BBJ Loves Jason Backe.

Friday, July 31, 2009

Dolls, I'm about to hop on board the not-so-chic New Jersey Transit to go to the Pleasantdale Chateau for Shelby's wedding. But first, I just wanted to give a shout-out to my MANE MAN Jason Backe. Yesterday, when I tweeted about how not pleased I was when an Ann Taylor clerk told me I resembled Portia de Rossi (she's very pretty, but her eyebrow hair contrast is STARK, and I'm pretty sure that's what the clerk was trying to tell me), Jason told me to come on in to the Ted Gibson Salon for a brow dye job, gloss and blow-out with the blow-out queen (and Jason's assistant) Jan Arteca, no appointment necessary. My hair looks freaking fly, and my hue seems to the general unassuming public to be the color I was born with. And for that, I have Jason to thank.

You're the best, doll!

xo,
Amber

New From NARS: Sheer Matte and Sheer Glow Foundation

My gal Julia, PR Director of NARS, told me these new foundations from the iconic brand are TO DIE. Here are the deets.

NARS Sheer Matte Foundation While transparent enough to allow skin’s natural hue to remain visible, it is still matte at heart, which means weightless, luster-free coverage. This velvety oil-free formula boosts brightness and radiance, improving skins texture. Packaged in a stylish frosted bottle, it distinguishes itself from its Sheer Glow counterpart.

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation An ideal solution for those looking for a foundation that is more dewy than Sheer Matte. The formula glides on easily and imparts a satin-soft, glowing finish. Skin will even out and gleam with overall brightness; sleek texture will be restored.
Choice of 20 shades. NARS Sheer Matte and Sheer Glow Foundations retail for $42 each and are available at Nordstrom starting August 1 and on narscosmetics.com starting September 1.

Get The Look: Amy Adams At The Julie & Julia Premiere

Molly R. Stern did Amy Adams' makeup for the Julie & Julia premiere last night. I love a good blogger story, don't you? Here are the deets on the look:

Says Molly, “It always seems that inspiration ends up coming from the dress. Last night Amy wore a gorgeous full length Carolina Herrera gown with a charcoal and white pattern speckled with gold beading. So I borrowed from that exquisite color palette.”

“We went for a steel and copper smoky lid, gorgeous full lashes, a peachy cheek and a golden amber lip,” Molly reports.

Face
"I first started by prepping her skin with a refreshing spray of Jurlique rose water balancing mist. And then moisturized her skin with La Mer's moisturizing lotion.
Next I based her skin sparingly with the new Cle de peau cream foundation. Then I warmed up her cheeks with the gorgeous new COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach."

Eyes
"For her eye, I based the lid with a combination of Shu Uemura's cream eye shadow in P taupe, and Vincent Longo's silky orange liquid eyeshadow.

Over that, I blended the new NARS shadows in Brumes.

Under her eye I smudged COVERGIRL Exact Eyelights Eyeliner in Radiant Sapphire in the outer corner and on the inner corner I dabbed a smidge of Shu Uemura pressed eye shadow in NME gold 350.

On her lashes I coated them with COVERGIRL Exact Eyelights Mascara in Black Sapphire."

Lips
"To finish off the look I tinted her lips with COVERGIRL Outlast Lipstain in Cinnamon Smile with a dab of YSL golden gloss over top."

Kumaara Radiant Finish Concealer

Kumaara Radiant Finish Concealer is one of my critical Day-to-Night Barbie makeup tricks I'm about to employ as today, I'm leaving work at 12:30pm to hustle to the train to New Jersey for my friend Shelby's (sister of my friend Amber) wedding.

This illuminating concealer complex involves light-reflecting particles to cover up your inner circle situation. Not an inner circle in a GOOD way, an inner circle meaning the inside corner of your eye where fatigue manifests itself in a most unbecoming manner. I like to combine it with my current concealer crush, Trish McEvoy Extra Coverage Concealer Duo ($28), which is fab for camouflaging all manner of facial flaws, but lacks the dewy consistency I crave. The Trish McEvoy/Kumaara hybrid is effective, but not dehydrating, and will ensure I look fly in photos.

