Great Smelling Hairsprays

Sunday, February 28, 2010

Let's be real with each other: We all have Aquanet-soaked memories of 80s hairstyles. Big, volumized hairstyles came at the price of massive flammability and a most unsexy scent. There have been many advances in hair product technology and while they range from the surge of sulfate-free shampoos to nourishing treatments that restore health withinin the span of a single shower--none are so universally lauded and appreciated as the great smelling hairspray. Here, a few of my fave olfactory delights.

Neil_George_70x70.jpg
  • Neil George Perfect Hold Hairspray ($22, beauty.com)
Coconut-scented, this flexible holding agent will transport you to a veritable vaca while it ensures your 'do stays decidedly local.

Orlando_Pita_70x70.jpg
  • T3 Control Heat-Seeking Hairspray ($19, sephora.com)
This citrus-scented formula was created by head hair honcho Orlando Pita. It's brushable, yet yields strong hold.

Moroccan_Oil_70x70.jpg
  • Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray ($20, skinone.com)
Sultry, musky-scented Argan oil is the secret ingredient in this hairspray, so holds while moisturizing parched strands simultaneously.

Herbal_Essences_70x70.jpg
  • Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Hair Spray ($3, amazon.com)
Herbal Essences' hairspray is a non-aerosol iteration that smells slightly floral, thanks to its violet splash fragrance. Boosts volume while providing subtle hold.

Suave_70x70.jpg
  • Suave Weather Protection 365 ($3, available in June, drugstore.com)
This all-weather finishing spray smells fruity, but not overtly so. It even has UV filters help protect your mane from the elements.

Purple Lab Huge Lips Skinny Hips Worship Kate Lip Gloss

In high school, one of my friends kept a photo album stuffed with Kate Moss photos. My gal Karen Robinovitz has a similar Kate obsesh and created the Worship Kate shade of her Huge Lips Skinny Hips Lip Gloss in her honor. This sheer, berry-toned mauve is a your-lips-but-better tint that is perfect for toting with you on the go. If glossy, plump lips with a side of appetite suppressing Hoodia isn't something you want to get involved in, I don't know what you're DOING.

Don't forget to check out some of my other fave Purple Lab products--the skin-care infused Silk Sheets Foundation and Cheek Implants Cream Blush.

Salon AKS For Fab Blow-Outs and Manicures

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I took a little baby break during Fashion Week Fall 2010 to head to midtown delight Salon AKS for a relaxing blow-out and manicure.

Hair stylist Sadah blew out my winter-ravaged mane quickly and infused it with runway worthy volume and bounce. The salon boasts a fab array of products including Moroccanoil and Phyto. Blow-outs at Salon AKS range in price from $60-$90.

Then I headed to one of the salon's private manicure rooms (great for catching up with a pal--I filled my friend Marina in on my latest dating ridiculosity whilst she enjoyed a pedi and I got a mani). Galina, my nail tech was extremely precise and balked when I told her I only had five minutes to dry because I had to run to a show. Well, Galina said no way, Jose--wait ten minutes and there's no two ways about it. I wound up skipping the show in exchange for a flawless, glossy mani and I have no regrets. The manicure lasted a straight week with zero chips. I selected Deborah Lippmann's Call Me Irresponsible, a purple that is hot without being neon. The salon's signature manicure will run you $35, but they also offer a "lap manicure" during any hair service for $28. Perf for the gal on the go.

Salon AKS is located at
689 Fifth Avenue
10th Floor
New York, NY 10022

Eye Makeup Worthy of Ziggy Stardust

David Bowie's album The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust is the story of, naturally, Ziggy Stardust. According to Bowie, he's the human manifestation of an alien being who is attempting to present humanity with a message of hope in the last five years of its existence. Per Wikipedia, Ziggy Stardust is the definitive rock star: sexually promiscuous, wild in drug intake and with a message, ultimately, of peace and love; but he is destroyed both by his own excesses of drugs and sex, and by the fans he inspired.

Ziggy Stardust Set

The concept is sort of smarmy. But I find its underlying theme of excess, wild feminization and sparkle quite fabulous. I mean, if there's only five years to go until the end of the earth, why SHOULDN'T we wear glittery eye shadow to ring in the end of days? I think so. To that end, my favorite sparkly eye makeup items worthy of Ziggy of late are:

  • Urban Decay Stardust Eye Shadow in Diamond Dog: the perfect glimmery lavender
  • Purple Lab Lashionista Modelista: made with real diamond dust!
  • Stila Jewel Eyeshadow Palette: this limited-edition delight's gleam is reminiscent of a starry night and features four wearable shades

Check them out for yourself and emerge from the shadows, Lady Stardust. Sidenote: I love that the straight and married-to-Iman David Bowie loves glitter more than your garden variety gay. What are your favorite ways to sparkle this spring?

