Review: Lady Speed Stick Fresh Infusions Antiperspirant & Deodorant

Recently, my gals Tamar and Andrea and I were out at dinner (Sushi With My Girls, alas) and Andrea proceeded to blow my mind with a fragrance revelation she shared. See, it's Andrea's belief that certain scents (like vanilla and coconut) are PRIVATE and thus, should not be applied in vast amounts of perfume or even hand cream lest you offend your olfactory public. They should be kept close to your person. Read on...

Fictionary: Red Light Special Skin Care

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty-related words that don't exist, but should.

Dolls, it is a truth universally acknowledged that Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford (who plays Lily van der Woodsen on the hit show) has creamy, poreless skin that belies her age of 42.  So I wasn't surprised when I was invited to a Zeno breakfast launch for the brand's new wrinkle zapper called Zeno Line Rewind ($40) and that Kelly Rutherford spoke on the device's behalf.  I attended to try out the brand's new anti-aging device system boasting heat, vibration and red light technology.  Upon testing it out nightly for the past couple weeks, I hereby hail it the Red Light Special, to quote the select musical stylings of TLC.  For the full review, read on...

Elizabeth Taylor Was Late To Her Own Funeral

Saturday, March 26, 2011

You know, I've always APPRECIATED Elizabeth Taylor. She was, truly, the last movie star. She was satisfyingly unaccessible, making her refreshingly Old Hollywood, instead of the new regime, in which they're just like Us. But truth be told--she wasn't my FAVORITE. I love retro glamour more than anything--but my heart has always belonged to Grace Kelly (obv--she was the only one who got to be A PRINCESS on top of everything else. Not bad for a Philadelphia girl), Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. That was my triumvirate of fabulosity.

Until I read that Elizabeth Taylor intentionally insisted that her memorial service start 15 minutes late--just so that she could be late to her own funeral. She's now inducted into the trio of faves, which is, of course, now a quartet.

It's just so fucking genius.

To Liz.

Video Review: Bliss Steep Clean

Friday, March 25, 2011

I'm having a full-on love affair with Bliss Steep Clean Pore Purifying Mask ($54). Use once a week, or anytime your pores start to feel bumptastic and... not-so-fresh. Yes, the price is a bit steep, but as a once a week gunk eradicator, I promise this stuff's worth the investment. Its side-by-side yellow and blue components remind me of old-school Mentadent toothpaste, a very subtle tribute to the '90s. Try it and find brighter, more even skin in its wake. Check out the video below.

Have you tried Bliss Steep Clean? P.S. Bliss is now on QVC! Get involved.

My Impromptu Cut With Dove's Mark Townsend

Me with Mark Townsend post-cut
Is there anything more awk than cheating on your stylist (Matthew Fugate) IN his salon (Sally Hershberger Downtown) WHILE he's there? My promiscuous hair and I did exactly that when I'd arrived for my Dove blow-out appointment with famed stylist Mark Townsend, who, by the BY, has tended to the locks of one Miss Jennifer Lawrence, whom it's just been announced will play The Hunger Games' KATNISS EVERDEEN. KATNISS AND I HAVE HAD OUR HAIR CUT BY THE SAME PERSON. Sorry, I realize there's no need not to use my inside voice. Anyway.

See, when I need a haircut, I get like the dude who can't stop talking about Frank's planet in the too-short-lived '90s MTV animation series, Liquid Television. Except my Rain Man-levels of discussion topic is my hair and how it needs to be cut, as opposed to the dude traveling to Nerp (evidently), who is having major Frank Separation Anxiety. Watch the short, called "This Is Not Frank's Planet," below. Read more...

Elizabeth Taylor Dies At 79

Elizabeth Taylor has passed away, ABC News has confirmed.

The actress and legendary husband collector died from congestive heart failure. She was 79. The epic Cleopatra star was hospitalized last month for heart failure, and also underwent heart surgery in 2009.

To me, she is THE quintessential brunette. The violet eyes, the jet-black mane. She was striking and harbored an elegance many have tried to recreate--some successfully (Alexis Colby Carrington) and some un (Michael Jackson).  I'll miss her sauciness, present in her annual White Diamond fragrance commercial, when she exclaims, "These have always brought me luck" before flinging a pair of dangly earrings down the tabletop.

RIP, Liz.

Vernal Equinox Ready Skin

Core Fusion's fantastic, but one unforseen issue is that I notice how copy-paper white I am on a regular basis in the mirrors at Exhale Spa while I'm pretzeling, squatting, pulsing! I usually take a break from my aggressive twice-weekly self-tanning treatments in the winter, but as the weather gets warmer and I expose more skin, I just feel better if said skin is a bit more golden. I've tested out tons and tons of scrub/lotion/tanner combos, but my latest is pretty phenom. It's simple. Ready?

