Get the Look: Alicia Keys at the BET Awards

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

At the 2009 BET Awards, celebrity makeup artistA shunta Sheriff created a Moroccan-inspired look for Alicia Keys based on her recent trip for the Mawaline Festival. Ashunta gave Alicia flawless skin and coral lips reminiscent of a Moroccan Paradise.

Ashunta prepped Alicia’s skin with Laura Mercier Mineral Primer ($30), a superfine, lightweight and translucent powder that primes the skin prior to foundation application for an even, mistake-proof surface.

Alicia’s coral pout was created using BeingTRUE Satin Lip Shine in Luscious ($22), a dazzling coral. Created to coat with a glistening satin finish for color and depth, this gloss contains an infusion of peppermint oil, caffeine and exotic antioxidants to accentuate the natural fullness of lips and hydrate, while helping to decrease fine lines

A New Kind of Seven Minutes in Heaven: Orlane Absolute Radiance Lightbox

On LOST, creepy, nefarious Ben talks about a metaphorical magical box, one from which anything you dream will emerge. Said Ben to John Locke, "Let me put it so you'll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you John? What if I told you that, somewhere on this island, there is a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it when you opened that box, there it would be? What would you say about that, John?"

My own (um, vain) dreams are pretty much limited to perfect skin and for that reason, I'm here to tell YOU that the Orlane Absolute Radiance Lightbox ($200) is my LOST-inspired not-so-metaphorical magic box. Now, I wanted not to love it. It's $200 for SIX applications. It would be yet another expensive beauty habit in my lifestyle. But that's not the case, dolls. It's just not. Its steep price does push it into Luxe Capacitor territory. But it's so, so, worth it.

The Orlane Absolute Radiance Lightbox contains Absolute Radiance Dazzling Eye Ritual, which consists of Eye Contour Serum & Under-Eye Patches; Shimmering Skin Masque + Cream and Absolute Radiance Evanescent Cream. There are six full applications within the Lightbox. I recommend taking everything out of the box, so you can see what you're dealing with. Then, set it up in order of use.

The Eye Contour Serum & Under-Eye Patches are amazing. Somehow, seven minutes using these yields the same effect as ten hours of sleep and a lazy afternoon of watching hours of The Golden Girls.

Next, mix the Shimmering Skin Masque + Cream and apply for about five minutes. It has a tingling effect, but not in a Samantha-post-chemical-peel-in-SATC way. More like a you-feel-it-seriously-working good way. You know?

Then, you rinse it off, and remove the under-eye patches and apply the Absolute Radiance Evanescent Cream, which oxygenates and detoxifies. Post-application, I defy you to stop feeling up your face for five seconds.

The results are PHENOM. My skin looks younger than Abigail Breslin's, dark circles are diminished, and my overall complexion is simply brighter. This newfound luminescence lasted a full 24 hours, as well. I HIGHLY recommend it for weddings, mage interviews, and high school reunions. Basically, any time you want to show up with skin that looks younger than a fetus's. Mmkay?

Essie's New Matte About You

Essie's new topcoat Matte About You ($10) adds a smooth matte finish and provides new dimension and texture to any Essie nail color. The exclusive, advanced formula instantly transforms any polish from high gloss to matte in seconds.

“A matte finish is very fashion-forward,” explains Essie Weingarten, founder and president of Essie Cosmetics. “We developed Matte About You so you can still wear the colors you love – classics and hot-right-now – but with a striking matte finish. A totally unique approach to wearing color.”

Matte About You Matte Finisher will be available beginning August 2009 at www.essie.com and fine spas, salons and beauty destinations nationwide. Contains no formaldehyde, no toluene and no DBP.

As a high gloss gal, I won't be availing myself of this innovation, but I'm interested to see how it's received by the beauty public. I think it makes much more sense that Essie has created a way to simply "add" a matte finish to your glossy polishes, rather than create a line of matte colors. What do you think? Are you mad about matte? Will you be pairing it with your Havaiana flip flops this été? Tell me in the comments!

It's Not In His Kiss, It's In His Brows.

So, Daneen's post about Robert Pattinson's hair being the key to his hotness got me thinking about the number one thing that attracts me to a dude. Obviously, hair is vitally important. Hair, in general, is my everything. We know this. But for me, even more than the follicles atop a man's head, it's his eyebrows I find alluring. I love a dude with good brows. To me, there's something retro about it. In the time when men were men and women were women (I've started countless sentences with this phrase), nearly ALL men had brows that commanded a presence. It's far less common nowadays. Now, obviously, it's a fine line. So, on a scale of hot to Peter Gallagher, the dudes pictured below all fall in the hot bucket.

