The Cosmetics Company Store

Monday, November 30, 2009

The Cosmetics Company Store is the Estee Lauder brands outlet store and it's a fantabulous place to begin your holiday gift shopping. And let me tell you: It's the ONE THING I miss about my former life as a corporate finance drone (you can get in with your corporate ID if your company is one of the organizations allowed access) I used to allow myself a single visit per month, but two visits per month during the holidays. You know. When you have a problem, you need to RATION. By the same token, I won't interact with cosmetic counter sales associates directly, given my general lack of control when it comes to makeup. This come of course, after the Almost Had to Sell My Textbooks Act of 2000, after spending ludicrous amounts of cash at the YSL counter at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Copley, thanks to the uber fabulous sales associate (miss you, Charlie!).

Anyway. The Cosmetics Company Store carries the likes of Estee Lauder, Prescriptives, MAC, Origins, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Flirt!, and more brands at a beguiling discount. They sell lots of discontinued limited edition items at around a 30% discount, many of the GWP sets, some great perfume sets as well, and if you are lucky enough, brushes. That was always my fave Cosmetics Company Store purchase.

Oh, and lastly: Happy holidays from me and Beaker.

Love + Toast Sugar Grapefruit Hand Cream

Welcome to the Beauty Blogging Junkie 2009 Holiday Gift Guide! The first item is this glamazing hand cream. Behold:

It comes in several gorgeous colors and scents. Pictured above (clockwise, left to right) are: sugar grapefruit (my fave), honey coconut, mandarin tea and gin blossom.

To me, the packaging colors are so... Fiestaware! Sidestory: Do you know about this hilariously brightly-hued line of dishes? See pic at right of a selection of Fiestaware plates, courtesy of wikipedia. The line was created in 1936 and was popular until 1969, then experienced a resurgence in 1986, which we're still riding out. BTW, in A Christmas Story, the Parkers are seen eating on Fiestaware in the scene that precedes the arrival of the famed sexy leg lamp. I've always been mildly obsessed with Fiestaware and haven't invested in real non-IKEA plates yet for my stu-stu-studio because I secretly plan on purchasing some vintage Fiestaware at an antique sale or flea market somewhere. I LIVE for its sassy, unapologeticly bright hues, glossy finish and general retro glamour. You see, dolls, my cra obsessive tendencies know no bounds. They even extend to kitchenware.

Anyway, let's discuss the wonder that is Love+Toast Sugar Grapefruit Hand Cream. I used it before going to pick up take out from Maoz (my fave falafel place--I highly suggest you get involved) and wound up smelling my own hand whilst waiting in line like a complete freak. 'K? It smells of fairies and divinity with sparkling citrus notes without veering into sickly sweet territory. Candied grapefruit if you will, but subtly sophisticated. I don't like sickly sweet; I was raised in a no-sugar household. And it absorbs instantly and leaves no greasy, wet feel so you can go back to living your life (just a little more moisturized) in mere seconds.

Best of all, each piece within the line is reasonably priced. Hand creams go for $10, Lip Balms only $9 and Perfumes are $32. AND they're made with natural ingredients.

Love + Toast creator Margot Elena also the brains behind whimsical beauty brand Tokyomilk, some items from which will absolutely be included in my gift guide later this month. Stay tuned for that!

Lead Makeup Designer for New Moon Norma Hill-Patton Headlines the IMATS

Sunday, November 29, 2009

Remember I interviewed Norma Hill-Patton about her work as Lead Makeup Designer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon a couple weeks ago? Well, she recently spoke at the prestigious International Make-up Artist Trade Show in Toronto, where she recreated the look on models (see pic above) that she implemented for vampires Jane (played in the movie by Dakota Fanning) and Edward (played by the spicy Robert Pattinson) in New Moon.

Check out the theyrep blog for more details!

Nordstrom Private Beauty Event

Gals, over Thanksgiving I caught up with Daneen for a New Moon viewing (who says you can't watch TLaut three times and still enjoy it?) and she gave me some super inside scoop. Apparently Nordstrom iscurrently hosting a private beauty sale. It's not advertised on the main page of their website--but if you click this secret link, you can get yourself involved.