Off-topic: Remember The Old HBO Intro?

Monday, March 21, 2011

Remember the '80s intro to HBO movies? Refresh your memory below.

I find it so comforting. Remember how EXCITING it was to catch a movie when it was starting? Before on-screen guides, you plum had to GUESS what you were watching. And it was likely one of two things on HBO--Just One of the Guys or Loverboy. I have a theory that every single person on earth who grew up in the '80s has seen both of those flicks.

Anyway, for me, that old intro summons memories of watching PG-13 and R-rated movies with my best friend at the time, Rachel Schwartz, where she and I watched them on her cable TV in her bedroom. I most certainly did NOT have a TV in my room (Carol was anti, and sort of still is), let alone one with cable. I was so not allowed to watch movies like Dirty Dancing, Basic Instinct or, well, Loverboy. I also remember catching some crazily spicy flick called Blown Away with Corey Haim (RIP) and Charles In Charge's Nicole Eggert which threw us off because of its wholesome casting. Anywho. One friend reminisced about how it reminded her of Saturday nights with her grandma. My gal Kristen was reminded of watching Fraggle Rock with her dad on weekends.

What does the HBO intro remind you of? Tell!

Mattification Of The Nation: Smooth Half-up Half-down Hairstyle

Sunday, March 20, 2011

In this installment of uber-stylist Matt Fugate's Mattification of the Nation column, he schools us on how to achieve a perfectly smooth half-up half-down hairstyle. It's actually pretty simple. Check it, in Matt's words:

Step 1. Start by blowing hair smooth with a large round brush.
Step 2. Then tease up crown for height and smooth top of hair over and pin in crown.
Step 3. Then smooth each side up and back to meet with the top and pin, resulting in a glamorously smooth uplifting style.

What are your sleek hairstyle tips?

Random Beauty Product from Another Country I'm Irrationally Obsessed With: Gosh Nail Lacquer In Miss Minty

Friday, March 18, 2011

The Beauty Product from Another Country I'm Irrationally Obsessed With column features international beauty gems that cross my path about which I feel you, the reader, are on a need-to-know.

My gal Eileen intro'd me to Gosh Nail Lacquer in Miss Minty. Well, she didn't so much intro me as inform me of her heavily-pigmented, glossy mint green nail polish when I accosted her at a recent Dermalogica event shrieking that I had to know what it was. It had me at HELLO. The photo of the bottle barely does it justice. It's such a flipping awesome green. It's a British brand, but Miss Eileen told me you can find it at Duane Reade Look Boutiques and online. At $9.50, you'll want to invest in a cornucopia of Gosh colors.

Try it and say oh, my...

Estee Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer New Shades + Limited Edition Collection For Nordstrom Spring 2011

PERFECT for St. Pattty's Day: Wicked Game - Creme Pure Color Nail Lacquer Limited Collection
Nordstrom exclusive
I shot a video for a freelance client the other day and realized I should probably swap my denim-decorated digits for some subdued nail tone. Because the video was about makeup tips for older women afflicted with Rosacea, I opted for Essie Limo-scene, feeling very retro (2003), when sheer pinks were all the rage. Well, I've never felt older. For the half a week I sported such subtle, boring nails, I felt like I'd walked out of the house missing my favorite accessory--fun nail polish. Festive varnish has become the norm, no longer a special occasion item. Rocking boring nails was like skipping my jewelry, fun shoes and clutch on a night out. It reminded me of that pivotal scene in The Banger Sisters when Susan Sarandon (La la la la VINIA) says to Goldie Hawn, "I want to go OUT! But everything I own is BEIGE."

Much like how you always need a tissue when you have none on you, I ALWAYS seem to need a blow-out or a cut on Mondays. Also, Mondays work best for appointments due to my fakakta schedule of working in-office Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

So I was amped to hear that my local (and fave) salon, Ted Gibson, will now be offering services on Mondays, beginning on March 28. Make an appointment with a junior stylist or colorist starting at just $75. You can even walk in sans appointment exclusively on Mondays for the first time in salon history. Ted Gibson will be one of the few Manhattan celebrity salons offering hair services on Mondays, so you'll never again be stranded with glamateur hair for your Monday evening gala again.

Fictionary: Lululemonaid

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty- and fashion-related words that don't exist, but should.

