Gals, allow me a brief update. I'm pretty behind on my posts as I've somehow been heavily involved in CASINO CULTURE these past two weeks. I just got back from Las Vegas for my friend Mitch's wedding with a bunch of my guy friends from college. I came back with a cold, a Joan Rivers voice and a pretty severe hangover.
The weekend before that, I went on a press trip to Foxwoods where I met--wait for it--DONNIE WAHLBERG from New Kids on the Block. In the epic words of my gal Tamar, 1988 me had no idea what to do with 2010 me. Check out the pic on the left with Donnie, myself and a member of Donnie's entourage.
My Foxwoods trip included an NKOTB concert, some spa treatments and a couple of delish meals. Stay tuned for my full Foxwoods review!

What's On Anne Fritz's Vanity?
The What's On Your Vanity Series showcases a single beauty item a blogger loves because it's effective, but also she feels she must keep out on top of her vanity because the gorgeous packaging must be displayed.
Anne Fritz is one half of the dynamic duo (the other half is Hope Schmid) who write The Jet Set Girls, a blog chock-full of all you need to know for a girls' getaway. Anne's ravishing red mane is always covetable, she's always dressed to kill and boasts a wealth of knowledge about fashion and beauty. Naturally, Anne's on-vanity item is hair-related--because she's a gal after my own heart. Here's what's on Anne's vanity, in her words:
Now that it's summer, I'm all about putting the blowdryer in storage and letting my hair air-dry while rocking its natural wave. The Oribe Curl by Definition Creme comes in a blue-black jar that's elegant and sexy enough to look like it's hiding jewels or the missing ingredient to a love potion. But what's inside is even better--a curl-enhancing cream that's won't weigh your hair down (my tresses are on the fine-side), yet gives texture and definition and puts and end to frizz.
I like to pretend I spent the weekend in to St. Tropez and brought home perfect, beach-y waves as my souvenir.

Rodney Cutler Designs Hairstyle for Patricia Field's House of Field Swimwear Show
Thursday, May 27, 2010
On Tuesday night, I journeyed over to 230 Fifth to attend the drag queen studded, glamazing Patricia Field's House of Field Swimsational Disco Soiree. Let me tell you: This is NOT the place to show up rocking your Wall Street duds, which, unfort, is exactly what I did. How I wish I had a flux capacitor and a De Lorean because if so, I'd definitely rock my sequined tank, some skinnies and my sparkly Courtney Crawford 5-inch heels. Such is life. At least there was some pretty fantastical hair on which to report, right?
Redken created the hairstyle for the launch of Sex and the City 2’s costume designer Patricia Field’s House of Field Eyewear, Swimwear and Beach Towels in NYC.
To complement the super glam looks designed by the queen of costume designing herself along with David Dalrymple, Rodney Cutler for Cutler/Redken pushed the envelope in hair styling as he created the perfect youthful fishtail-ed updo to play on Patricia’s eye for sophisticated fashion: “The high fishtail braid is a fun evening looking and very wearable. We've seen so many buns up top and this is just taking it one step further," explained Cutler.
To create the look, Rodney prepped hair by applying Redken align 12 protective straightening lotion and blow-dryed through with a medium brush. Next, he tightly gathered into a high ponytail on the very top of the head, about three inches from the hair line and secured with an elastic. He then took a small piece of hair and wrapped around the elastic and secured with a bobby pin. Next, a fish-tail braid was weaved down to the end of the hair and pinned in upon itself right at the hairline. The look was finished with Redken vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray for shine and Redken forceful 23 super strength finishing spray for extra strong hold for a look that undeniably shouted “Hello Lover” on the runway!
Tip: Rodney geniusly applied a bit of Redken Align to the back of his hand and used tiny amounts on each section before fishtailing to minimize flyaways.
Here's how to get this sci-fi, edgy look:
1) Split the hair to be braided into two equal sections
2) Pull a small strand of hair from the left section and add it to the right section
3) Then, pull a small strand of hair from the right section and add it to the left
4) That will create a small X
5) Repeat until all the hair is used
6) Secure with a clear plastic band

Exfoliation Nation: DDF Revolve 400X Micro-polishing System Review
DDF gives the Clarisonic a run for its beauty gadget money with its new Revolve 400X Micro-polishing System ($95). This is no pansy exfoliation tool: It's SERIOUS business. The DDF Revolve 400X Micro-polishing System reveals smoother, more even skin while unplugging pores like Desmond unplugged that center stone out of the source on the series finale of LOST. Look, I'm not saying clearing my pores is exactly the same as LOST's allegorical good versus evil themes, but all I'm saying is that there are parallels. That's all.
Kamikaze Makeovers At The Sex And The City 2 Premiere!
Wednesday, May 26, 2010
On Monday evening, I was given an exclusive opportunity to join Purple Lab creatrix Karen Robinovitz and her team of tireless interns on a genius guerilla kamikaze-makeover marketing mission by the Sex and the City 2 premiere red carpet!
The interns donned cigarette girl trays and approached ticket holders in line for the premier to offer them Purple Lab makeovers while they waited. Because how can you watch Carrie reunite with Aidan and not have a smoky eye to go with it?