Gifts with purchase and special offers from brands like Anastasia, Armani, Dior, Essie, Guerlain, Jo Malone, Kate Somerville, Kiehl's, La Mer, Laura Mercier, NARS, Prada and many more await. Seems like an excellent way to stock up on some gifts on your list.

Don't forget to check out Spoiled Pretty for a code for free shipping.

Hearst is Doing it Digital with Realbeauty.com

Publishing giant Hearst has established themselves in the beauty space this month with the launch of beauty information site realbeauty.com. The site covers inner and outer beauty including hair, makeup, skin, body andmind, as well as diet and exercise, stress relief, sleeping and eating well. It runs the beauty and wellness gamut, you could say.

I especially love the site's "Beauty Book," an innovative toolbar offering customized beauty and wellness info, product recommendations and advice tailored to your specific needs. Very un-one size fits all.

But want to know my ultimate fave? The site's online workout videos. I've been into the site's Get a Better Butt Video to burn off my post-Thanksgiving gluttony.

Vintage BBJ: Thanksgiving Posts!

Hi, dolls!

I found myself starting to discuss how I LURVE Thanksgiving--it's my fave holiday--and I realized that BBJ regulars know the whole spiel by now. And if you don't, here it is. I'm like Rain Man about it: If everything is not EXACTLY the way it has been the first 29 years of my life. Thanksgiving MUST be at my parents' house. We must eat all the same food. I must do my very important job of cutting the Ocean Spray (it has to be Ocean Spray) jellied cranberry sauce onto the yellow plate that we use for it.

Let's take a little baby looksee at what I was doing in 2008, 2007 and 2006?

Last year, I was trying on Kate Walsh's hair via Daily Makeover's Virtual Makeover Studio.

In 2007, I was slathering up my face with festive pumpkin masks and quoting Carla Tate from The Other Sister.

In 2006, I was enjoying "festive little milks" and buying out TJ Maxx in the 'burbs.

What I've never mentioned is that each Thanksgiving, my brother and I choose a single show to watch several DVD seasons of, all in one sitting. It's TV gluttony and it goes so well with turkey.

Here's a run-down of the last 4 years:

2005: 24
2006: My So-Called Life
2007: Arrested Development
2008: Party of 5
2009: Battlestar Galactica (New to me! Can't WAIT!)

This year, I'm thankful for all of my fabulous, intelligent, beautiful readers and having the fortune to be able to make my avocation my vocation when I was offered my dream job at Daily Makeover! What are you doing over the holiday break? Tell me! Go. And happy Thanksgiving, dolls! xoxoxoxoxoxo

2009 American Music Awards: Alicia Keys' Makeup

Celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff created a colorful, dramatic look
for Alicia Keys at the 2009 American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. I was not obsessed with her dress, but I did love her blue shadow moment fluttering out from behind a fringe of lush lashes. Here are the deets, straight from Ashunta.

"Alicia's look was inspired by her hand-beaded gown which was various shades of blue. I focused on golden glowing skin, beautiful blue and burgundy eyes, soft pink shimmery cheeks, full lashes and light pink lips. The look was pretty, regal and sexy," said Sheriff.

Skin: Cover Girl Queen Collection Mineral Bronze in Light Bronze

Eyes:
Dior 5-Colour Palette in Mystic Jade. "This palette is made up of five beautiful shades of blue. I used the darker shade of blue first then applied the teal blue on top creating a radiant saphire shade that really made Alicia's eyes pop," said Sheriff.

Lips:
Mary Kay lip gloss in Pink Diamonds

Ted Gibson Styles Ashley Greene's Hair for The Late Show with David Letterman

After styling New Moon actress Ashley Greene’s hair for the movie premiere last week, Ted Gibson was at it again last night for Ashley’s appearance at the Ed Sullivan Theater for The Late Show with David Letterman. Instead of a trendy ponytail (right image), Ted cut Ashley’s hair to give her a sleek blow out with body and shine for her TV appearance and match her fashionable red, pinstripe suit.

Ted Gibson’s Styling Secrets for Ashley Greene’s look:

"I actually cut her hair from extra long to right below the shoulder. I used Hairsheet Styling mixed with Fix It gel by Ted Gibson to create this ultra chic modern look. Next up, Ted Gbson Flat Iron to make hair super straight. Added polish and shine with Tame It shine lotion by Ted Gibson to smooth flyaways then Beautiful Hold hairspray to hold in place but still achieve a moveable style."

