Birks.com

Friday, October 29, 2010

If you're feeling like you need ice your situation up for impending holiday parties and the like, look no further. I have the best jewelry store suggestion. Birks.com is a Canadian online bauble shop featuring an enormous selection of pendants, rings, bracelets and earrings in a variety of metals and stone combinations. Best of all, you can even sell your unwanted gold to them via a user-friendly link on their website to request a kit that includes instructions on how to send in your items in exchange for cash.

Definitely one to keep in mind for your holiday gift shopping. Don't forget, the holiday madness begins in mere DAYS, friends. Where does the time go?

A Supplement That Will Help Your Hair Grow Long

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Ohai!

I didn't see you there because I was busy looking at the back of my hair growing PAST MY BRA STRAP in the mirror. This is my new favorite activity since my hair's grown an amazing 3-4 inches since the end of August. This is unprecidented hair growth for my mane, which likes to call it quits a little past my collarbones. What do I have to thank for this Alicia Silverstone circa Aerosmith's Crazy video? A little pill (doll!) called Selenium.

Or as I like to call it, Selenium Dion. I first learned about this vitamin's hair growth helping potensh from hairstylist Gary at the epic IT&LY HAIRFASHION awards show I attended in Vegas last month as a VIP guest. In fact, I've rewritten one of its namesake, Celine Dion's, signature songs to express my feelings about this wonder supplement.

Fictionary: Gampaign

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty-related words that don't exist, but should.

When it gets colder, I find I have to be more gambitious when it comes to ensuring my stems are super smooth and moisturized. In the summer, I find I don't need to work so hard on getting my gams to maintain their hydrated status. But in the fall and winter? I have to launch a gampaign. It's two-fold and it involves a drugstore bargain and a higher-end luxe lotion.

The first step is shaving with my new fave shave accoutrement Skintimate Cream Shave Moisturizing for Dry Skin in Cashmere Rain ($4). This stuff is thick like a milkshake and boasts stunning glide for my razor while it holds in moisture like it ain't no thing. I experience a marked difference with this stuff, so I'm happy to throw down a reasonable $4 every time I've run out of the convenient tube, which stands straight up in the shower.

After I've exited shower world, I lightly towel off and apply while my skin is still damp my new favorite body cream, Kiehl's new Creme de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Whipped Body Butter ($35). It is SUBLIME. It's even decorated in a limited-edition jar by contemporary artist Jeff Koons. With the shared vision of creating safer, more sustainable environments for children, the Kiehl’s and KOONS partnership will raise awareness and funds through the sale of the Limited Edition Creme de Corps Holiday Collection, a four-product collection which includes the above body butter. 100% of Kiehl’s net profits from the sale of each product will benefit The Koons Family Institute, an initiative of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC). This scented cream's light application belies its 24-hour hydration. And yet, it's quickly absorbed leaving only its delish fragrance in its wake. You, your parched arms, legs and feet will LURVE it.

What's your fall gampaign? Share in the comments!

Holiday Gift Guide 2010: InStyle Ultimate Beauty Secrets.

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Ohai! This year's BBJ Holiday Gift Guide is starting early, it seems. I wanted to let you know about a little gem you'll want to give to your beauty-focused friend who knows everything--because the biggest room in the world? Room for improvement. This tome gave even yours truly a run for my beauty-tip money. One of my faves: Wash your face with dandruff shampoo if your skin is dry and flaky once a month. This reduces the yeast levels that that cause scaly skin.

Plus Q&As where InStyle's beauty editors address readers' burning beauty questions accompany each chapter. The book is available today, October 26 at instyle.com/ultimate for $23.

Kenneth Cole Spring 2011 And Blogger Dinner

Monday, October 25, 2010

As you can see, the epic Kenneth Cole does not miss out on an opportunity to throw some of his clever, pithy copywriting on some stuff--not even when it comes to furniture. This is one of the chairs at the designer's first blogger dinner and Kenneth Cole Spring 2011 collection launch last week. Considering this was his first foray into a social media-driven event, he demonstrated he's a fast learner and got the concept of a new-media invitation by recording a video invite to all the blogger recipients on a Sony Bloggie.

