Estee Lauder Partners With Michael Kors on Cosmetics Line

Friday, October 30, 2009

This just in from WWD:

Michael Kors has gone Hollywood — again.

The designer and “Project Runway” judge has collaborated on a Very Hollywood color cosmetics collection with the Estée Lauder brand that treads on the Tinseltown turf he mined for the Very Hollywood fragrance launched in September under the Aramis and Designer Fragrances division of the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. The color collection will hit Estée Lauder’s top 1,000 U.S. doors in January shortly before entering 3,000 international doors.
Deets on the two glamorous looks of the collection:

Bel Air Beige showcases a classic Michael Kors beige and coral palette of shimmery peach lips and cheeks and a smokey eye.

Rodeo Pink
spotlights new shades in vibrant raspberry tones of bright, bold lips and cheeks and a defined eye.
Both color palettes contain the essentials needed to achieve the Very Hollywood look of your choice and feature coordinating shades of Blush, Eyeshadow Duo, Eye Pencil, Lip Sheen SPF 15, Lip Gloss and Nail Lacquer.

Complementary Products

For added Hollywood glamour, the collection includes additional items for glowing skin and the perfect lips that can be worn with either look.

For Face

Estée Lauder Michael Kors Very Hollywood Shimmering Loose Powder

For Lips

The Estée Lauder Michael Kors Very Hollywood Lip Sheen SPF 15 and Lip Gloss in Hollywood Gold

Can that Michael Kors identify a pink or what? I'm so excited to get my hands on this color collection. What do you think? Oh! And check out my Jack Handy-esque deep thoughts on Michael Kors' Very Hollywood FRAG collection here.

Officially NOT Hyperbole: Blow's Perfect Shower Cap

Look. I don't know your life. But I can tell you that if you don't have the Blow Perfect Shower Cap*, you simply don't have the best get-that-water-away-from-my-'do shield ever created. After two weeks in the Promised Land, I've become as endearingly pushy as a true Israeli. Sidestory: Don't ever think about consulting with anyone in Israel about the best ways to get from one city to the other (i.e., bus vs. train) in the Land of Milk and Honey. You'll inevitably spark heated arguments which will end in your having to take the last person from whom you solicited advice's suggestion. BT dubs? My advice is the bus, after being propelled to try both modes of transport.

Anywhoodle. Much as cooks who know trust Crisco, curly girls who straighten on an every-other-day basis trust that H20 is essential for life, but absolutely inimical to maintaining a frizz-free lifestyle. Parenthetically, is that the longest run-on sentence ever written? It's Casual Grammar Friday, dolls.

So this shower cap boasts an oversized diameter with a snug, comfy fit and a 100% terry cloth liner which absolutely assassinates the remote possibility of wetness near your strands so your coif remains fly.

And that's all anyone can really ask for in this world where we live as people, right dolls?

Right.

Get the Blow Perfect Shower Cap here for $18.

Kiehl's Products Now At Equinox Fitness

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Not that I go to the gym or anything (I DONATE to the gym, people), but this inspires me to potentially direct my longterm relashe with NYSC to Equinox.

This fall, Kiehl's products will be found in Equinox locker rooms and as well as retail store locations! The locker room head-to-toe regimen includes:

Creme de Corps

Amino Acid Shampoo

Hair Conditioner and Grooming Aid Formula 133

Grapefruit Liquid Body Cleanser

A broader range of products will be available for purchase in ten Equinox retail shops. Products include: Abyssine Cream +, Ultra Facial Moisturizer, Lip Balm #1 and Ultimate Strength Hand Salve.

It takes two to make a thing go right, right dolls? And non-nameless/standard issue beauty products may just be the impetus I need to get my ass to the gym. What say you? Will this help you step it up in the fitness arena? Tell. Go.

Magical Mystery 'Cure: Zoya and Priti

Normally, I'd think that Zoya Polish in Casey ($7), a dusky purple-black hybrid would be the talon equivalent of bad idea jeans during a week that included camping, a hike in the driest, dustiest desert conditions, some beach days, and a jaunt to Ashkelon, which is sort of like the Jersey shore in Israel.

Dark polishes notoriously last five minutes on my tips, and I feared this lacquer would be no exception. Well, color me impressed, because I'm reporting over a week later with only one teeny tiny chip. I hereby declare my base coat/polish/top coat combo The Magical Mystery 'Cure. Sidenote: My quote in my class of 1998 yearbook was one from this very album. It's a line from The Beatles' I Am The Walrus: "Don't you think the joker laughs at you?" It's one of the few times in my life I felt I nailed something in high school. To me, that quote says it all.