We girls can do anything, right Barbie?

Kumaara Radiant Finish Concealer retails for $30 at kumaara.com.

ACUVUE Oasys Contact Lenses with Hydraclear Plus

ACUVUE Oasys contacts have changed my lifestyle. I'll get into how, exactly, but first: storytime: Until a couple weeks ago, I'd rocked the same contacts since I GOT contacts... in eighth grade. So like, since I was watching copious amounts of The State, rocking Aeropostale olive green thermal knit henleys, playing The Legend of Zelda and listening to Pearl Jam. Intense levels of brand loyalty. My former Focus 1-2 Week lenses were perfectly fine. But I didn't know how much more comfortable lenses could be until I tried out ACUVUE Oasys. Since I end up rocking my contacts until roughly... a million o'clock every night blogging and checking my always-full inbox, I actually require a lens that will re-wet itself throughout the day. Hydraclear Plus are more wettable and have a high oxygen transmission that you can actually feel when you're wearing them.

Also, I was in desperado need of a new prescription after an incident at work where I waved a hilarious wave (imagine a flirty, all fingers fluttering wave) to this dude I know at work only to realize (after being on the receiving end of his puzzled expression) that I'd waved to a STRANGER. It was NOT the dude I'm friends with. I figured that my prescription had changed for the worse in the last year or so and promptly scheduled an appointment with Dr. Susan Resnick, OD, who came highly recommended from my gal Sheara. Dr. Resnick is hilarious and a total doll. Not only did she not launch a campaign to convince me to undergo Lasik (the idea of someone scraping at my EYEBALL while I'm awake freaks me out) as all my other eye doctors have, she tested my eyes and discovered that my vision has actually IMPROVED a little baby bit. My nearsightedness is slightly less severe, hence my inability to see: my lenses were too STRONG. She prescribed me my new ACUVUE Oasys lenses and told me that I simply need to remember to rub them whilst cleaning to ensure they don't get protein deposits and even gave me a spare pair to leave with. I liked the way they fit my steep corneas (Dr. Resnick confirmed that I indeed have steep ones. Cra, right?)

Dr. Resnick is located at 30 East 60th Street New York, NY. Call 212-355-5145 to make an appointment with her. And, try ACUVUE Oasys with a free trial pair certificate and a $100 off rebate.

Channel A Look: Zooey Deschanel as Anita Miller in Almost Famous

There are so many beauty images burned into my subconscious, and Zooey Deschanel as stewardess Anita Miller Almost Famous is one of my absolute faves. I mean, what an exciting time that was to be a saucy stewardess. The 70s was IT. Anita's red and pink outfit is something I'd buy to wear as a person who lives in 2009. It's just so punchy. And if punch is wrong, I don't want to be right. And have you ever seen a better berry lip/cat eye liner combo? Obv, my coloring doesn't lend itself to this exact look (which I believe is achieved with a red lipstick and very black liquid liner), but I've discovered a version that works for the recessive-gened set (i.e., moi, the fairest of them all). To achieve it, you need:

Jemma Kidd Define Stay Put Eye Liner in Earth($24) David Horne, Director of Education at the Jemma Kidd Make Up School recommends accentuating the outer 2/3 when you apply this easily glidable eye liner to create the appearance of a wider set eye. Just wing out the ends and this super pigmented, rich liner will last all day. This luxe pencil is the caviar of eye liners. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but you'll want to shell out for GLIDE like this. You'll be "incendiary, too, man," with your sultry liner. TIP: I might be Captain Obvious-ing out right now, but I JUST discovered that a good sharpener is everything. I was using a pretty crappy (sorry, but it was) Diana Brill sharpener for like, months, not realizing that I should simply upgrade to a better sharpener that doesn't BREAK my liners. I've since switched to the Anastasia Eye Pencil Sharpener ($6) and my pencils are sharpening like a dream.