Amanda Seyfried's Celebrity Hairstyle Virtual Makeover

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Celebrity_Hair_Heist_Black.gif
Amanda_Seyfried_Before.jpg

I'll just say it: Amanda Seyfried is gorgeous. The girl looks like a doll. The quintessential cheerleaderesque blonde has proven her range as an actress with her complicated character Sarah Henrickson on Big Love. Though Gretchen Wieners couldn't pull it off, I'd argue that Amanda's character Karen Smith did make fetch happen. I'm constantly blown away by Amanda's sleuth ability to pick the perfect medium pink lipsticks to compliment her pale complexion. While I'd posit that her hair is the only reason to watch her latest movie Dear John, there's zero follicular variation throughout the movie. Amanda also doesn't change her 'do much when she glams it up on the red carpet. It's gorgeous hair--hair I covet, even--but it's always the same old, same old with her. Frankly, you're boring me, Amanda. Let's throw you in the makeover studio and see how you'd look in some edgier 'dos, 'kay?

AmandaS_AnneH_Heist.jpg

Anne Hathaway's long, angled bob would give innocent Amanda a small amount of street cred--she currently has all the rough edges of a Skittle. Now that's a style even Mean Girls' Janis Ian would appreciate for its slightly rockin' effect.

AmandaS_RachelM_Heist.jpg

Rachel McAdams' casual boho-braided updo would give Amanda a softer hippie vibe that would be a welcome change of pace from her usual Breck Shampoo commerical hair.

AmandaS_ReeseW_Heist.jpg

Reese Witherspoon's wispy bangs add a playfulness to Amanda's signature very long hair.

What do you think of Amanda Seyfried's virtual makeovers? Which do you like best?

Noah's Naturals Grapefruit Shower Gel

Girls, I have the flu. And when I have the flu, all I do is infuse myself with a TON of orange juice and get involved with copious amounts of TV and books, always with a theme. There was the Renaissance Flu of 2008. Then, there was Vampire Cold of 2009. 2010's theme was sci-fi, it seems. I spent the past couple of days catching up on Caprica and rewatching Back To The Future.

Theme TV is one antidote, as is OJ. But in order to finally drag myself out of my apartment and back to the manic pace that is my job when I'm not quite 100%, I find nothing wakes me up like a citrus-infused shower gel. I've talked many times about my favorite orange scents, but I was recently introduced to a bargain priced grapefruit iteration and it has WOWED me. Bonus: It's also all natural. Noah's Naturals Grapefruit Shower Gel ($8) smells in equal parts fruity and tart, lathers in a satisfying manner and refreshed my flu-ravaged achy muscles with aplomb. The environmentally friendly brand is also paraben-, sulfate- and fragrance-free.

Noah's Naturals Grapefruit Shower Gel is available at drugstore.com.

Carol's Column: Dress Me, Kate?

By Carol (my mother)

On Monday, The New York Times Business section ran a front page article called “Selling a Celebrity Look.” Above the title were two photos, one of the movie star Kate Winslet, the other, also of a Kate, who, though attractive, was simply an ordinary citizen. Both were wearing similar, non-descript outfits. As I read on, I learned that whole internet industries have sprouted, in order to “monetize” the penchant of average mortals to imitate the clothing choices of the rich and famous.

Far be it from me, particularly in this economy, to decry ways in which enterprising people can make a buck, legitimately, with no harm done. But I gotta say, looking at the two photos I can only scratch my head and say, “Whuhhh?" I mean, I really like Kate Winslet, she is one of my favorite young actresses and a huge talent, but a fashion maven? I don’t think so. (And I suspect she would agree.)

Schlubbily attired in a loose, dark shift and blah white cardigan, she looked okay, but truly nothing special. Yet the other Kate couldn’t wait to “recreate” the look.

I mean, I could understand taking Kate Moss as a style icon. That gal’s got it innately. And while we’re on the Kate continuum, there’s always Kate Hudson, to say nothing of such non-Kate stars as Sharon Stone, Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie and many more who invariably look fabulous.

So, click away, celebrity devotees, and purchase those duds, if you will, but please, please discriminate.