Moviegoers were touched up courtesy of interns Eve (pictured, above, with myself and Purple Lab intern Melissa) and Ashley (pictured, right) using an array of Purple Lab products including Cheek Implants, Lashionista Modelista and Huge Lips Skinny Hips. The team also outfitted red carpet gawkers and ticketholders with Footpetals inserts and ring pops.
Both lucky ticketholders and gawkers were utterly grateful for the snacks and sole savers!
Will you see the movie? I'm taking in an advance screening tonight and am counting down the minutes, though I don't have super-high expectations. Obviously I'm most psyched to see the hair, makeup and FASHION.
Will report back after I've seen it!

LOST Series Finale Review: Was it Really Worth You Going Out Like That?
Tuesday, May 25, 2010
*WARNING: If you haven't yet seen the LOST series finale, don't READ this, for the love. It contains major spoilers*
It's been an epic journey, hasn't it friends? My initial reaction to the series finale was one of total anger. It then turned to a vague acceptance. I think it ended poignantly and movingly--but it just wasn't RIGHT. I'm so disappointed. I'm a cult fan. I read Bad Twin. I've spent time researching the De Groots. I've involved myself in The Lost Experience. I know who Rachel Blake is. I've spent hours analyzing literary allusions the writers made. I checked out that canonical site about how yellow labs are magical. But in the final analysis, I have to use the epic words of Whitney Houston: It's not right, but it's okay. I'm gonna make it ANYWAY.
Keep in mind this is my opinion. I'm aware that many people loved it and thought it ended perfectly. Feel free to comment and tell me why you loved OR hated the finale in the comments.

In other news, Losties, are we dying over last night's series finale of LOST? I'm still digesting it, and will provide my thoughts on it once I get a handle on my feelings. For the moment, I'm feeling that it didn't really work for me. While I believe there was truth to it and it was incredibly poignant--it just didn't feel RIGHT. What are your initial reactions?

Carol's Column: Trial and Error
Sunday, May 23, 2010
Thomas Edison famously said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. I’ve come to realize that genius in makeup is more evenly balanced--50% product and 50% application. Obtaining good products is a must, of course, but knowing how, when and where to apply them is half the battle.
A further caveat regarding the first task: Make sure that the product is right for you. Don’t rely on the “experts.” As with Edison, only personal trial and error will work. For instance, I recently decided to buy a foundation from one of my favorite cosmetic brands. I wasn’t sure which shade was right for my pale skin--should I go for a match or should I go darker? As an experiment, I sought advice from three of their representatives. Each one chose a radically different color for me! So much for expertise. I wound up making my own choice, based on what looked best to my own eye.

Shoe Porn: Christian Louboutin Sequin-Scale Very Prive Pump
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Confession: I start every day with a quick trip to see what's on Bergdorf Goodman's Shoe of the Day page.
A few days ago, the featured south-of-your-ankles gem was this pair of DEVASTATING Christian Louboutin Sequin-Scale Very Prive Pumps. At $1195, these are quite obviously out of my price range (that is, if I'd like to continue paying my rent). And even though Christian Louboutins are notoriously uncomfortable--so much so that wearers of the shoe confections actually told Christian Louboutin himself at the MET Costume Institute Gala a few weeks ago--I would still give my eyeteeth to rock these.
Why? Because in the sage words of my gal Samantha Fair (daughter of the fabled S.S. Fair), "Sometimes looking like a whore is more important than walking."
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Disclosure: I sure as hellfire don't own these, much as I'd like to.

