Molly Sims Wears NARS Orgasm Illuminator
Friday, January 29, 2010

On January 27, Molly Sims attended the Unforgettable Evening event to benefit EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. NARS International Lead Stylist Uzo used the Orgasm Illuminator to give Molly a gorgeous lit-from-within glow.
"Molly best represents that Los Angeles 'girl next-door look'. The Orgasm Illuminator was the perfect product to keep her skin looking fresh and polished." says Uzo about Molly’s makeup. Aside from the new Orgasm Illuminator, Uzo used the below products to complete the look.
COMPLEXION:
NARS Barcelona Sheer Glow Foundation
NARS Orgasm Illuminator (on cheeks and forehead for added illumination)
Laguna Bronzer
Desire Blush
EYES:
Golden moss side of Camargue Duo Eyeshadow (NEW for Spring 2010!)
Golden champagne side of Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow
Kyoto Eyeliner Pencil
Goddess Soft Touch Shadow Pencil (inner corner of eye and underneath arch of brow)
Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara
LIPS:
Scarlett Empress Lipstick
Amazon Lipliner
I think her skin looks divine and I'm loving that red lip. We have similar coloring, so I'm going to try to do a Molly Sims 2.0 this weekend. What do you think of Molly's look?

Redken Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse

Guys. I know I'm so 2009, but I only JUST saw Avatar last night at the IMAX theater in Times Square. Like a tourist. That shit blew my mind! It's like, why would I even go SEE another movie if it's not 3-D, starring spicy Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and sci-fi to the max? A few observations:
1. Dudes in wheelchairs are the new black.
2. Why did no one TELL me that the MOVIE is about COMMUNICATING with your HAIR? I dream of communicating with my OWN hair.
So, naturally, I'm now working on a Hair Communications Strategy. I have a lot to say verbally, so I envision I'll have to work on my hair's volume if it is going to be my new sole medium of communication. That seems only reasonable. To get the most out of my strands, I'm amplifying it with Redken's new volumizer extraordinaire, Redken Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse. I was hesitant to try this initially, as cream and volume aren't usually related. But make no mistake, a small dollup yields height of Brigitte Bardot circa Moi Je Joue preportions! You do have to be careful not to use too much though, lest it get a bit oversaturated. A quarter-sized dollup'll do ya.
Redken Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse retails for $14 at salons nationwide.

Olaf Derlig, makeup artist worked with Marisa Tomei at The Sundance Film Festival this week. Said Olaf, "I had an amazing result using VOTRE VU today on Marisa Tomei. Getting Marisa ready right after she arrived from the airport going straight to her premiere it was very important to give her a nice fresh, glowey look and perfect skin appearance.
Using Wrinkle Eraser all over her face was magic, it worked wonders!!