Giveaway: ZENO Hot Spot

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Gals, I have a very close relashe with my Zeno. I still get the occasional zit, much to this 29-and-a-half-year-old's continued shock and awe. I don't leave for vacations without stashing it in my carry-on luggage as it's the quickest, most painless way to send zits the way of Jon and Kate's relationship in a flash.

At the first sign of an under-the-skin blemish forming, I've started employed the brand's newest product called the ZENO HOT SPOT. Just like its larger version, the HOT SPOT uses heat to kill bacteria in just 2.5 minutes. It's battery operated, so it's perfect for carrying with you in your purse AND it's much less expensive than its full size counterpart at only $40. Each HOT SPOT boasts 80 uses.

Want to enter to win your own? I'm giving away two ZENO HOT SPOTS.

Here's how to enter: Follow me on Twitter (@glambr) and RT this: Enter to win a ZENO HOTSPOT! http://bit.ly/deZt9m. I'll DM the winner on Friday, so you need to follow me to win.

The giveaway is open to U.S. and Canadian residents only. Deadline is 5pm EST on Friday, February 26.

Good luck!

SJP NYC!

SJP NYC!

Sometimes in this biz, you have an experience that makes the late nights, the 2-drink maximum (you can't ever be hungover when you work 18 hours a day), and the manic pace which would intimidate even the most busiest professional on earth yawn in exhaustion 100% worth it. I was coming off of 15 straight days of work, Fashion Week, the beginnings of a cold, but hell if I wasn't tickled pink to meet Miss Sarah Jessica Parker herself to discuss her new fragrance, SJP NYC. We also had a chance to chat with the fabulous Mr. Joe Zee, Creative Director of ELLE. He was such a delight. He told me his favorite fall trend is "a return to luxurious materials like fur and croc." He also shared that Erin Kaplan and Olivia Palermo of The City do their own hair and makeup.

Emily from ELLE.com, Andrea Lavinthal from realbeauty.com, SJP, moi and Laura from styleist.com

I took my seat at the event across from the fabulous Andrea Lavinthal from Real Beauty and the two of us proceeded to nervously wring our hands and anticipate the greatest style icon New York has ever known. You know, not to be dramatic. We all identify. As I've said before, living in NYC, you meet a bevy of blondes (and even brunettes!) who think they're Carrie Bradshaw. Anyone who's held a pen, has ever been single, has or does not have curly hair claims to be "JUST like her." After seven years of living here, the comparison becomes more cliche than... a bunny eating a carrot. And yet, even though it's the most hackneyed thing in the world... I was losing my mind over being in the same room as the woman who plays everyone's favorite character. In anything. Ever.

Though I was surprised by my irrational indecision when it came to picking out an outfit for this shindig, I wasn't surprised to find that Sarah Jessica is fairylike in both appearance and personality. Her gracious wit and curiosity and vocabulary would impress many a scholar.

The fragrance is inspired, of course, by Carrie Bradshaw. It's a fruity floral with juicy top notes of strawberry and mandarin, a floral base and a drydown of rum accord. Definitely a sweet scent. In the words of SJP, it's "a party in a bottle!" My favorite part? The very Patricia Field bottle canister doubles as container for Q-tips in your bathroom or to use as a case for gum and lipstick in your purse. Love.

Thanks to Felicia Sullivan for sharing this video she took of SJP and Joe Zee chatting about the new fragrance.

SJP NYC retails for $35 at Macy's.

New: Make Up For Ever HD Blush

Friday, February 19, 2010

I was just perusing Make Up For Ever's website in search of hidden gems when I FOUND one. The colorful brand known for their luxe formulas and soft-focus effect has launched their new Make Up For Ever HD Blush. Just like Helen of Troy's visage was "the face that launched a thousand ships," Make Up For Ever's HD line--specifically their glamazing foundation--launched a thousand beauty blogger reviews.

This epic cream blush will be no different, I presume. It boasts the same second skin texture of the line's foundation but also yields high color pay-off.

Helen of Troy and Paris

I'm operating under the assumption that I'll wear it and instantly be courted by a Trojan prince. Why wouldn't I be?

Fashion Week: Funky, Chunky Haircolor

Thursday, February 18, 2010

CynthiaRowley.jpg

Ladies, check out the latest from Daily Makeover's Megan McIntyre about funky, chunky haircolor....