Anywho. But the true unsung hero of this manicure is my Priti Organic Nail Polish Speed Dry 2-in-1 Top and Base Coat ($13). My nails were glossed to the max and positively vacuum sealed. And can you believe it's all natural? This shiz is created with SOY.

Try this mani combo, dolls. You won't be sorry.

It's waiting, dying, hoping to take you away.

The Making of a Minimalist: Camping Essentials

Oh hey, girls! I missed you. I'm back from the Land of Milk and Honey with lots and lots to share. Let me set the scene for you.

You are, say, a very high maintenance person about to spend 36 hours camping in the desert in Israel with your BFF and six Israelis who happen to be the most fabulous, accommodating, smart people of whom you've ever had the pleash of being in company. One of them, BT dubs, looks like this.

Okay? His name is Idan, but naturally, I referred to him (in my head) as Idanis the entire time. Let's not get into how he has the strength, speed, chivalrous tendencies and looks of a Cullen with the obvious advantage of not being fictional.

So you're going to be roughing it and have to bring only what you're able to carry ON YOUR BACK for a five-hour hike in the hottest, dryest conditions of your lifestyle. Oh, and you haven't worked out since like, 2007 other than running when you're late to various beauty product launches. The more you pack, the more you're going to have to carry up a steep as hell MOUNTAIN. And you really don't need to look extraneously high maintenance, which anything more than a lip balm will do. So here's what I brought:

Out of Africa Shea Butter Lip Balm in Orange Cream ($4)
This enormous balm (the better to thoroughly coat your lip area) doubles as an eye cream in a pinch. I used it as such the entire vaca to hydrate my eye area from the elements. You'll love the smooth glide of the shea butter almost as much as you'll love the creamsicle taste.

Stila Cherry Crush ($24)
The most versatile item ever. It makes my lips the best just-ate-a-popsicle-or-naturally-gorge? stain. It lasts forevs, as well.

Bare Escenturals Buxom Insider Liner ($14)
This creamy pencil glides on most velvetly for an enduring (through dirt, a spring swim and major schvitzing, it was still on at the end of the day) line.

And that's IT, dolls. I had dirt in my hair, and fakakta makeup by the end of the day on Saturday (we arrived on Friday evening), but it was so worth it. And miracle of miracles, my dark mani stayed perfectly intact somehow (in what world does THAT happen?). It's still going strong today, a full week after application. More info on that later in the week.

Twilight's Ashley Greene Gets Extensions

Ashley before

Ashley after

Ashley Greene boasts a pixie bob in The Twilight Saga as Alice Cullen. She stopped by LA-based salon Parlour on Sunday, October 25 for a nine-hour session (wow, that is commitment to the long cause.) to receive hair extensions, by stylist Essly Powell at Parlour on 3rd. I think Ashley looks gorge with the length, but I'm slightly disappointed she didn't keep her pixie 'do. She has the bone structure to pull off cropped cuts and the long waves are SO ubiqitous in Hollywood.
What say you?

New London Pharmacy

This pharmacy is IT, dolls.

When you're craving a little European luxury without the depressing exchange rate or bank-breaking flight, do as I do and head over to New London Pharmacy. The selection is impeccable to the point that you'd consider it curated. The store houses under-the-radar international jewels Lenor Greyl, Aesop, Marvis, Patyka, and so many others. Of course, they stock up on domestic faves as well, like Marilyn brushes, Moroccanoil and Bumble and bumble.

I urge you to go see the fantastical Wesley, who will assist you in finding the latest to die items. I also adore the pharmacy's new beauty director, Jessica. She is a wealth of beauty knowledge. Abby Fazio, the pharmacy's co-founder writes the store's online magazine, Behind The Counter.

I purchased some Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo* ($20) (no sulfates!) and Smoothies bobby pins* ($3) . The former infuses my heat-damaged locks with sulfate-free moisture and swathes it with argan oil (which my hair told me it loves). The latter are teeny tiny inch-and-a-half long bobbies: Perf for securing your tiny twists away from your mug.

New London Pharmacy is located at 246 Eighth Avenue in New York City.

Free People: Because Oppression is Bad

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

I seem to have a MAJOR problem involving two things: My non-existent shopping budget and the Free People boutique on 5th Avenue. Every weekend, I convince myself that my new job requires me to buy funner (shout-out to Elle Woods) weekday clothing, now that I've rid myself of my former corporate stuffy gig. And then I proceed to blow my entire "allowance" on sparkly, gorgeous things.

One thing in particular, however, proved to be a fantastic investment. I've rocked the Vintage Satin Dynasty Dress* ($108) like it's my goddamn JOB the past few weeks. I've worn it to work, backstage at Fashion Week, and on dates. It is my everything. It's a tad short to really rock on its own (though the model pictured above would say otherwise), but it pairs well with black leggings and my fierce OTK boots. Even better: I adore the name. And I wonder: Do you think they're referring to the fabulous Alexis Carrington Colby? Or the Ming, perhaps?