New Revlon Photo Ready Foundation: Review and Photos

So my friend Elle (who's really my friend Lauren, who unofficially changed her name, much to everyone's--including my own--confusion) recently sent me this email:
From: Friedman, Lauren
To: Katz, Amber
Subject: New blog topic
Why my makeup never stays on past 9AM, a sonnet by Lauren Friedman.
Naturally, I advised her of my new favorite item, which lasts longer than this goddamn recession. It's the utterly and completely NOT overhyped Revlon PhotoReady Foundation ($14). It is THE FABULOUSNESS. Capital letters, italics and bold font are all necessary.
When I saw that my gal Annie mentioned it on Blogdorf Goodman and asked whether she "needs to get in [her] car and start hitting every drugstore in town," I was taken aback. And THEN, I watched Makeup Geek do a review of it as well. I was pretty sold by this point. I'm not snobby about drugstore makeup, but I confess that when it comes to drugstore FOUNDATION, well.... I usually go prestige for that. But, consider me glambivilant about nearly every high end foundation I've ever fallen in love with because compared to THIS $14 JEWEL, they're drek. You read that right. THIS Revlon foundation is the best I ever had, in the words of Drake. Check the full review.
Comparison: Revlon on the left, Make Up For Ever HD on the right. Stila Yumberry Crush on lips and cheeks.Revlon PhotoReady Foundation Review: To me, it's a comparable to a hybrid of Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (a holy grail item) and La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation SPF 15 ( a new favorite of mine. Stay tuned for a full review). It provides smooth, even coverage that's not too heavy and is superblendable. It has a bit of glow to it, without being shimmery. The texture is creamy and almost primer-like. Without BEING primer. Which I classify as totally bullshit, if you want to know the truth. I tried a press sample in Nude, which isn't quite my color, but is close enough that I'll probably burn through the entire bottle. And I rarely finish a bottle of foundation, lovies. Anywho, I'm constantly disappointed that things don't look and function the way I used to envision they would in the future. For example: Why don't we have flying cars yet? Why isn't everything the way it is in Back To The Future II? Why aren't our clothes more Balenciaga-esque on the WHOLE? Why haven't airlines changed their planes in YEARS? WHERE IS MY HOVERBOARD? Etc. But this foundation? Totally ahead of its time. Bravo, Revlon. You're ON it.
Anyway, in response to my suggestion, Lauren DID pen a sonnet:
There once was a girl named Elle
Each morning she'll rise
But it just doesn't stick very well.
"It not so tough, doll. Just rock some Revlon Photo Ready Foundation."
The End.
Do you love it? I'm working on the next one, which will be in iambic pentameter. Get excited.

Carol's Column: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

By Carol (my mother)
This is a tale of two mirrors, or rather, one pull-out mirror with two sides. One side is a magnifier, the other not. The magnifier, counter-intuitively, is the more pleasing one to view. It seems to enlarge areas of smoothness rather than flaws. Plus, it’s great for tweezing eyebrows and such.
The other I call the mirror of Dorian Gray. For those of you unfamiliar with Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, it’s a dark fable about a young man, obsessed with beauty, who, having made a pact with the devil, manages to remain forever handsome and youthful while his portrait receives the true marks of his aging and debauchery.
Without claiming any such attack on the visage in my looking-glass from anything so dramatic as debauchery, I nevertheless find that every mark of aging shows up with crystalline clarity in my “mirror of Dorian Gray.” It is the go-to mirror for any conceivable flaw that needs correction, and as such, is invaluable. After all, taking a page from the songbook of Frank Sinatra, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.” In fact, despite its not infrequent horrors, it tends to be my mirror of choice.
But we’re all so different. I know a WOACA* who is utterly convinced that she is gorgeous. (Trust me, this is far from the case.) Her own daughters roll their eyes and say that they will vie to inherit her mirror! And that begs the question, is it better to see oneself with rose-colored glasses or to see oneself in reality’s stark glare? In the first instance, one risks looking perfectly ridiculous and in the latter, one can easily succumb to deep depression.
I’ve made my choice, for now, at least. What about you?

Celebs at Sundance!
Monday, January 25, 2010
Though the general aesthetic of the Sundance Film Festival revolves around boots with the fur, jeans and puffy coats, the stars who frequented the Entertainment Weekly suite still managed to look put together. Natural makeup was the trend as it seems bordering on insanity to pile on pounds of makeup to complement your leggings and thermal get-up. Right? Here's a list of some of the celebrity highlights of the weekend:
Kate Mara

Credit: © Matt Carr/Getty Images
Kate Mara showed up rocking a sparkly hat, a maroon sweater, jeans and tall brown boots. She looked chic in a creamy neutral pink lip.
Amanda Peet

Credit: © Matt Carr/Getty Images
Amanda Peet looked natural with a bit of brow definition and light makeup. Said pregnant Peet, "OMG, I'm so excited right now, you don't even know!" after receiving her gift bag of L'Oreal.
Parker Posey