Looks like it's time to break out the Manic Panic. The big beauty trend for hair at Fashion Week was bright, chunky streaks of color that brought to mind punk-inspired street style circa 1996. At the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2010 fashion show, Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals custom colored hair extensions in shades of emerald, lapis, amethyst, navy and turquoise to replicate the rich jewel tones present in the collection. Each hair extension was completely saturated with professional salon haircolor and then woven into the hair and styled, creating an element of surprise and intrigue when models hit the runway.

Super stylist Ted Gibson for beauty.com went for a version of the trend that was a little easier to DIY at the Vena Cava Fall 2010 fashion show (shown below). He used Streekers to color hair extensions in shades of hot pink, purple and green, then pulled them back into the models' slightly mussed ponytails to give a "downtown, cool feel," to the otherwise equestrian look.

Vena_Cava.jpg

We think this is one trend that just might hit the trifecta of translating in all three worlds: runway, red carpet and real world. This is the second season funky color has been featured at Fashion Week (the girls at the Spring 2010 Proenza Schouler fashion show rocked lovely lilac streaks) and Lady Gaga recently caused a stir at the Grammys with her own spin on the Crayola color trend. Adding a bright streak of color to your coif is an easy way to add a hip edge to your regularly scheduled hairstyle without a huge commitment. Now all you really have to decide is which happy hue you want to adorn your hair with.

Behind The Scenes At HSN With PurpleLab's Karen Robinovitz

Karen and I in front of HSN!

Gals, last week, I got a chance to get a behind-the-scenes tour of HSN, thanks to the fabulous Karen Robinovitz from PurpleLab. She's presenting her double-duty beauty line for the network at 9am today, February 18 (and February 19 at 12pm and 7pm) with host Amy Morrison.

A benind-the-scenes room at HSN! Think there's enough monitors?

First of all, in Tampa (Glampa, when I'm there), the culture IS HSN. It plays everywhere, 24 hours a day. The Tampa Hilton plays the network on a loop. There's so much to every single second that goes on air on HSN (mind you, it's a 24/7 LIVE operation) that a casual viewer would never pick up. Every presenter is briefed vis-a-vis what's legal to say on-air and what isn't. For instance, the words "free radicals" don't fly.

Many on-air presenters are trained by the "father of home shopping," Bob Circosta. The man is ubertalented and teaches his disciples about the art of WISGAT, which stands for What Is So Great About That--meaning, presenters need to discuss each HSN product as a solution to a targeted problem for maximum audience identification and then identify exactly "what's so great about that."

Also: The most important word when presenting on HSN is YOU. HSN's hosts are trained to address each camera as if they were guests seated at a dinner party. So maybe that explains why I've been sucked into hours upon hours of shows featuring things I'm barely interested in. Don't act like that hasn't happened to you.

I learned that the hosts and presenters are constantly given a stream of feedback via a tiny earpiece that Karen liked to point out is very 24. It's invisible, but allows for producers to tell you which camera to look at (Bob advises that you look at it as if it's the third person in the room) and to keep you on target with your messaging and make sure it's all within HSN's legal parameters. It's a lot to keep track of when you're on the fly! They make it look so easy.

The slightly Dickensian call center at HSN

The company's culture is fascinating. In a very 1984 fashion, much communicate happens via television sets. They feature messages ranging from a silver bracelet was found on the 4th floor bathroom to item #209845 is sold out. I found the staff's corporate cheeriness to be genuine. I attribute this to their GLAMAZING cafeteria. No joke: Best scrambled eggs I've ever consumed. Karen and I considered coming there to eat should we wind up in Tampa for any business, HSN or otherwise.

THIS is the insane line of models who came for the PurpleLab casting call. It was all VERY ANTM!

Karen at the model casting call, interviewing one of the models chosen for before and after.

My favorite part of the trip? Karen held a model call to choose models for her on-air makeovers and before and after photos for the site. In the end we chose a fantastical group of gals ranging from age 20 to early 50s who embodied the PurpleLab energy. The four ladies we chose were fantastic! I even did befores and afters with them. Can't wait for my HSN debut!

The cards of the models we chose for befores and afters!

You NEED to see what PurpleLab can do for you. While at HSN, I became deeply enamored with the Silk Sheets Foundation (infused with skin care ingredients like) and Cheek Implants Cream Blush complete with collagen (I'm partial to Six Inch Heels, a suits-all-skin-tones pink). Want to get involved? Buy PurpleLab now on hsn.com.

Getting my hair done with makeup and hair artist Deanna Hawk for befores and afters for HSN.

A room where they watch the action happen!

That's me, posing on one of the kitchen sets, likely used by one Mr. Emeril! Bam!