To celebrate the fact that I've found a workout I enjoy, I decided to invest in a bit of workoutwear. I love Lululemon's jackets and Wonder Under Pants, though they are a bit spendy. But $70+ for a top that I'm going to schvitz in? NO. That is where I draw the line. For months, I lamented. I rocked American Apparel V-necks, which are great, but then I'd have to pair them with a sports bra. And I was just adding to my pile of laundry.

I refused to spend that much cash for a supportive workout top at Lululemon. So I decided to take life's Lululemons and make Lululemonaid by hitting up my local Old Navy and scoring their Shelf-bra Active Tank in Purple Mania. At $19.50, the gals in my Core Fusion classes will still be impressed, and I love its long length and flattering cut.

What are you working out in, lovies?

Ravishing Ruffles: Express Swimwear

Friday, March 11, 2011

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Express for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
Let's start the countdown to the vernal equinox officially, shall we, ladies?

The Swim Collection 2011 of  women's swimwear is pretty freaking fabulous, my little mermaids. Getting ready for summer bathing suit season is always stressful, but allow Express to help you help yourself make it LESS so.

You'll want to get decked in the brand's monokinis, string bikinis, strapless and halter suits. I'm obviously privy to the brand's flirty ruffles, but there are also sexy self-tie sides, glam beaded embellishments and polished metal hardware. There are a bevy of prints, solid colors and textures to choose from--stripes, animal prints and neons abound. The bathing suit separates range from $24-$49, so you won't blow your bank account on your beach look this summer.

My fave part? There's removable padding in the tops. So you can choose just how much cleave to display, while the bottoms always boast at least moderate tush coverage--though be advised, they fit a bit smaller to size.

Check them out yourself at express.com and don't forget to sign up Express e-mail for a chance to win one of ten $200 Express gift cards!

Secret Natural Mineral Deodorant: Odor Dies Of Natural Causes!

Odor has died of natural causes! The dude above, BTW, is the detective featured in my favorite Golden Girls episode (the murder mystery episode, obv), The Case of the Libertine Belle. Abbie Cornish looked stunning at the Limitless Premier in New York City on Tuesday night. I'm living for that updo. Fantasy Aspirational Hair At Alexander McQueen's Fall 2011 Runway Show

The hairstyle at Alexander McQueen's Fall 2011 show strikes me as quite futuristic. The look at Alexander McQueen was made up of silver and black clips all over the head to looks like a helmet. Said Guido, Redken Creative Consultant, "Overall this season we created very wearable looks, but this is not one of them. Often we talk about Fashion Week hairstyles as being more fantasy and aspirational, and the look we created today at Alexander McQueen is just that. When developing this look, I took inspiration from old paintings of women going into battle and different helmets from the middle ages, representing a very strong, confident woman ."

Core Fusion Month-long Project: Week 4

Guys, we've approached the end of my Core Fusion month-long project! With Catherine Hesse's nutritional guidance and many, many classes, I've definitely toned up. People at work even told me I looked as if I lost weight, which is semi-shocking because while my overall measurements aren't so dramatic (1/4 inch off my neck, a couple inches off my waist and hips). However, I do feel more toned and that my body has begun to change and get longer and leaner. I feel it's a good start, and I'm going to continue my progress!

Four additional things I learned to love this past week about Core Fusion:
1. The fact that the sweat level post-class isn't egregious (Philbin)

2. You can wear whichever shoes you'd like to class because you simply wear socks while you're Core Fusioning.

3. Going with a friend is more fun. I started coordinating with Jenn Falik so we could make WTF faces at each other during the bar portion of class when our thighs would start burning from squatting all the way down and halfway up.

4. The tush lifts at the end are totally reminiscent of that hilar part of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion when Romy says to Michele, "Michele? What does this remind you of?" And then Michele responds, "Oh I KNOW, this lady is totally sick!" I think of that part every time the end of class nears. Check it out at 1:08 below:

I'm continuing my Core Fusion relationship by taking weekly classes at the Gansevoort Park Avenue Exhale Spa location and am investing in packages in 10-packs, while switching that up with the DVDs chez my new apartment once I move at the end of the month. I'll have room to pulse! And do pretzels!

You can buy the 7-disc DVD set for $70 on QVC.

Thanks to Fred Devito for the opportunity to do the project!

Kickstand Sideburns At Yves Saint Laurent's Fall 2011 Runway Show

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

What do we think of these "kickstand sideburns," dolls?

I just got the deets on this one from Redken. The look at Yves Saint Laurent was slightly boyish with hair pulled into a low knot with a strong sideburn statement. “This style is a bit boyish, which is what we’ve seen a lot of this season.