Bed Bath and Freaking Beyond + A Giveaway

Dolls, the title is an allusion to that hilar episode of Sex and the City when Mario Cantone's character screams that his mother is constantly calling to ask what kind of comforter she should get from "Bed Bath and Freaking Beyond."

It's apropos because the Bed Bath & Beyond on 61st Street at 1st Avenue in Manhattan is morphing into the ultimate beauty destination, featuring a designated L’Oréal Paris area with skincare, hair care, cosmetics and hair color. I love when I can get my beauty products and sheets at the same store. Best of all? Unlike drugstores, there will be L’Oréal Paris beauty advisors at the boutique every day to assist with purchases, selecting shades and helping you find the the formula best for you.

The store is hosting a kick-off party at the UES location on Thursday, October 28 from 5-8pm. Free samples of cosmetics and hair care (including the brand's legendary Elnett hairspray--snag one while you can!) and free mini makeovers from the L’Oréal Paris Pro-team will be available.

AND L'Oreal Paris has offered to give a $100 gift card to a BBJ reader. To enter, follow me on Twitter and RT Follow @glambr and RT to enter to win a $100 gift card! Winner announced 10/29. #giveaway #freebie.

Good luck!

Recommended Reading: Your So-called Life + A Giveaway

I was at my parents' house in my former bedroom rocking a little zit cream on my screaming phone-zone uninvited FRIEND catching up on teen mags dealing with crippling cramps, listening to Jon Secada's Just Another Day and wondering why I don't have a boyfriend A FEW WEEKS ago when it occurred to me that astoundingly little has changed for me since 1993.

House of Dereon Spine Tattoo is Lilliputian

My pal Lilit over at TheGloss just tipped me off  about how a colleague of hers bought one of those back-covering House of Dereon temporary tattoos, only to find out that it was "about four inches long and couldn’t even cover a doll’s back." What a scam!

Totes reminds of that mo' of cinematic genius in Zoolander when Derek shakes the model of the school and cries, "What is this? A school for ants? It needs to be at least three times that size!"

Perhaps House of Dereon should switch its name to House of Ants? Or perhaps House of Lies? What do we think?

Mad Men Costume Designer Janie Bryant Launches Nail Polish Line with Nailtini

The limited edition collection—available at Duane Reade Look Boutiques and QVC.com—features four polishes in festive metallics. Very pour yourself a drink, n'est-ce pas?

Fictionary: Talon-ted

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty-related words that don't exist, but should.

I envy those who can paint on wild nail art with reckless abandon. I'll never be that girl with the steady hand. Alas, I've mastered the self-manicure (though I can never hold a candle to the talon-ted Michelle). Talon-ted is this week's Fictionary entry and it means being skilled at freehand nail art.

And for those (like moi) who aren't talon-ted? There's  the new Color Club Bewitching Collection Kit ($14), featuring four mini lacquers (Bewitching, a snazzy black; Charmed I'm Sure, a hot purple; Spellbound, a bright orange; and Hocus Pocus, a sparkly silver glitter) and decals for easy-to-apply spooktacular tips.

Incidentally, I have no idea why the majority of the Fictionary column is nail-related words. Perhaps in the same manner that Eskimos have over 200 words for snow, I have multiple names to express my love of paraphernailia. Call it varnacular.

Okay, I'm done.

Disclaimer: I received a sample of this for editorial consideration

Here's another giveaway, friends! It's a giveaway bonanza this week on BBJ. We're giving away a Tory Burch CD and a Peter Thomas Roth masque, now we're shifting to fashion. This time, it's all about a Gemvara Silver Initial Key Pendant.