Parker Posey was wearing an ankle length plaid skirt and boasted a supercute crop with bangs. She joked that she wanted to take home the L'Oreal Paris-branded pillows that adorned the suite.
Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning embraced the sparkly hat trend and looked elegant with long, straight blonde locks and natural makeup with lotsa lashes.
Josh Radnor

This sighting changed up the situation from Sundance to Fundance. My crush on him doubled when I saw him drinking a coffee with adorably mussed hair.
Ben Affleck

Credit: © Mark Von Holden/WireImage
Having Ben Affleck in my "dance space" pretty much made my decade. Not to be dramatic, but it was actually in the top three moments of my life. The L'Oreal Paris gals and I discussed him ad nauseum the rest of the day.
Jonah Hill

Credit: © Matt Carr/Getty Images
Jonah Hill definitely brought the vibe of the suite up a notch. He was cracking jokes with his fellow castmates before heading up the stairs to his shoot.
James Franco

Credit: © Matt Carr/Getty Images
James Franco looked deliciously disheveled, as only he knows how. Said a fellow suite squatter, "I wouldn't mind rolling out of the other side of the bed he clearly just rolled out of." She has a point.
Dax Shephard

Dax Shephard asked to get powdered up at the L'Oreal Paris makeup station before his shoot. "Feel free to make my nose look smaller," Shephard quipped.

2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards: Drew Barrymore
While I didn't love Drew Barrymore's "mannequin lip" at the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards, I DID love her hair color. As luck would have it, a little gem came into my inbox from Redken today. Tracey Cunningham, Redken Creative Consultant for Color and Hollywood colorist, helped Drew Barrymore prepare for the season with Redken color. If you’re looking for Drew color, ask your colorist to highlight with Redken Up to 7 De-dusted Lightener and finish with Shades EQ 09V Platinum Ice to lock in color and shine.

Giveaway: Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Washes

I've long been a fan of Olay's body washes. Their Body Botanical Fusion is one of my staples. So. I have a pretty major birthday coming up this year in June (it begins with a "th" and ends with a "irty"), so my focus for 2010 is keeping my skin in good condition--both face and body. I'm stringent about moisturizing and exfoliating, and I'm happy to introduce anti-aging benefits in the cleansing phase as well with Olay's new shower gel iteration, their Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Washes. It comes in two versions, Exfoliate & Replenish and Deep Penetrating Moisture. Both smell fresh and I felt a real difference in my skin's condition pre-moisturizer. It felt smooth and soft and smelled divine.
Olay held a study and here are a few of the findings:
- If body skin is maintained well a woman can look up to 10 years younger.
- Body skin is just as important as facial skin for positive age perception.
- Skin care technology for anti-aging is proven to benefit body skin.
One lucky winner will win a year's supply of the two body washes! All the winner has to do is send me a quick review of it once they try it and I'll post it to my site. You can enter from now until tomorrow, January 26 at 5pm EST by commenting on this post. US residents only, please. Winner will be contacted on January 27.

Fresh Crème Ancienne Eye Cream: Monastery Chic

Don a robe and a rope belt, because monks are so hot right now.
Fresh, one of my favorite beauty brands, has introduced a new eye cream into their Crème Ancienne franchise, inspired by the WORLD'S first cream, created in the 2nd century to heal gladiators' wounds. Fresh co-founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg commissioned a monastery in in the Czech Republic to make their exclusive cream by HAND. Last year, ELLE's Holly Millea wrote an excellent article about her adventures visiting the monastery to meet the monks who make this legendary skin panacea. Check it out here to learn more about the process.
But let's get back to biz: The new Fresh Crème Ancienne Eye Cream ($95), lovies, is TO DIE. It's my new favorite and I'm pretty loyal to eye creams. It's super-nourishing. I put it on in the morning at 8am and by 11pm, it's still going strong. It mitigates dark circles and does as much for crows feet as you possibly can without involving yourself with a little something that begins with an "I" and ends with a "njectable."
This weekend, Jim and I had planned a day of shopping, all centered around the Monastery Chic theme, as I'd convinced him he needed to invest in Crème Ancienne Eye Cream on the DOUBLE. He tried one swipe and declared monasteries "the new Studio 54." I retorted that asceticism is the new black. The eye cream yields a subtle sheen not unlike my longtime fave Dr. Haushka's Eye Contour Day Cream. It's also just as splendid on lips as it is on eyes. A quick swipe will keep them hydrated for hours. Some of its ingredients include meadowfoam seed oil, beeswax (it IS some of your...) and jojoba seed oil. For the eye cream, they've added cold sugar-apple seed and rosemary leaf extract. The best part is that every single jar is pretty much limited-edition as exemplary production standards result in limited quantities remaining. So, get involved immed.
Try it and regardless of whether or not you're a pious gal (or guy)... you'll believe in miracles. You sexy thing.