What about you? Are you an HSN junkie? I've been known to get lured into hours of Adrienne Arpel. Tell me YOUR HSN story in the comments. And don't forget to watch Karen today!

Fashion Week Fall 2010: Lela Rose

Tarte for Beauty.com commissioned Tina Turnbow to create the makeup concept for the Lela Rose Fall 2010 Fashion Week show.

Overall Look
: The moonlit eyes are mysterious, while the complexion and lips have a cloudy, hazy feel.

How to Get the Look

Eyes:
Silvery, moonlit eyes-a silvery/black smoky eye without edges and just a touch of blue. The eye is almost 3D, rounded and mysterious.
direction: Think of the eye as a rounded sphere or planet. The inner crease of the eye is darkened up to the brow with the shimmery deep blue gray (eyeshadow in lucy I'm home). The outer area is rounded, softly muted blackness. The center of the eye is the lightest, with darker edges (inner and outer corner of eye) ending in black (eye couture palette). Apply blue lagoon only in the center of the top and lower lids. Blend the blue into the gray and then into a bit of the black. There should be a bit of the blue and silver gray (eye couture palette) blended in the center of the lower lashline. Apply smolderEYES in the inner rim of the eyes. Top it off with a coat of lights, camera, lashes! mascara on the top and bottom lashes (no curling needed). Leave eyebrows-do not fill in. After finishing the eyes, clean underneath with the eraser 4-in-1 natural concealer.

Complexion: It should feel muted like a hazy, cloudy sky. The mineral powder will matte and tone skin.
· the eraser 4-in-1 natural concealer-use after applying shadows to
avoid fallout.
· smooth operator oil-free tinted moisturizer with SPF 20
(one shade lighter than model's complexion)
· provocateur pressed mineral powder
· t-zone travel

Cheeks: Just a touch of healthy blush.
· blissful natural cheek stain (warm peachy pink)
· powder over blissful with provocateur pressed mineral powder

Make Lipstick With Crayons

My brother just alerted me to a fantastic step-by-step on how to make your own lipstick out of CRAYONS. You know, like a toddler would. Apparently, the color lasts longer and sticks to your lips better than your CHANEL Rouge Coco. Best of all, it's safe to ingest in small quantities as Crayola pretty much expects that your tot will try to eat an entire box of the stuff (which, apparently, you can do and suffer nothing more serious than a stomach ache).

Side story: In kindergarten, my still BFF Lee and I used to color our HAIR with crayons (Lemon Yellow was my color). It's one of my earliest memories. We also used to call each other on the phone nightly and tell what our five year-old selves thought were HILARIOUS jokes and sang Starship's "We Built This City" as we made... a pretend town out of blocks or whatever at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. Yeah, we took that one a bit literally.

Click here to find out how to make your own lipstick out of crayons! Perhaps a Brick Red or a Cerise to go with your new mini skirt?

Fashion Week Fall 2010: Thakoon

The Thakoon Fall 2010 Collection was inspired by '80s/'90s dance troop Chopinot & Gaultier’s Le Défilé. "I was inspired by the costumes used in this show and wanted to create a collection that reflected that same era but without the goth element," said designer Thakoon Panichgul.

NARS Cosmetics created the makeup look. “The look is fresh, beautiful, luminous and quite confident,” said lead NARS artist Diane Kendal about the look. “We focused on a strong brow and highlighted the eyes to show depth and boldness in a way that wouldn’t fight with the various textures, layers and colors of the collection.”

Products used:
FACE
·
Douceur Blush (NEW for Fall 2010); try Lovejoy or Madly Blush for a similar effect

EYES
·
Coconut Grove Single Eyeshadow (NEW for Fall 2010); try Bali Single Eyeshadow for a similar effect

·
Tzarine Duo Eyeshadow (NEW for Fall 2010); try the Orgasm Illuminator on brow bones for a similar effect

·
Portobello Duo Eyeshadow

LIPS
·
Tashkent Pure Matte Lipstick (NEW for Fall 2010); try Belle de Jour Velvet Matte Lip Pencil for a similar effect

Eugene Soleiman
lead the hair team, who used Wella products. The look was a "destroyed blowdry," and was created by curling random sections of hair among straighter pieces, then shaking a ton of baby powder into the main for a matte hair effect.

Lead nail technician Kim D'Amato of Priti Polish filed nails short and used Pretty Loves Matte polish.

What do we think? I'm disappointed by matte hair (matte anything other than lipstick and eye shadow tends to upset me), but the makeup look is pretty in its simplicity.