Here's my highly scientific top ten list of brow hotness. Brace yourself.

#1 Robert Pattinson

#2 James Dean

#3 Colin Farrell

#4 Ryan Reynolds

#5 Brody Jenner

#6 James Franco
#7 Joey McIntyre (Joey has even answered in interviews that he believes the reason girls love him is his eyebrows.)

#8 Zac Efron (Yes, he's what I've termed "efreminate." But isn't at least a portion of his prettiness attributed to his brows? )

#9 Marlon Brando

#10 Ed Westwick

What do you think? Do you agree that a man's appeal is in his brows? I'd also posit that in certain cases (albeit far fewer than eyebrow-induced hotness), it's a dude's jawline/mouth combo. Exhibit A: Ben Affleck. Tell me your hotness rubrics in the comments. Go.

Giveaway: Win a Sneak Peek of Lumene Excellent Future Deep Repairing Cream and Serum

Monday, June 29, 2009

Gals, I recently had the opportunity to get a sneak peek of Lumene's new Excellent Future suite of anti-aging skin care products. Lumene Excellent Future Deep Repairing Cream and Deep Repairing Serum will be available at CVS and Ulta stores beginning the week of July 6th.

In my trial of both products, I found the "glide" of application to be impressive for drugstore skin care (it's only $30 per product!). It absorbs really quickly into skin and provided a lasting barrier of moisture. It's not the best fit for my still-in-my 20s slightly oily skin, but I'll definitely use this in small quantities in the winter and will absolutely be recommending that Carol avail herself of some, as well.

Some more deets on the products: Lumene's new line fuses nature and technology to create products that protect, repair and delay the signs of aging in skin. Lumene combined apple stem cell extract and Arctic white peat called Applexcell™. Apple stem cell extract works to protect skin stem cells that are depleted as we age while Arctic white peat provides an optimal hydration level for the apple stem cell extract and skin stem cells to work in tandem.

The best part? This stuff really works—an incredible 100% of women saw a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles in a clinical study. Similar plant stem cell technology is available in select prestige skincare products that retail for over $150, but Lumene is the first brand to bring stem cell technology to the mass market, making Excellent Future products available to all women for just $30.

And guess what? I've partnered with Lumene to offer five of you the opportunity to win a set for your very own to try out (and provide feedback for) before it hits shelves. Just enter below before noon EDT on Friday, July 3rd (U.S. residents only, please) and check this post at 5pm on that same day to see the five winners' names revealed. Once the five winners receive their beauty booty, they'll have a week to try the product and report back the results to me by commenting on this post. Good luck!

Britney Spears Goes Brunette

I just checked the Allure Daily Beauty Reporter Blog and found out that Britney Spears recently premiered new darker locks in LA. While I like her new brown hair (she can pull off many hair hues), I do maintain that Tobias Fünke would like his cut-offs back. Let me just state for the record: I HATE shorts.

That's all.

What do you think of Brit's hair?

How to Get a [Cellulite-free] Butt Like Kim Kardashian's

One of the many beauty questions on my list is "How can I get a butt like Kim Kardashian's?" While working out (instead of donating to the gym, which, BTW, I can see from my window of my apartment) might be step 1, I just received the answer to a second Kim-related beauty question in my inbox. How is she keeping cellulite out of her lifestyle? Kim recently confessed on the cover of a national magazine that she, like millions of women across the country, has the nasty stuff. And although she loves her curves, Kim admits, "cellulite is not cute," so she decided to take care of business.

Kim enrolled in the NIVEA Good-bye Cellulite, Hello Bikini Challenge, a four-week, holistic program that combines fitness, nutrition, style and skincare with NIVEA Good-bye Cellulite Gel-Cream and Patches to help women visibly reduce the appearance of cellulite and feel better in their bikinis. I tried out the patch myself and was pleased with the results. Click here to read about my experience with it.

Space.NK.apothecary’s Fab Fall Additions

By Liz Shayala
Last week, I had the opportunity to go to the elite beauty mecca, Space.NK.apothecary to learn all about their upcoming fall products. From the luxe exclusive Sonia Kashuk Brush sets to the amazingly sweet and delicious MOR Lip glosses, Space.NK. has everything a beauty buff could ever dream of.