Golden Globes 2010 Hair How-to: Anna Kendrick

I loved Anna Kendrick's undone wavy updo at the 2010 Golden Globes. I got the deets straight from stylist Stephanie Hobgood to find out how to recreate it.
The styling began with Anna's favorites from Davines, the LOVE Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner.
From there I liberally applied Davines For Wizards No. 3 Universal Mattering Mousse. This gave Anna's hair body and volume, but left it soft and shiny. It's made for medium hold and long-lasting control, so I knew she wouldn't have to worry about the style holding throughout the night.
After parting Anna's hair and pinning it up, leaving some loose tendrils in the front, I applied Davines For Wizards No. 1 Finest Oil Non Oil. It added a soft definition that helped eliminate the static effect and tamed the flyaways.
Lastly, I sprayed her hair with Davines For Wizards No. 9 Structuring Mist for medium hold and high shine.
Stephanie added, "Anna loves the smell of the product and her hair was covered in Davines! We had so much fun getting ready!"

2010: A Hair Odyssey

So, let's start this tale in true classic form, in medias res. I have undergone four color treatments since early December. There was a series of color situations not enjoyed by me, leaving me with nearly every possible hair color except the one I like to be, which is dark golden blonde with some lighter honey highlights. In the past month, I've been a platinum LA blonde, a redhead/strawberry blonde hybrid and a brunette. I've endured my true friends telling me, in not so many words, to "change that shit back immediately." (Thanks, Heather. You were RIGHT).
But then, I'd fall victim to my own version of Odysseus' Sirens. Odysseus WANTED to get back home to Ithaca and return to his dear Penelope. I, in turn, simply wanted to return to my normal Amber Hair Color, to be hereby referred to as AHC. But on my journey, I'd get these emails, enticing me with the Siren call of free color. I'd think, Oh! THIS person will just get me back to my regular shade. But no. Each time, I'd end up a new, unexpected color of the rainbow and each time, I'd be further and further from Ithaca (AHC--are you following?). Odysseus' fatal flaw was hubris; mine is hair vanity.
So anyway, late last week, I got word that I'd be heading to the Sundance Film Festival to live-blog for Daily Makeover, sponsored by L'Oreal. And mama is NOT going to Sundance to interact with the likes of Ben Affleck and other such spicy celebs as a brunette. No. That is NOT what is happening. So I booked an emergency appointment with my gal Jane at Hiro Haraguchi for some emergency back-to-blonde highlights. She stripped some of the red and brown out before embarking on some new highlights and lowlights. It was stressful, but she was truly the modern day equivalent of one of the Phaecians (mariners who listen to Odysseus' story and help him get home).
In the end, we're not TOTALLY at Ithaca (AHC)... but we're far closer. Penelope is within view. My hair is still a touch strawberry for my liking, but I'm relieved to feel a little more me. But: My hair is NOT happy with me. Can you imagine how it feels after enduring La Brasiliana and four color treatments in five weeks? So I employed a little secret weapon: Alterna Ten Masque for 20 minutes today and it nursed my ravaged strands back to health. You can actually feel it emulsify in-shower when you apply it to wet hair. I was able to comb through easily and quickly blow-dry it with no drama. Now, it does cost the earth ($55 for 5.01 oz). But there are times when you need to bust out the big guns--and clearly (CLEARLY) this was one of them.Keep it on hand the next time you find yourself on a hair odyssey. You won't be sorry.