Philosophy Kiss Me Very Emollient SPF 20 Lip Balm Red ($14) I'll just SAY it: This is the kind of lip balm/gloss you want to keep TWO of in your purse. You know. Just in case you're at happy hour and cute dude comes strolling up and you can't root through the cavern of your purse fast enough, you'll have a better chance of getting to this hydrating, yet glossy sheer red tinted balm when you keep a couple on hand. It's even flavored with the slightest little baby hint of mint. Use it and "some day, you'll be cool."

Jemma Kidd Define Stay Put Eye Liner in Earth is sold at spacenk.com and Philosophy Kiss Me Very Emollient SPF 20 Lip Balm Red is sold at philosophy.com.

Get The Look: Scarlett Johansson at Comic-Con 2009

To achieve this wavy look for Scarlett Johansson's appearance at Comic-Con 2009, celebrity hairstylist David Babaii applied his Amplifying Whipped Mousse from roots to ends to give just the right amount of volume and hold to her strawberry blonde locks.

Next, he rough dried her hair by using his hands, moving the hair in various directions. Once dry, he sectioned her hair into 3 different parts: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. This is one of David's most important styling tips, since you need to have constant control over the hair at all times. To create his famous wavy curls, he used a 1 ½" sized FHI Heat Ceramic Curling Iron.

To style, he took small "V" shaped strands and wrapped them around the inside of the barrel. Then, David allowed each curl to fall naturally. Through selected strands, he ran his fingers up the partially curled strand to achieve added volume. For additional lift at the scalp area, he sprayed Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier on his fingertips and applied to the root area by roughly massaging into the area to maximize fullness and texture. To complete, he sprayed Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray.

Pretty sultry, no?

Beauty Sprinkles: Fage Against The Machine

Beauty Sprinkles is a natural mask that deposits a potent dose of vitamins and antioxidants to your skin, reviving luminosity and refreshing tired sallowness. There's just so much I'm into about this product. First of all, it comes with its own MERMAID mascot. I love a merm, have we discussed? My inner water nymph (who has SUPER long hair, if you must know) is so into it.

Also? It gives me something to do with my Fage yogurt, since my new fave facialist, Stalina at Haven Salon in SoHo, has me off dairy until my current acne situation calms down. I HIGHLY recommend Stalina, by the way. She eliminated my face of every single bit of bacteria and gunk and put me on a strict regimen which I'm following to the letter. I'm going to see her weekly for maintenance until my skin returns to normal.

Anyway, regarding the Fage, you simply stir the beauty sprinkles into a tablespoon of the yogurt on the shell dish it comes with. The scent is culinarily divine: Don't be alarmed when you feel as if you're smearing a breakfast on your face. Then, you allow it to dry, then wipe it off with a warm towel and reveal glowing, smooth skin.

Beauty Sprinkles Vitamin Cocktail Mask retails for $48 for a set of 8 packets.

Get The Look: Sienna Miller at the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Premiere in Tokyo

Last night, makeup artist Kate Lee used CHANEL cosmetics for star Sienna Miller at last night's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra premiere in Tokyo, Japan. Sienna wore a Gucci suit with her hair in a modern/ chignon type ponytail, so Kate decided to make the look more of a subtle version of Jerry Hall/ Helmut Newton by gently smoking out the eye with a mid grey matte shadow. Inside the eye, she used CHANEL Intense Eye Pencil in Graphite to add intensity, and the silvery grey reflects the light. "I wanted to balance the look without conflicting with her amazing suit," said Kate. On the lids, Kate used the grey shadow from the CHANEL Smoky Eyes Quad, with the CHANEL Eclat Lumiere in Beige Rosé as a base. On her lashes Kate applied several coats of Exceptionnel de CHANEL Mascara. She sculpted the cheek bones with CHANEL Powder Blush in Fresque. CHANEL Rouge Allure in Instinctive was then applied to lips.