Space.NK owner and founder Nicky Kinnaird was there to showcase her new line, LIFE, which offers effective beauty solutions for everyday use, including candles, body lotions, shower gels and much more. My fave was the Ultimate Unwind Bath and Shower Gel ($22), scented with a Patchouli suede blend (while I was trying to figure out how to put into words exactly how it smelled I ran across urban dictionary.com’s definition: Patchouli- Hippie perfume…smells like forest…and snuggling. I have to say that’s pretty much RIGHT ON!).

For the fall, Space.NK will also be carrying their first ever DIY at-home hair color kits created by celebrity hair colorist, Kelly Van Gough. Nicky vows this is the only at DIY hair color system that she would ever trust (she actually dyed her own hair and loved it!). Space.NK will also carry Kelly Van Gough’s Heads Up! Couture Highlighting Kit ($49), though Nicky warns “less is always more when it comes to home highlights!”

Nicky also introduced us to my newest obsession; Rococo Nail Apparel ($16), which is a mega popular UK brand that is being sold in the US for the first time exclusively through Space.NK. This nail lacquer is ridic--so many colors and a flat brush for easy application (my toes are currently looking gorge in Brocade).

Just an FYI for you trend lovers: Nicky predicts that the hottest fall nail colors will be gun metals and neutral metallics. Expect to see my nails wearing Rococo’s Metal Jacket color come September!

Sabon's New Organic Line

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Beauty writers tend to have favorite beauty shopping spots in their city of residence, and Sabon makes my top five list. Their natural products have a 100% success rate with me (those I've tried have always wowed me), their soaps are freshly cut and smell divine, and the staff is always extraordinarily friendly.

No strangers to natural products, Sabon recently made its foray into organics. The line is paraben-free, sulfate-free and not tested on animals. The products are comprised of various plant extracts from the Swiss Alps and is ECOCERT-approved by an international organization that examines organic cosmetics.

The line includes:
Organic Body Scrub ($39)

My favorite item within this suite of products is their salt-based Organic Body Scrub (pictured above, $30). Among its natural ingredients are organic olive oil and Dead Sea minerals. Slough a small handful onto flaky/peeling skin and smooth, hydrated skin will soon be restored into your lifestyle. Just. Like. That. The Dead Sea is kind of magical, dolls. I went to Israel in 2007 and took a dip in it and my Queen Helene-induced bout of eczema was entirely eradicated post-float.

Also, If you haven't already seen it, check this video of yours truly applying "makeup" (dirt) from a crater in the middle of Israel's desert. It's pretty classic.

Shalom,
Amber

New From Bobbi Brown: Nudes Collection

Saturday, June 27, 2009

The queen of neutrals has returned to her roots with this collection of nudes. I love that every time I see the name of this collection, it somehow reminds me of Arrested Development's Tobias Fünke and how he suffered from never-nude syndrome.

“Nude makeup doesn’t mean monochromatic, barely-there makeup. It means makeup that’s right for your skin,” says Bobbi who has created a new, limited-edition eye palette for fall.

The Nude Eye Palette ($60) features eye shadow duos in a universally flattering selection of shades and textures. The eye shadow duos come in their customizable 3 Pan Palette, which can be filled with your choice of any Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow or Blush shades.

Bobbi also introduces a new shade to her iconic Shimmer Brick collection- the Nude Shimmer Brick ($40). Featuring five pure pearl pigments in pink, gold, bronze, beige, and caramel, the shades are designed to be blended together to give all skin tones a soft nude, lit-from-within glow.

The Nudes Collection also includes Caviar Ink Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner ($21) Bobbi's best-selling liner now in a rich, deep brown shade, and four new shades of Bobbi’s popular Creamy Lip Color ($22) that compliment the Nude Eye Palette and Nude Shimmer Brick.

All will be available from www.bobbibrown.com and Bobbi Brown counters July 2009.

Become An ELLE Video Star!

