, to die. That name is no hyperbole. The consistency is creamy, though it's a powder formula, it boasts an incredible hydrating effect upon application. Cooling, almost. The consistency is pure luxury. Tip: If you're experiencing cheek breakouts, a cream blush will actually take off all your foundation/concealer handiwork, so opt for a hydrating blush like Tom Ford's until the redness fades. Some pics of the new blush:

The Thursday Three: Fragrance Edition
Thursday, October 27, 2011
Ohai, guys! Welcome to a new column called The Thursday Three. It's pretty self-explanatory, each Thursday I'll cover three new items in a different category--eye creams, lipsticks, shampoo, etc. We're going to start with fragrance, with which I'm on a tear, BT dubs, since reading Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez' Perfumes The Guide. That book is so hilarious I shouted lines of it to my father in the front seat of the car on the way to dinner on Rosh Hashana, though he's utterly uninterested in fragrance and HE thought it was hyster. So without further ado, my favorite new scent launches.
1. Clinique Aromatics Elixir 40th Anniversary Perfumer's Reserve ($75)
Fragrance enthusiasts know that Aromatics Elixir is older than the hills (The Hills, even) so while it seems like an odd choice for a launch, please know that the SPESH limited-edition 40th anniversary iteration IS brand spanking new. I remember it coming in my Gift With Purchase packs I scored with my new Almost Lipstick in Black Honey or Lipstick in Tenderheart (the perfect pinked-off nude). It boasts crisp bergamot and orange blossom in addition to its cult formulation for a brighter citrus twist. The absolutely gorge bottle is made of amber-tinted glass to resemble the golden robe of a finely aged cognac. There's also a solid perfume necklace and a perfume spray.
2. Lolita Lempicka Si Lolita ($72)
In 2003, I was OBSESSED with the original Lolita Lempicka and its whimsical bottle but mostly for its beautiful olfactory journey that made me feel like a sprite in flight instead of a receptionist with a temporary gig at a law firm, which, for the record, I was in 2003. BUT the men of Paul, Weiss LLP were powerless against the allure of the Lempicka so I wanted to test out the franchise's latest edition, which includes the spicy freshness of sweet pea. Originally put off by its presumptuous name (it's kind of like buying a hotel room before asking your date to the prom), after one whiff I changed my tune. Housed in an adorable stylized floral bottle with a scarf that recalls Carmen Miranda around its neck, this scent is SASSY.
Pink peppercorn invigorates while an airiness imparts a singularly gossamer vibe while managing to somehow evoke a masculine quality. Love.
3. Vera Wang Lovestruck ($48)
This scent follows the latest trend that the bottle should be an opus in and of itself--check that action OUT. The burgundy pink flowers are beautiful. The fruity floral is houses is a romantic composition with a slightly mature demeanor. As for which fictional character would it suit? It's a fragrance I see Prime's Rafi wearing--sultry sheer musk decorated with a tuberose essence. It's Flowerbomb-esque with an added freshness. Get involved.
What item would you like to see covered next week on Three for Thursday?

State Of The Skin Care Union: Gems From Pratima & 100% Pure
I've been THROUGH IT this year, from a skin care perspective. You could say I've been back to the middle and around again. I needed something that would be there till the end. Never having more than the odd zit all my lifestyle, suddenly, bafflingly in my THIRTIES I'm confronted with the unsexy affliction of ACTIVE ACNE. Like, all over, seven active pimples simultaneously. One would clear up and I'd just get two more. My guess is that it was caused by a combo of two many products (I'd been skin care promiscuous for a while--my skin became unbalanced) and hormones. After a three-month long stint on Doxycycline and some prescription topicals courtesy of Dr. David Colbert, I'm back on track. Read on for my two new favorite products.

What's On Jonathan Adler's Vanity?
Tuesday, October 25, 2011

| Jonathan Adler Carnaby Flame Mug ($18) |
There are just no WORDS to describe my colossal adoration of Jonathan Adler. I feel he is truly my gay male alter-ego. I fell in love with him (I'd previously and still can't get enough of his hilarious husband Simon Doonan--find out what's on his vanity here) when I read this early 2005 New York Times piece on him and Simon. In 2005, no one was abbreviating things except for Jonathan Adler and myself (I've been doing it since I was little). My favorite quote from the article is when the writer asks just what exactly Jonathan means by "the South Florida eccentricity thing," to which Jonathan replied, "It's you're older, you have the money, and you just say to yourself, 'Why not the shell-covered escritoire?'" And the only person who's more into him is Carol (née Carol ADLER, BTW). We are President and Vice President of his fan club. So what's on Jonathan's vanity? Find out...
Ashley Greene's Makeup Look At The "Breaking Dawn" Premiere In Paris
Monday, October 24, 2011
Ashley Greene KILLED IT with a nod to classic beauty at Saturday’s premiere of Breaking Dawn in Paris. Makeup artist Vanessa Scali created the look using Mark Cosmetics. Here, the beauty breakdown, in Vanessa's words:
Bottega Veneta Parfum Behind-the-scenes Video
Here is Bottega Veneta's third and final short film for the launch of the brand's first women's fragrance.
This film features the behind-the-scenes footage of Bruce Weber's campaign photoshoot with Nine d'Urso, the face of Bottega Veneta Parfum and commentary by creative director Tomas Maier. Love the background music of DeBussy's "Clair de Lune," which I certainly knew of before The Twilight Saga, but the franchise just brings new meaning to it. OKAY? Check it out and let me know what you think.

