Finest Hour Week: Guys and Dolls Gloss

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Perfect for prom: Urban Decay introduced their scandalous new Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss this month. It's totes reminiscent of those naked dude pens so popular at such stores as Spencer's Gifts (remember? In the MALL?).

Inside the double-sided cap is a photo of one of eight hot guys. With just the flick of your wrist, you can undress them down to their undershorts, in the words of the fabulous Blanche Devereaux (and each is pictured both front and back)! Thanks to Fashion Binge's Tamron for reminding me of that key Blanche quote, BT dubs ("Know him? Why, I left my undershorts on his radiatah!")

Are you ready for the best part? The lip gloss vial is decorated with pheromone-laced ink. I'm kind of a sucker for pheromones, dolls. I guess everyone is, isn't that the point? Undetectable to smell, releasing even the slightest amount of pheromones enhances mood and sexual attraction. Give the tube a little rub to release the magic. You know it, I know it, and Brenda Walsh certainly knew it: There's no better time than prom for some pheromones. Just saying.

Available in eight shades, this highly-pigmented lip gloss formula even plumps. It contains Hyaluronic Spheres (found naturally in the body) to improve cellular function, prevent dehydration, and fill in lines and wrinkles. Each shade is semi-sheer, but UD designed them with multiple finishes: cream, shimmer or sparkle.

Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss is available for $18 at Sephora.com, ULTA and select Macy’s West locations.

America Ferrera's Makeup at the Kids' Choice Awards

Celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali created the look for America Ferrera at the Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday night. I ADORE the color of her pinky-red dress. Here's the scoop, straight from Vanessa, on how to re-create America's glamorous look.

First, before applying any makeup, Vanessa prepped the skin with Lancôme Genifique, a youth activating concentrate that improves tone, texture and luminosity giving the skin a natural glow. To create a flawless complexion, Vanessa used both Lancôme Effacernes concealer and Armani Lasting Silk UV SPF 20 Foundation. She used Armani Fluid Sheer #2 as a highlighter and applied it with her finger to the cheekbone and brow bone. This gave the complexion a bit of added shimmer. Lancôme Color Design Cream Blush in Pret a Plum was applied to the apples of the cheeks for just a pop of color. Shu Uemura Cream Eye Shadow in Beige was lightly dusted on the eyelid and Lancôme Artliner in Noir was applied to the upper lash line. Several coats of Lancôme Ôscillation mascara were applied to the lashes for added length and volume. To compliment America's pinky/coral frock, Lancôme La Laque Fever gloss in Cyber Coral and Techno Brick were mixed together to create a high-shine pout.

Emma Roberts' "All Growns Up" Makeup at the Kids' Choice Awards

Celebrity makeup artist Geoffrey Rodriguez created a sophisticated look for actress Emma Roberts using Dior Beauty at the Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday.

"Emma loves fashion and usually has a good idea of how she wants to look based on what she is wearing," said Rodriguez. "She also just turned 18, so we are seeing a more sophisticated and grown-up side of her emerging."

Here's Geoffrey's line-up of Dior products:
Eyes: Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Beige Messai combined with black kohl smudged around the lashes and tons of DiorShow Iconic Mascara.
Lips: Dior Ultra-Gloss Reflect in Trenchcoat Beige
Cheeks: Dior Pro Cheeks in Peachy Keen

Vanessa Hudgens' Neutrogena Makeup at the Kids' Choice Awards

Celebrity makeup artist Karen Mitchell created Vanessa HudgensKids' Choice Awards look with budget-friendly Neutrogena products. She shared her methodology (to use a work-esque word) for us below. Wouldn't this look be phenom for prom? I'm a POET.

“Vanessa’s look was really fun and more casual then most red carpet events. Her accessories and outfit were really rock and roll inspired so we went for a fun, smokey eye and a pretty shimmer to the skin,” says Mitchell

Face:

“For her glowing skin we began with Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Liquid Makeup in Tan, and 3-in-1 Concealer for Eyes in Medium. Then, I set that with the Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation in natural beige.”

Eyes:

“By applying a bit of concealer to the lid first, you can achieve a great base for eyeshadow. We used the Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Concealer Kit in Medium on Vanessa. It gives a really natural coverage. For the eyeshadow, I chose the Neutrogena Nourishing Quad in Moonlit violet. I used the silvery highlight shade in the palette on the inside of the top and bottom of the eye. The crease (wine) and accent (smoke) colors from the quad were blended at the outside of the lid corners blending out and up into the crease. I also lined the eye underneath with the crease wine color.”

“Then I lined the entire eye with Neutrogena Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black, and I brushed brows with a soft toothbrush and filled in with accent color from the Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Quad in Sea Shell – it made the perfect brow powder. Finally, we curled the lashes and added four coats of Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara in Carbon Black.”

Lips:
“To finish her look, Vanessa’s lip color is a layer of MoistureShine Lipstick in Sheer Luck and MoistureShine Gloss In Whisper.”

Bumble and bumble Partners with Broadway's HAIR

Rock musical HAIR will open on Broadway tomorrow evening and Bumble and bumble partnered with the sold-out production by the Public Theater last summer, and will continue its support for the Broadway run. Bumble and bumble editorial hairstylist Rolando Beauchamp, who has worked with Mary Kate Olsen, Kristen Davis and Christina Applegate, provides some styling tips for anyone who wants to get this loose, natural flower child look that’s great for spring:

For wavy or curly hair:

The key is keeping the hair’s natural texture, just helping it out with some product that gives it some support. Spritz Bb Surf Spray ($22) onto damp hair, and work about a quarter size amount of Bb Styling Creme ($23) into hair, mid-shaft to ends. The combination of Surf Spray and Styling Creme gives the right texture – a bit dry, not greasy. Dry with a diffuser or let air dry if it is warm out. The key is not to brush or comb out, just finger style and let it be free!