Friday, June 26, 2009

Video may have killed the radio star, but it may do just the opposite for budding vloggers! ELLE is giving you the opportunity to propel yourself into a life of fame with the magazine's new Video Star site at www.videostar.elle.com. As you know, ELLE's smart, timely beauty coverage is one of my monthly necessities. ELLE Beauty Director Emily Dougherty (one of the nicest people I've met in the beauty biz) impresses me each month with her story ideas (I love last year's tribute to superheros) and beauty product selection and the spreads are always TO DIE. Emily also has a healthy appreciation for LOST. And as you know, there's nothing wrong with that. Anyway. ELLE's foray into beauty how-to videos (which I checked out this weekend) is sure to teach you a thing or two. I recommend the How to Erase Dark Circles video.

More deets about Video Star:

The newly-launched site is an online community for makeup artists, both amateur and professional, to share their videos. Do you know the secret to getting the thickest, longest lashes or concealing those dark circles? Are you a pro at creating Megan Fox’s full, glossy curls? Whatever your beauty specialty, they want to see. And as your reward for showing off, you’ll have the chance to win big.

Each week, ELLE will declare a new Video Star and award $250 worth of beauty goodies to the winner. Plus, because video stardom is based on the highest number of views, you can win again and again. Bonus: Video Star favorites will get their faces and tips in the pages of ELLE magazine, with the most popular personality of the year winning $3000 in products.

Upload your videos here.

Farewell, Farrah & New Items From LORAC

I don't know what's worse: The fact that we now live in a world without two entertainment icons, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson or the fact that we had to deal with the loss of both in the same DAY. I apologize for the delay in my Farrah tribute. She was truly a pop culture follicular icon, whose feathered 'do launched thousands of haircuts. I mean, just LOOK at that mane. Jim even has a super-retro bottle of her infamous cream rinse. Farrah's mark on the beauty industry is not limited to her fantabulous hair, however. She was one of makeup artist and founder of LORAC cosmetics Carol Shaw's beloved clients, and Carol even named one of her bestselling lipsticks after the pin-up.

LORAC Cream Lipstick in Babydoll ($19)
This lipstick was originally named Farrah, as Carol had created the color specifically for her when a fave shade of hers had been discontinued. The pale salmon pink is evocative of Chrissy Snow-short shorts, feathered hair, and '70s glamour. Its formula is smooth, hydrating and uber creamy. A few years ago, the shade was renamed. But since Farrah's untimely passing yesterday, I've been wearing it as a tribute to my fave Angel.

Here's what's new for summer 2009 from LORAC:

LORAC Summer of Style Collection ($40, a $100 dollar value!!)
This makeup collection is a stunning value and comes in a cute gold bag. It contains:
Starry-Eyed Baked Eye Shadow Trio in Star Style
Publicity Stunt Lashes in Black
(This mascara rocks the funk. On, its tube formula looks like faux lashes and it stays on forevs. Carol recommends removal via a warm washcloth to loosen the tubes, before you wash your face)
Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick in Haute
Mini TANtalizer Baked Bronzer

TANtalizer Baked Matte Satin Bronzer SPF 15 ($30)
Powder bronzers aren't my fave, but this one boasts an impressive finish AND the anti-aging benefits of SPF 15. It yields a non-muddy, believable tan hue. I'm into mixing a bit with my lotion to add some color to my ghostly-pale legs (thank you, never-ending rain).

LORAC Baked Matte Satin Eye Shadow in Posh ($22) LORAC's silky-smooth formula is worth getting involved with, dolls. I'm impressed with its high-pigment color payoff.

LORAC Baked Matte Satin Eye Shadow in Insider ($22)

LORAC Baked Matte Satin Blush in Velvet Rope ($24) LORAC's new blush iteration is a silky, non-shimmery moisturizing hint of color.

LORAC Baked Matte Satin Blush in Hollywood ($24)

If you're not readily famil with LORAC products, I suggest you get famil IMMED. Her formulas are unbelievably user-friendly, blend like a dream, and last far longer than a Charlie's Angels episode. I even had the opportunity to hang out with the hilarious Carol Shaw herself last summer in line for the Sephora 10th Anniversary party, where she kept me entertained while we shvitzed.

P.S. Sydne, in addition to her phenom MJ trib, did a similar fashion-focused vigil for Farrah. Check it here.

Dashing Diva's New Slim Diva Mani Pedi

June 27-August 31, Dashing Diva salons will feature its new Slim Diva Pedicure or Manicure at any of the 12 Dashing Diva nail spas in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island. I love DD's commitment to theme mani/pedis, don't you? I enjoyed the Slim Diva mani yesterday, and while I'm not sure my arms were slimmer post-service, I did love the intensive massage and the mixture of orange and peppermint oils used. The best part? It even comes with a yum yum yum orange cocktail. Per ush, my manicure is glossy and my polish choice of Social Climbing, a light, subtle pink is the perf color for summer (even if it looks more like October outside).