The Free People Vintage Satin Dynasty Dress is available at freepeople.com, Bloomingdales and free standing Free People boutiques.

Lancome Launches La Collection Lollipop

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Shalom from Israel, dolls!

I'm having a most excellent adventure Bill and Ted style on vaca here with my friend Lauren. We get whiplash approximately every 13 seconds from all the ridiculously handsome Israeli men. I've been beaching and drinking strange amounts of Nescafe and noshing on Greek salad. So, as you can imagine, there's been minimal time to blog, but rest assured, I'm checking my e's on the reg, and I just got word about some Lancôme news you can use.

So remember when I gave you the scoop about the new upcoming pink candy color Lancôme VP of Communications Kerry Diamond was rocking a few months ago? Well, I finally got the deets. Lancôme is working on a charity project with Lollipop Theater Network, a nonprofit organization that brings the magic of movies currently in theaters to children and teenagers hospitalized due to chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The brand has created La Collection Lollipop, three limited-edition gloss and nail polish gift sets to help raise money and awareness for Lollipop. As I mentioned in my previous post, Lancôme ambassador Anne Hathaway is a big supporter of Lollipop and it was actually she brought the organization to the brand's attention.

The gift sets, which contain a Color Fever Gloss and a Le Vernis nail polish, come in lollipop inspired, punchy shades like Mademoiselle Grape, Bon Bon Strawberry and Ma Cherie Cherry. I had admired the Bon Bon Strawberry shade on Kerry back in July, FYI. I NEED to get me some of that, stat. The illustrations that adorn each gift box were created by the children in the Lollipop program.

La Collection Lollipop is available exclusively at Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com.

The Perfect Almost-Red Gloss: L'Oreal Infallible Lip Gloss in Plumping Red

Friday, October 16, 2009

The other day my friend Lauren was at my apartment and was perusing my makeup selection, as folks tend to do when they come over. Some people have coffee table books and snacks; I have s-loads of makeups. Anywhoodle. So she remarked that I have an incredible selection of reds and know what? She's right.

Red lip accoutrements are my THING. I pride myself on having curated a fabulous collection of not-quite-true-red glosses and lipsticks. My type of red has to be a very specific shade: it's a watermelon red. Do you know what I mean? It's not exactly pink. No, dolls. It's a light red, rather. More red than pink, but on a scale of pink (1) to red (10), it's a 7.5.

L'Oreal has invented the Platonic ideal of watermelon reds, and they've called it Plumping Red*. It's part of their Infallible selection, which I love because they last forEVER (to be said in the voice of the kid from The Sandlot. At only $10, this liquid lipcolor will punch up any outfit with which you pair it. Get involved.

L'Oreal Infallible Lip Gloss in Plumping Red is available at drugstore.com.

Product Consistency Reincarnation

Thursday, October 15, 2009

I hate powder foundations, blushes and bronzers because I believe they age skin prematurely. We know this, because I discuss it incessantly. But I actually HATE the feeling--tactile-y--of powders. It makes me uneasy. I have a similar aversion to touching newspaper. Eye shadow is an exception because I apply it with a brush.

So I looked into it, and was able to hunt down some products which experience, all in seconds, the A Defending Your Life Past Lives Pavilion moment. Defending Your Life is a classic. So start using 48% of your brain and invest in these gems: They experience multiple lives as they go from a powder to a cream (and in Eye Light's case, back to a powder) in seconds. Or vice versa.

Lotion to Powder

The Body Shop Lemongrass Foot Powder Lotion1 ($21) is a sweetly scented lotion that transforms into a talc to keep your tootsies fabulously fresh. I lurve the lemongrass scent. It's crisp and refreshingly fruity.

Powder to Lotion

Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion2 ($23) I discussed this magical "brew" before in this post. Shake some into your hand, and the powder makes a Gregor of Kafka's The Metamorphosis fame shift into a thickening cream that will increase thickness by 17%.

Powder to Lotion Back to a Powder

Mally Liquid Eye Brightener3 ($25) Though a bit overpriced for such a small vial and not necessarily a concealer, I find it supplements concealer beautifully by yielding brightness that doesn't cake into lines. Its powder to liquid and then BACK to a powder formula is very Bill Nye the Science Guy when you break down the way it works. Tiny little pigments encapsulated in water instantly cools and evaporates product into skin for a hydrating effect. It's perf on the first half of the bridge of your nose (check out this vid from NYFW for more info), under eyes and under brow.