Bodacious Blowout at Pierre Michel Salon
Ladies, if you're serious about volume (and why WOULDN'T you be), you need to experience the capable hands of Miss Cristina at Pierre Michel Salon. I went in there last weekend for a volume infusion (blowout--$60) after my latest keratin treatment at Maria Bonita Salon, and while I love that I have wash-&-go hair... I forgot that the initial couple weeks of a Brazilian Blowout leave me with hair that kind of resembles that of Axel Rose. Longish, lank, zero volume. It looks good on him when he's crooning about November Rain... but doesn't look so spesh on me when I'm preaching to you girls about big hair. I should look the part, n'est-ce pas?
MAC Venomous Villains Collection
Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Women's Wear Daily today announced that:
MAC Cosmetics will team up with Disney to create a limited edition color collection, intended to launch globally in late September in all MAC locations. The products will feature four Disney characters, on which the brand is keeping mum at the moment — although with a collection name of Venomous Villains, it is assumed that we’re not talking Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse here. Lipstick, powder, lip gloss and blush shades will be sold, ranging in price from $12 to $29.50.
Which villains do you think will grace the collection? My guess is Cruella DeVille, as she's certainly the most nefarious. I'd love to see a purple Ursula water-nymphesque collection, however.

What's On Eileen Dautruche's Vanity?
The What's On Your Vanity Series showcases a single beauty item a blogger loves because it's effective, but also she feels she must keep out on top of her vanity because the gorgeous packaging must be displayed.
I LIVE for Misswhoeveryouare.com's Eileen Dautruche. She's a total doll--quick with the wit, but very knowledgeable about beauty and fashion. I also love that she named her blog after a quote from one of the best movies ever, Breakfast at Tiffany's. She started her blog at the ripe age of 19 (I wish I'd had the wherewithal to start I blog when I was that age!) but her experience and professionalism far surpasses her 22 years. Also, Eileen graduated college this week! Yay, Eileen! Without further ado (as I like to say to her, "Come ON, Eileen"), here's Eileen's on-vanity item, in her words:

Estee Lauder Acquires Smashbox Cosmetics
Major beauty news this morn, gals. Straight from my inbox:
Estée Lauder announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics. The acquisition is expected to close in July 2010, subject to certain conditions, including regulatory approval. While terms of the deal were not disclosed, the Company said that the transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings in fiscal year 2011, before transaction and integration costs.
The Smashbox brand, with its unique equity positioning, is a strategic complement to The Estée Lauder Companies’ portfolio of leading prestige cosmetic brands. Smashbox’s significant presence in assisted open-sell environments and specialty distribution channels will expand The Estée Lauder Companies’ product offerings and reach new and younger consumers in these high-growth prestige channels. Additionally, The Estée Lauder Companies will leverage its extensive international experience as it seeks to grow the brand and engage Smashbox’s expertise in digital and social media to advance its current capabilities, an important and growing competency for the Company.
I'm excited to see how this pans out. It's a fantastic coup for EL and I wonder what (if any) changes are ahead for this LA studio-style makeup brand.

The What's On Your Vanity Series showcases a single beauty item a blogger loves because it's effective, but also she feels she must keep out on top of her vanity because the gorgeous packaging must be displayed.
S.S. Fair is my mentor, second Jewish mother (one isn't enough, evidently--you need one in every city in which you live) and favorite dinner and nails companion. In case you aren't aware (and you should be) she writes the Samurai Shopper column for T Magazine, and of late, has been blogging for the New York Times' The Moment blog. She's the end-all, be-all when it comes to finding the best in beauty, fashion, household and even dining gems. Natch, S.S. doesn't roll one product deep on her vanity. She needs to discuss FIVE. Are you excited for a sneak peek of what's on her vanity? In her words:

My vanity doesn't actually exist as a piece of furniture--the real vanity is mostly all in my head. But I do have an altar atop an carved dresser, a shrine to beauty products I know and love....at least this week.
I have ORTIGIA's Acqua di Colonia from Sicily, a gorgeous silver/orange package of sensuous Pomegranate scent that I use all day every day when the weather's warm.
When it's cold, NASOMATTO'S Black Afgano lights my fire.

They're flanked by two pint-sized candles from MANUEL CANOVAS-- whatever scent strikes me at the time...right now it's Bois de Lune.
ODILE LECOIN is my skin care line of choice, love the white and gold patterns and packaging. Odile's serum is called OR, Je Suis--Gold, I am and gold it is. Great, it is too.
I've got GUERLAIN Meteorites Face Powder at the ready and SKYN ICELAND'S Arctic Face Mist to set the powder: A little spritz'll do ya.