The Slim Diva manicure or pedicure is a citrus infused service that uses a squeezing massage technique with citrus aroma oil to help break down cellulite and relieve muscle tension.

First, feet or hands are soaked in warm water with lemon slices, then the Slim Diva message, finished with cuticle care and a polish from the Manhattan Collection.

Price:
Slim Diva Manicure & Pedicure is $68
Slim Diva Pedicure alone is $48

Prices may vary per location.

Moonwalk Over to Sephora to Score Some Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Such a sad news day, right my PYTs? Let's have a mome of silence for Michael Jackson. His untimely death negates his own declaration, "don't stop till you get enough." There are so, so many classic Michael songs that inspire even me, a dancer only when inebriated, to bust a move fully sober. My friends Max and Jordan both know to put on MJ's greatest hits when I arrive at their parties. Because it's just not a party until you Wanna Be Starting Something. The King of Pop influenced everyone from Chris Brown to Britney Spears and changed music as we knew it. His talent will live on in our memories. I can't even rock white socks with black shoes without thinking of him. I'm getting to a Michael-inspired beauty rec, stay with me.
Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 ($23)
In its tube, does its hue not resemble MJ's EPIC red leather jacket circa Thriller? One slick with this stick of genius and your lips will be left hydrated and smooth (criminal). I love that it yields subtle, buildable color. Three coats produce a medium berry flush, two are a wash of rose, one is a sheer, barely noticeable tint. AND it tastes and feels just like the phenom original formula. It's a new beauty insider exclusive at Sephora. Get it while its hot.

Rock it, and people will in turn, want to Rock With You (alllll night!)

RIP, Michael.

P.S. Check out my gal Sydne Summer's fashion-focused tribute to Michael at Think Thru Fashion.

Mad Men Makeup: BBJ Interviews Lana Horochowski, Head Makeup Artist for Mad Men

Lana!

This is a treat beyond the beyond, dolls. Head makeup artist for the critically acclaimed Mad Men (one of my top 3 fave shows) Lana Horochowski granted yours truly an interview about how she creates the devastatingly gorgeous looks in the show's glamorous 1960s universe. Lana spent 45 minutes with me on the phone discussing all things Mad Men so I could deliver the deets to you.

Even better? She's agreed to answer some of YOUR questions! Send me your questions to beautybloggingjunkie [at]gmail[dot]com with subject line "Mad Men Makeup Question" and I'll feature her answers to four of them. I'll post them between mid-July and the week of the August 16th Season 3 premiere. I'll feature a different question that she'll answer each week. Sound fun? I think so! Prepare your burning questions for Lana while you read Lana's answers to my own, below. Pour yourself a stiff drink (make sure the ice cubes clink around in the glass, a la Betty Draper), relax, and learn how to achieve a Joan Holloway-worthy red lip.

Beauty Blogging Junkie: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Lana Horochowski: I'm from Texas, and growing up, my mom was a very Texas mom. She'd be like, "Are you gonna put lipstick on?" even when I was little. But I secretly loved it. I also was an ice skater and used to do the makeup for my fellow skaters before we'd perform. After college, I moved to Los Angeles to work in production. Because I spent so much time matching makeup to clothes, I learned a lot about the process. I eventually started doing work for free as a makeup artist. Then, I got my first big break: a Hallmark Movie of the Week. That led to my joining the union and networking.

BBJ: What is most exciting about working on Mad Men?
LH: In that time period, it was all about glamour, style and fashion for women. It's so different from our modern day aesthetic which skews more natural. Back then, it was all about major lashes, and dramatic red lips. We do tons of research on the the makeup for that era. We comb old VOGUEs, other vintage magazines and 1960s advertisements to find looks that are authentic.

BBJ: What is most challenging about working on Mad Men?
LH: Most challenging is the process of finding modern day cosmetics in vintage colors, and, just as importantly, textures that will be believable for our Mad Men world. There are so many colors used then that are so rarely used now [Ed. note: I know JUST what she means! Check this post in which I discuss out-of-circulation colors]. And, even if we find something in the perfect shade, it may be the wrong texture. So often, great colors wind up being too shimmery. Shimmer didn't even exist in '60s makeup. But that's what makes it fun. We work very hard to ensure that the makeup is true to the period.