Sienna looks pretty rockin', if I do say so myself. I'm not loving her outfit, but her makeup is SMOLDERING. What do you think?

Wonderbar Facial Bar

Wonderbar ($40), wonder of wonders, is skin care that's actually good for ALL skin types.

I know what you're thinking: One size fits all is nice in theory, but rarely works in practice. Yes, it worked in highly fictional The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Also, Michael Stars' line of wearable wonders come in one solitary size, right? Well, Wonderbar is also riding the Michael Stars/Sisterhood train: It really IS a one-size-fits-all skins soap.

The unassuming bar includes ingredients like Heilmoor, a 3,000-year-old Austrian clay formed from decaying underground plant matter known for its detoxifying and soothing properties and Chlorey’nahre, a made-up-sounding algae derivative that moisturizes and encourages cell rejuvenation. Both help tighten pores, deep cleanse, eliminate eczema and acne and even lighten hyperpigmentation.

I heart it, even though I usually analogize getting involved with a facial bar as opposed to a face WASH housed in a bottle to falling in love with a dude who's not a Jew (not the goal, but you sometimes you just gotta go with the flow).

Wonderbar is available at wonderbarusa.com.

Madonna's Wears Shu Uemura On Her Sticky & Sweet Tour

Shu Uemura’s artistic director Gina Brooke’s latest creation of custom diamond eye shadow as part of Madonna’s new look for her Sticky & Sweet 2009 summer tour.

Inspired by Madonna’s hit song (and iconic look in the video) Ray of Light, Brooke, who has been working with Madonna since 2002, transforms Madonna’s eyes nightly by applying a mixture of crushed, small flawless diamonds and white eye shadow to her lids. That's right, DIAMONDS. Like a facial version ofTwilight's Edward Cullen. “The resulting brightness and glow from Madonna’s eyes captivate the audience and reinforces the fact that there are always new possibilities with make up – and no rules,” commented Brooke.

To create this sparkling and bright look, Brooke adds shu uemura’s ME White 906 Pressed Eye to provide a soft, gorgeous light-reflecting, diamond-like effect. Brooke feels that any woman of any age can wear a shimmery, ethereal shade like ME White 906. A little sheen helps enhance the eyes and gives an instantly younger appearance. Madonna is always up for trying new things and I think all women should feel comfortable experimenting and enhancing their beauty – on stage or off,” stated Brooke.

Illamasqua Stateside Launch

By Liz Shayala

Guess what alter ego? It’s your time to shine!

Over the course of my twentysomething years I’ve fallen in love with many beauty products, but I can truthfully say I never felt this before: ILLAMASQUA has made its way onto my face and into my heart - leaving me completely and shamelessly devoted…and yes, maybe a little bit obsessed.

This U.K. “professional night-time makeup” brand exploded onto the beauty scene just nine months ago and in that short time has amassed a cult-like following. With visionary makeup artist, Alex Box as artistic director it comes as no surprise that this brand is cutting, edgy and downright provocative.

But it’s the vision that ILLAMASQUA was created on that makes it such a powerful brand. ILLAMASQUA is “Make-up for your alter-ego”, advocating alternative lifestyles and promoting self-expression through make-up.

And if the imagery and attitude are the hook and the line, their glorious 200+ show-stopping products are definitely the sinker.

My current ILLAMASQUA LUSTS:

Liquid Metal
in Enrapture (highlighting cream in metallic copper) $24-

Intense Lip gloss
in Mistress (bright coral orange) $19

Nail Varnish in Milf (vintage mint green) $14

Thankfully, on July 31, ILLAMASQUE ‘s “emo-mazing” products will be sold for the first time in the US, starting at the Sephora in Times Square, followed by 26 other Sephoras across the US by the end of October.