I recently sat down with Gemvara founder Matt Lauzon and was fascinated by this 25 year-old entrepreneur's cool choose-your-own-adventure type of jewelry site. You choose your own piece (ring, earrings, necklace, etc.), then pick a metal, and finally select a gemstone. The combos are infinite. Gemvara has generously offered up one sterling silver initial key necklace (valued at $215) for one lucky Beauty Blogging Junkie reader. The pendant was actually inspired by the key necklace Leighton Meester was sporting on the set of this season’s Gossip Girl. The winner will email me the initial she wants and Gemvara can customize it  and it will ship within two to three weeks.

Here's how to enter the Gemvara.com Giveaway: 1. If you haven't already, fan the Gemvara page on Facebook

This father of two shared his tricks about looking confident in photographs and how he keeps his skin looking fabulous.

Random Beauty Product from Another Country I'm Irrationally Obsessed With: Inglot Cosmetics

The Beauty Product from Another Country I'm Irrationally Obsessed With column features international beauty gems that cross my path about which I feel you, the reader, are on a need-to-know.

Jak się masz?

Look at THIS gorgeosity. Inglot Cosmetics is a Polish beauty brand, but it's available worldwide. I'm smitten with Inglot's entire range, most notably their brushes, breathable nail enamel and makeup, pictured at left. Those BLUES. That palette of blue-green aquamarine wonder. Truly, if a water nymph were to apply makeup, she'd surely have that palette in her underwater vanity table.

Best of all? This is not a sad story financially nor geographically. New Yorkers can journey on over to the store's location in Midtown West at 1592 Broadway (at 48th Street). AND eyeshadows and lipsticks start at a wallet-friendly $12. Run, don't walk.

Fictionary: Getting FollOCular

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty-related words that don't exist, but should.

Dolls, last weekend, I was in New Jersey for a weekend-long wedding extravaganza for my friend Stacey. My bridesmaid hair looked fierce--when you say you like big hair in Jers, by gosh you GET big hair. They don't mess around with volume. Anywho, come Sunday, my hair needed a little help. The volumized curls I'd been rocking the night before were wilting and needed a little pick-me-up. Unfortunately, my Bumble and bumble  Surf Spray, which I'd use for this type of occasion, was at home in my blockade of Sterilite drawers I use to store my beauty items. And everything I brought was only for use on wet hair and I was NOT washing my hair for this brunch after the Champagne-soaked evening I'd had.

What to do?

Upgraded Back to the Future Trilogy Set Features Scenes with Eric Stoltz!

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

AAHHH!
Fans of Fringe already know that Eric Stoltz was originally cast in Back to the Future, thanks to a scene in the show's alternate reality featuring a movie marquee advertising a viewing of Back to the Future starring Eric Stoltz. The twin towers also still stand, in this alternate reality.

BTTF superfans like moi (it's my ultimate favorite movie) are counting down the days until the upgraded trilogy set on blu-ray which comes out October 26, just one day after the 25th anniversary of the date when Marty journeyed back in time in 1985, drops. For five weeks in 1984, Eric Stoltz was Marty McFly and you can see the deleted scenes in the new set. Check out the video Nymag.com has posted to see poor Eric playing the part in a far more dramatic interpretation.

Can you IMAGINE BTTF without Michael J. Fox? It'd be like... the Alternate 1985. And, if Eric Stoltz's Marty McFly met Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly would there be a time paradox that might destroy the universe?

I can't wait to get my damn hands ON this trilogy set.

NARS Bento Box Set: Holiday 2010

François Nars has always been inspired by Japanese culture, specifically the concept of Kabuki makeup. Years ago, after traveling to Japan, François brought back a small, porcelain pot with a red film of color– Kabuki makeup for the lips. This simple cosmetic inspired his latest holiday uber-limited-edition item, the NARS Bento Box Set--two Kabuki cups that were hand-poured with a new exclusive-to-NARS lipstick formula in highly pigmented shades containing Vitamin E. Housed in a handmade bento box, the set also comes with a Kabuki lip brush, designed for precise application by dipping the brush into the cup and blending until desired coverage is achieved.

The set will be available as of November 1 for $125 at narscosmetics.com. Get on the wait list now at narscosmetics.com/bento. Only one thousand sets were created for sale in the United States, and just over two thousand in total were created worldwide.