Very Transformers--more than meets the eye, no? What are your favorite multiple-life products?

In The New York Times!

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Guys, I'm kind of kvelling! Major, major, major NEWS! I'm quoted in tomorrow's New York Times (which is actually online tonight). Click here to read the piece. First of all, I'm over the moon to have been included. I think overall, the article was positive. I hope that "clogger" becomes part of the global lexicon. You know my major thrill in life is coining a phrase. My friends Nadine and Carolyn were also quoted, which I think is fantastic. Fashionista.com and beautysnob.com were also included in the article.

I'm not, however, happy with the caption under my picture, which reads: "Amber Katz welcomes the policing of bloggers." This is simply not true. First of all, it kind of makes me seem like a goody goody. And I can sort of BE a goody goody. But in this case, when asked about how I feel about the FTC regulations, my response included phrases like, "I think it's insane," and "It's way too extreme," and "It's a witchhunt," and "It's like shooting an ant with an AK 47." It seems when it came to the caption, The New York Times had a casual relationship with the truth. While it's certainly not slanderous, it simply doesn't reflect my opinion whatsoever. Do I think a byproduct of the regulation could serve to be a positive way to weed out/keep cloggers legit? Yes. But do I WELCOME it? No.

But other than that? I'm happy to be a part of all the news that's fit to print. In other news, I'm off to Israel for a 10-day vaca as of tomorrow night, dolls! I'm planning to do an encore presentation of the mountain makeup application, obv. Click here to see a video of the last one. I'm going with my friend Lauren and am much looking forward to catching up with friends, sitting on the beach in Tel Aviv and drinking Nescafes to my heart's content. I have a bunch of scheduled posts to keep you occupied while I'm away (and am bringing my laptop, so I may contribute some fresh content here and there), so you'll get your fill of BBJ even in my absence!

Lead stylist on the set of Sex and the City 2 Frank Barbosa dishes about how he keeps the four leading ladies looking fly.

You're Just Too Funky For Me.

It's a funny thing when you're finally let off the leash and are able to dress however you want during the week for the first time since 2002. Just to recap, for those who don't know, I worked at various and sundry corporate financial services firms for the past seven years (and one law firm. Same dress code). In August, I landed my dream gig as Daily Makeover's senior beauty editor. There are many side effects of my new vocation.

1. I am constantly enticed by own copy. I'm used to writing product reviews on this blog, which is surprisingly entirely different from writing fleshed-out beauty features. And when the person editing your features is the former beauty director of Cosmopolitan, and thus, one of the people responsible for my condition as an impressionable rabid teenaged magazine consumer, I find myself enchanted by things I myself am suggesting. When one of my sentences was edited to read "Plum eye shadow will make medium complexions sparkle," I ran, draft in hand, to the beauty closet shrieking that I needed plum shadow ON THE DOUBLE. Dolls, I don't even have a medium complexion.

2. This one's a bit more depressing. I've been declining samples of wild, bright or glittery beauty items for years, explaining that I couldn't wear them in my conservative work environment. But since switching from a weekday ambiance to a weekday GLAMBIANCE, I'm able to wear whatever cosmetic accoutrements I choose. In fact, IT'S MY JOB. But here's the thing: While I welcome things like mint green polish and bold purple matte lips with open arms, I can't really get on board with blue glittery liquid liner and yellow polish. As much as I love them on other people. I don't know if it's years of residual stuffiness I have yet to shake off (I only escaped my life as a corporette two months ago) or if it's actually just not that kind of party with me. It's weird. I wonder if maybe I really AM, in my heart of hearts, a little baby bit conservative. Or just too close to turning 30 (next June). The thing is, I DON'T KNOW. Because I haven't been allowed to express myself sartorially in years, I'm not even sure what I like.

So here are two items that I really do love... but just can't bring myself to rock. Whether my dress code inflicted conservatism is actually me or became me, I can't be sure. We'll have to discuss fashion nature vs. nurture in a separate post. I have to declare these items, in the sage words of George Michael, "just too funky for me."

Jemma Kid Makeup School Crushed Jewel Gel Liner in Lapis1

Prime example of something I love, but plum can't pull off. To be fair, the Topaz shade is more wearable for me. But Lapis, alas, is just too funky for me. Bright blue liner is having a moment (some 80s haters may call it a fauxment), but to go there, and go there with glitter is something I'm going to leave to teens.

Color Club Nail Polish in Solar Power2
I keep trying to be able to rock this polish like it ain't no thing, but it's a bit dark and bright for me to do it successfully. It's beautiful, but more suited to gals with darker complexions. For copy-paper white skinned me, it looks nauseating. Maybe NOT everybody wants a lover like that?