What's On Shmittenkitten.com's Anna Goldfarb's Vanity?
Saturday, May 15, 2010
The What's On Your Vanity Series showcases a single beauty item a blogger loves because it's effective, but also she feels she must keep out on top of her vanity because the gorgeous packaging must be displayed.Anna Goldfarb is the "Kitten-in-Chief" of my current favorite blog, Shmitten Kitten. If you're not reading it on a regular, I don't know what you're DOING with your lifestyle. She pens HILARIOUS posts about dating that are utterly relateable. Columns like Things In His House That Make Me Sad ( his black towels, his tiny, overflowing bathroom wastebasket for instance) and Bonerkiller (his tiny hands, for example) are totally things I've actually experienced (as I'm sure many of you have, too). I love that this Philadelphia resident has just as much Philly pride as someone born and raised there (though she's actually a Chicago native) and holds court there like a champ. Lastly, Anna is the ONLY person I've (not even) met who adores Back to the Future as much as I do. I secretly think wedding themes are totally repugnant--except for an Enchantment Under The Sea Dance motif. That would be totally acceptable. Anywho, Anna boasts impressive knowledge of beauty in addition to dating (hence this post of hers). In her words, she shares what's on her vanity. Check it:
I do not leave my house to go on a hot date without swiping Benefit's Thrrrob blush on my cheeks. It makes me feel invincible. I don't know if it contains Mighty Mouse's ground bones in it or what, but it gives me an extra boost of confidence to approach any guy I want. It's downright magical. And--I have to confess--it's my lucky blush. It's a good luck charm for sure. If it's on my face, I KNOW that it's gonna be a great night. Plus, the name is so super sexy it's hard not to feel like a vamp as I apply it (which is dorky to admit, but it's true.)
Thanks, Anna!

What's On Jason Backe's Vanity?
Thursday, May 13, 2010
The What's On Your Vanity Series showcases a single beauty item an industry insider loves because it's effective, but also he feels he must keep out on top of his vanity because the gorgeous packaging must be displayed. So like, a month ago, I asked celebrity colorist (and my colorist and fave Dallas BBQ dinner date) Jason Backe via email to tell me what's on his vanity. You know. For the series. No word back for a long time. I have experience dealing with Jason's occasionally delinq behavior as his former editor at Daily Makeover. I figured he was biz and let it go.

Primping Poll: Are You Grossed out by Hair Items in the Kitchen?
I have a primping poll for you gals.
So, when I was growing up, Carol, my mother would just about lose her MIND if I brought my hairbrush, barrettes or hair products into the kitchen. While I wouldn't pull a Marcia Brady and brush my mane 1,000 times while I eat, a little primping in the same place where food is prepared/consumed just doesn't really bother me. And now, my lifestyle totally freaks Carol out. Not only do I blow out my hair mere feet from where I eat on my couch (I live in a stu-stu-studio, EVERYTHING is pretty much done in the same room), my beauty writer vocation means I wind up eating about a 1/4 of my meals while I'm getting a hair treatment done at events. Read: I'm frequently noshing on a piece of watermelon topped with goat cheese while simultaneously having a trim. This is perfectly fine with me, but Carol would DRY heave if she were to find out (don't tell her).
On a related note, my FATHER is grossed out beyond belief by the smell of nail polish. I had to wait until he wasn't home to do my nails even in my room with the door shut, windows open, on another FLOOR. I'd have to flush used nail-polish-remover-soaked cotton balls so they wouldn't stink up the trash can. My theory that men loathe the smell of nail parapherna(i)lia has never been disproven. Have you met a man who is okay with that scent? Save maybe, for one who works at a nail salon?
What say you? Are you totes grossed out by a little touching up in your dining/food prep area? Or are you fine with it as, I, a total heathen in Carol's opinion, am? Tell me in the comments.

Official Mascara Correspondent: Estee Lauder Sumptuous Color Mascara in Emerald and Sapphire Review
Here's the latest from BBJ Official Mascara Correspondent Ashleigh Ciucci. This time, she takes Estee Lauder Sumptuous Color Bold Volume Lifting Mascaras in Emerald and Sapphire for a test drive. Here is her verdict:
Being slightly skeptical towards colored mascaras, I was anxious to try these bold shades. The medium-lengthed cone-shaped brush fully coated my lashes with high-pigmented color. I was pleasantly surprised that on bare lashes, the colors really showed up after just one coat. There was no need to layer on top of a single coat of black mascara to achieve impact. The second coat clumped slightly, but I was able to counteract the clumping by removing excess product from the brush and combing through. Sapphire was my fave. This mascara requires eyemakeup remover. I would def buy this one.
The Estee Lauder Sumptuous Color Bold Volume Lifting Mascara retails for $19.50.