All products available at Target stores and Target.com.

New Moon Photos and Review

Let's discuss New Moon, shall we? I should probably be embarrassed about the fact that I pretty much blew my allowance by seeing it twice this weekend. The first movie trip was on Friday night at 8pm (opening night) at Kips Bay with the flat-ironed, Tasti D Lite consuming, working-out at New York Sports Club cookie cutter Long Island born and bred masses. It wasn't ideal, but I find that theater is usually the best for opening day situations like these b/c you can line up super early and make sure you get a halfway decent seat. Then, I caught a Sunday matinee with my friend Lauren, who hadn't been able to make it on Friday. Anywho, here's my very non-Epert and Roper-esque review. WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

Let's all pause and appreciate Nikki Reed who plays Rosalie for her general non-albinoness, BELIEVABLE blonde hue and nonSpice Girl outfits (just some of her major offenses in Twilight) in New Moon. Her wardrobe and beauty choices have improved by LIGHTYEARS. What do you think? I still don't think she was an ideal choice for the role (Stephenie Meyer's been quoted as saying she envisioned Olivia Wilde playing the part, which makes far more sense), but her Rosalie authenticity improved by 65%. I measured.

I'm into the Volturi. I thought the whole ancient ancient vamps with a mafia vibe was interpreted well on the big screen. I especially enjoy Aro, played by Michael Sheen, and his bemused tone. Especially when says, "Fascinating!" in response to the Volturi's inability to affect Bella with their gifts. I laughed both times in the theater when he said this. His delight is just so... unparalleled, no? I find it hilarious.

Let's talk about Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner AKA Jailbait, as he was born in 1992. My gal Dina pointed out that Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner have much better on-screen chemistry, and I have to agree. I mean, how much shirtless Jacob was there in this movie? It's not even to be believed. I posit that Bella's feeling-up-of-shirtless-Jacob in her room (when he Spidermans in through the window) was improv slash involuntary. If those abs were within arm's length, I'd have to "see what's going on there," much like she did. And his TEETH. Have you EVER? I could write a SONNET about his mouth alone. And yes, I'm quite aware that he's like, 17. I'm totes cougaring out over him. A quote from my friend Lauren every time he rocked clothing: "Why is he wearing a SHIRT? I don't understand."

I thought overall, Bella, played by Kristen Stewart looked prettier than she did in Twilight. My one gripe is that her brows seemed a bit too skimpy. To me, it looked like a too-manicured interpretation of a well-executed wax. The idea was good. The shape was inspired. But too much brow was removed, leaving her face slightly unbalanced.

I'd recommend Bella invest in some Peter Thomas Roth Brows To Die For*. This fabulous serum, when swept onto brows nightly will ACTUALLY restore them to their former Brooke Shields (or at least Kristen Stewart) glory. I'm constantly complaining about my too-far-apart brows (they've always been like that my entire life--I have the OPPOSITE of a unibrow) forevs, and nightly applications of this miracle elixir has really stimulated brow growth. My brows are thicker, less sparse and elongated in a matter of a week. Get involved.

Alice (played by Ashley Greene) looked delicate and fairylike and quite Audrey Hepburn in Charade (which I'm sure was the goal, especially in Italy). I absolutely loved Ashley's portrayal of Alice's distaste for Jacob. "I'll come back. As soon as you put the dog out."

Jasper has removed his backbrace/lost his Edward Scissorhands tendencies. He didn't have much of a role in this flick, but I'm glad he decided to play it a little less awk.

Lastly, Edward played by the beauteous of colossal proportions Robert Pattinson. Remember last year when I said that when he talks, "his voice is to die. I die. Everyone dies. Even he dies and then returns as a vampire for all eternity because it's truly the love child of cashmere and velvet?" I've realized that it's his voice and seeing the planes of his face in motion that does it for me. I barely even give a rat's behind about him when he's two-dimensional in photos. Weird, right? I think, however, if I were to see him in person, I'd probably blow a gasket or something.

And finally, I absolutely love this slideshow by nymag.com about the 34 ways New Moon the movie is better than New Moon the book. Missed my review of Twilight last year? Click here to read it.

What did you think of the movie? Better than Twilight? Worse? Tell me your thoughts in the comments.