BBJ: What do you like most about creating a look from such an elegant time period?
LH: I love that the look was always so above and beyond for these women. These aren't looks you can achieve by yourself. They were getting their hair done. They applied glamorous makeup for a dinner with their husbands. It was very non-DIY, and in that respect, it was so unapologetically out of the realm of the mundane/everyday. That's what I like most about it.

BBJ: To what extent do you work with the head of costume design?
LH: Absolutely hand-in-hand. I'm in awe of the head of costume design's talent. There's tons of communication between our department and hers. We're in each others' trailers every day.

BBJ: What movies/television shows either from that era or about that era inspire you?
LH: During the time period specifically for Season 3, there was a change in the look. I was inspired mostly be movies and television from that period. Specifically Cleopatra, with its heavy eye makeup in the form of an Egyptian eye and red lip. I also drew inspiration from Bye Bye Birdie, Funny Girl and Bewitched.

BBJ: What are your methods for achieving both a perfect red lip and the perfect '60s cat eye?
LH: I love Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red , it's one of my favorites. It's so pigmented and boasts the perfect, authentically-'60s dry formula. I also love NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. Typically, I go for an orangey-red, as the lights used for shooting the show can steal blue from the color's registration on camera. NARS' formula also lasts a long time, which I like. MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry is another favorite of mine.

Sheer is the trend now, but unfortunately, that translates into a formula that doesn't last as long. I'm always on the lookout for matte, dry lip products for that reason. I always prep the actresses with La Mer The Lip Balm while they're having their hair done, so it has time to set and absorb. Then, I line their lips heavily, apply lipstick, blot with a touch of powder, then follow with another application of lipstick.

The cat eye is achieved with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, or Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner. I also love Smashbox JET SET Waterproof Eye Liner. Dior's Liquid Eyeliner pen is excellent because it's flexible, like a Sharpie. I always have the actresses look down (but not close their eyes) and cast their glance in the opposite direction of me. Then, I lift up the brow and apply a light line, then retrace it.

BBJ: Are the men of Mad Men rocking makeup as well?
LH: Men get a basic spot check. They don't need much makeup, they're good looking gentlemen. [Lana, are you ever right about that.] On the Mad Men, I use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, which leaves their skin looking a bit natural and ruddy. I like to see freckles and flaws; it looks like real skin. When we're shooting outside, I always make sure to have MAC Blot Film on hand.

BBJ: What are your favorite products?
LH: There are so many! Here's a quick list of some of my favorites:
La Mer Skin Care
Epicuren Skin Care
Dermalogica Skin Care

La Mer Foundation
Giorgio Armani Foundation
Julie Hewett Cheekies (To achieve the authentic cream blushes of the '60s. Powder blush wasn't used until years afterward!)
Laura Mercier Creme Color Pot in Soft Apricot (I blend it all over for a peaches-and-cream complexion)
Andrea and Ardell False Lashes (I use a whole strip for most of the actresses, but sometimes just apply sections of lashes)
Lancome Definicils Mascara
Maybelline Great Lash (for volume, and because it's really inexpensive. We go through a lot of mascara, as you can imagine!)

BBJ: What is your style/techinique?
LH: Because we have to maintain the integrity of the time period, there isn't tons of leeway. But I love to use a lot of liner, lots of lashes, mascara, red lips (I even love a red lip on myself--I do it all the time!), pink blushed cheeks.

BBJ: What's next for you?
LH: Only the universe knows! I'm very happy where I am right now and plan to ride it out. This is truly a dream job. I work on a show that's all about the hair and makeup. The cast is fanastic and I have a fantastic team. I couldn't ask for more.

BBJ: What do you like to do when you're not doing makeup?
LH: I usually sleep! I work 75-hour weeks, so I make sure to drag myself out so that I can socialize. I hang out with my husband. I try to maintain balance and give myself space from work on the weekends.

Thank you to Lana for taking the time to provide me with such thorough, thoughtful responses. AND she did it all whilst working on-set AT the show. She had to whisper "hello" when she answered the phone because they were actually shooting AT THAT MOMENT. Jon Hamm could have potentially been within my (telephonic) EARSHOT. Can you even? Anyway. I look forward to seeing Lana's work on the Season 3 premiere on Sunday, August 16th.