Here's the thing about Christy Turlington Burns. When you're in her presence, you feel as if the world is the movie Twins--and we're all Danny Devito and she's Arnold Schwartzeneger. What I'm saying is, it's always her night (bro). Taking the above photo with her required a LOT of preparation on the part of Andrea, Rachel, Kristin and myself--as if it MATTERED.

Boy-band Big: Burberry Beauty At Saks
![]() |
| Justin and I at the Burberry Beauty counter at Saks |
Dolls, the title is a phrase of my gal Felicia's, of which I've always been a fan. Sometimes "boy-band big" is the only way to get the POINT across. And that's exactly what this makeup range IS. So last week, I skipped on over to Saks Fifth Avenue for a tour of the new Burberry Beauty counter and a makeover with the very talented makeup guru Justin Hissey. Have you gotten involved with this epic line of cosmetics? It launched last year and hit Saks just last month. Most of the products boast a silicon infusion for a luxe, moisturizing texture; each iteration more sublime than the next. Justin pointed out to me that it serves to protect from the elements, as does the brand's iconic raincoats. The Burberry Beauty eye shadows are especially pigmented, but beautifully blendable, thanks to their silky silicon formula. Read on...

Get The Look: Amanda Seyfried's Hairstyle At The "In Time" Premiere
It's hard not to get distracted by Justin Timberlake's habenero pepper levels of spiciness in that suit, but we've got to focus on the beauty news at hand, and that is Amanda Seyfried epically shiny blowout at the "In Time" premiere. Parenthetically, JT AND a sci-fi movie? It's like a perfect storm of everything I LIKE. Anywho, Jenny Cho, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist created the hairstyle for Amanda Seyfried. Here, a step-by-step on how to recreate it at home (though, sadly, sans arm candy JT for your night out).

Lindsay Lohan's Fakakta Makeup
Wednesday, October 19, 2011
My gal Tara E posted this pic of Lindsay Lohan on Facebook and I nearly snarfed my Diet Cherry Coke. What the hell is this? I mean, we all WANT sculpted cheekbones, but this looks like a cross between Navajo warpaint and a Dynasty cheek. Unintentionally theatrical, my favorite hilarious makeup effect.
What's HAPPENING here? Furthermore, do you think Lindsay Lohan's probation should have been revoked? Discuss.

Dealing With Hair Extension Withdrawal Takes Time, Love And Tenderness
When you rid yourself of extensions, you go through the five stages of grief. Then one day you realize: They did you the diservice of not growing out of your head. My pal, the inimitable Ted Gibson suggests that "if you have Great Lengths, if you want to take them out and start over, get clip-ins to get over the crack addiction that is the weave." He says, "When a woman is used to that fullness, it can be difficult to go without. If you are getting your hair trimmed, change the color for a new perspective. You can feel excited about something."
Here's how some of my fellow beauty friends coped when they endured the loss of extensions.

Eau de HOTNESS: Paul Walker For Davidoff Cool Water Interview
![]() |
| Seriously? Who other than Shamu looks that good wet? |
Man, it's not often a New Yorker will admit to being criminally jeal she's not living in Los Angeles.
But when I scored an invite to an event on the west coast to interview the sexy, fast, furious, etc. Paul Walker, the new face of everyone's boyfriend in high school's fragrance (Cool Water), I just about sobbed into my Pumpkin Spice Latte.
Because I love my gal Jamie Stone in sunny California, I asked if she'd mind terribly attending the event to cover it for BBJ. Naturally, she deigned to fit it into her sched, and here we have her guest post in which she covers Paul's must-have grooming item. Behold:
Kate Hudson Dyes Her Hair Brown
This better be a wig for a role. Remember Alex & Emma, Kate Hudson? Well, neither does anyone else but Luke Wilson and me. But a brunette hairstyle is just... not your best look.