Top Hair Trends At The 2010 Golden Globes
Monday, January 18, 2010
Red carpet beauty at last night's Golden Globes Awards did not disappoint with its bounty of structured updos, loose side 'dos with flowing tendrils, lush waves and hot hair accessories. Here, our favorite looks of the evening.
STRUCTURED UPDOS
Drew Barrymore

Credit: © Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic
Drew Barrymore's smooth, side-parted bun provided a toned-down, retro vibe in contrast with her ornate sea urchiny trimmed nude dress. Dewy, glowy skin enhanced by bronze adorned eyes and a creamy pink lip compliment her structured 'do. Her Grey Gardens character Little Edie would be proud of this starlet's very Hollywood moment.
Kate Hudson

© Steve Granitz/WireImage
Kate Hudson's Jetsons-esque gown initially wasn't my fave, but it grew on me as the night went on. However, there were NO questionable feelings when it came to her structured updo with its side swoop and volume at the crown. Violet shadowed lids, dramatic inner eye liner, extreme lashes and lacquered nude pout complete the look. Her bold bronze cheek evokes memories of mom Goldie Hawn as a spry young thing on Laugh In.
LOOSE UPDOS WITH FLOWING TENDRILS
Sandra Bullock

Credit: © Steve Granitz/WireImage
Sandra is stunning in a sultry side 'do punctuated by loose, flowing waves. A side-part and undone bends and waves add a hint of romance to the star's hairstyle. Blushed pink cheeks, shimmery purple shadow amped up with some heavy liner and a muted pink lip complete the look.
Anna Kendrick

Credit: © Steve Granitz/WireImage
This up-and-comer looks romantic and relaxed, reflecting none of her uptight Up In The Air character's idiosyncrasies. Her loose updo is toned down with flowy tendrils while a side-part adds polish. Anna's soft smoky gray eye and heavy liner and glossed pink lip bring a soft romantic vibe.
LUSH WAVES

Credit: © Jason Merritt/Getty Images
Christina's loose red waves and side part are a total beauty win. The peaches and cream complexion is something that Mad Men makeup artist Lana Horochowski is famous for and bombshell Christina Hendricks no doubt made her proud last night. Her red lip makes her look as if she should grace the packaging of a Benefit Cosmetics product--that's how pin-up this beauty story is.
Zoe Saldana

Credit: © Jason Merritt/Getty Images
This sci-fi stunner wowed the crowd in a burgundy ruffled number. But the look was "best supported" by Zoe's glossed-out side-parted curls that are soft and touchable. Her smoky mauve eye and lots of liner make her peepers pop while berry red blush and rosy pink gloss round out the look.
Julia Roberts

Credit: © Jason Merritt/Getty Images
Julia Roberts boasted a recent change of hue: Her signature red locks were lightened to a bold blonde and twisted into beachy waves. This Pretty Woman has the tousled look down pat. She paired her casually chic locks with a purple-shadowed, black-lined eye and neutral pink lips.
Amanda Seyfried

Credit: © Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images
Amanda Seyfried went for Old Hollywood glamour last night with long flowing waves and a deep side-part. A makeup palette in varying shades of rose and mauve round out this pretty look.
Jennifer Aniston

Credit:© Steve Granitz/WireImage
Yes, she knows what works and sticks with it (basic black and long side-parted 'dos), but this time around, Aniston kicked up the glam factor. Jennifer's voluminous highlighted waves are a bit bedroom, glammed up with a sweeping long side bang. Bronze cheeks and a caramel-nude pout make her the portrait of a California girl.