For straight hair:

Begin just like curly/wavy technique with Bb. Surf Spray and Styling Creme, but you’ll need at waves to the hair. Using a 1 inch barrel curling iron, take 1 inch diameter sections of hair and roughly wrap the hair around the iron. The goal is to create bends and waves in the hair, not perfect curls. Then scrunch the section up and pin to the head. Continue curling sections, wrapping the hair in alternating directions, then scrunching and pinning the sections until the entire head is pinned up. Let the hair set for a few minutes, then undo sections. Don’t brush the sections out, just finger style.

Products are available at www.bumbleandbumble.com.

Finest Hour Week: It Cosmetics Get Wet Waterproof Highlighter and Bronzer

Oh, hi! I hope you had an excellent weekend and are ready for the first installment of Finest Hour Week, a week-long series where I showcase my favorite prom-ready products!

My first prom rec is It Cosmetics' Get Wet ($32), a waterproof highlighter and bronzer. What? Waterproof? YES! Is there a more apropos venu for waterproof bronzer and highlighter (other than Spring Break, of course) than a prom? I think not.

This compact comes in a fun (albeit slightly scandalous) box of a compact which includes large helpings of the bronzer, sandy shimmery blush, and white shimmer highlighter. Its size is perf for using all over your bod, not just your mug. Shoulders need waterproof tanning, too. And? I tested it out and it really does withstand water and yet is removable with soap and water or makeup remover.

Low Maintenance No More: Beautilizing my Weekend Time

Dolls, moving had made me a very low maintenance, non-glamorous version of myself. You can imagine how happy this made me (not at ALL is the answer). Because weeks of packing and then unpacking had rendered my manicures crapicures, I'd finally had to throw in the towel and go au natural. I think the only person who enjoys that less than I is my gal Michelle.

This weekend, I dedicated a large portion of my time for beautifying my lifestyle. First on the list was a DIY mani/pedi with my new fave spring shade, CHANEL Le Vernis Nail Colour in Orange Fizz. It's been a long time since I've been so obsessed with a hue that I wanted it on my tips AND my toes, but this one is worth it. It's the love child of creamsicle and peach in a glossy, opaque, creamy texture. My toes think they should be on the beach instead of on 23rd Street.

Yesterday, I headed over for my favorite diamond-in-the-rough stylist Matthew James at Sam Brocato to cut my hair for an economical $85. His blow-outs are the best. Even Sam's (the owner of the salon) wife Holly agrees. She came by to say hi while I was there and informed me that he'd done her mane, which looked quite fab and voloisturized. She also told me she'd gotten some extensions woven in simply for color. Great idea, n'est-ce pas?

Sam has some fantastic new products for curly hair, FYI. He sent me home with some of his sulfate-free (always! None of his prods have sulfates!) Curlkarma Curl Energizing Cream ($15). He also has a corresponding Curlkarma Shampoo and Conditioner that I can't wait to try as the weather gets warmer and I begin my straightening embargo.

Lastly, I took advantage of living solo and self-tanned after I'd exfoliated. I used a tip from my pal Dina: I slathered on the scrub before turning on the water in the shower, rubbed it in well, and THEN turned on the shower and rinsed off pre-cleansing. This ensures velvety-smooth skin as you aren't negating the whole process by having the product rinse off in the stream before it does its job. Genius. Now, I've done that with my facial scrubs, but never with my body versions. Do try it out; you'll love love love. I reaquainted myself with an old fave, Borghese Sali Esfoliante Salt Scrub ($38).

Oh, AND. Get excited for Finest Hour Week, starting manana! Finest Hour Week was named after this pivotal scene in one of my fave '80s movies, Teen Witch.

Obviously, the finest hour I'm referencing is my favorite thing in the universe, PROMS. Click here and here for last year's prom articles. P.S. Teens, do you have questions? Send them to me stat, and I'll do my best to get them answered this week! I'll be sharing makeup and hair tips for the biggest of big days. Is it weird that I'm 28 and I adore a prom but couldn't give a fig about weddings?

Parenthetically, did you catch Brad Powell (Dan Gauthier IRL) from Teen Witch in LOST this season? He played Lapidus' ill-fated Ajira Airways co-pilot.

See you Monday for Finest Hour Week!

Dial AntiOxidant Body Wash with Cranberry and AntiOxidant Pearls, Daddy-O.

Friday, March 27, 2009

Just more evidence that I was born in the wrong decade: my unexplainable penchant for TV dinners. Like '50s relics poodle skirts, red lipstick, prissiness (I can't, I'm SANDRA DEE!) and chivalry, these need a for REAL revival.

With TV dinners, your gravy doesn't run into your peas thanks to the sectioned plate, which reminds me of that hilarious ep of Will & Grace when Molly Shannon's character starts crazily competing with Grace's interior design business. When a client asks them to collaborate on a project, Grace makes an analogy for her feelings about working with MS's character: "You know how you don't want your peas to touch your meat? Because the meat is CRAZY?" Classic.

Anywho, my favorite TV dinner is the turkey one (natch), and I always save the delish cranberry situation (located middle, top) for last. I was beyond excited to try Dial's new AntiOxidant Body Wash with Cranberry and Antioxidant Pearls which manages to smell *exactly* like my fave Swanson cran concoction. It's very homey. The wash's formula invigorates while moisturizing and coating skin with anti-aging antioxidants. Despite all the "antis" in that sentence, rest assured I'm very "pro." Best of all? An 18-ounce bottle will cost you a mere $5. If you're more of a bar soap gal, a three-pack of Dial AntiOxidant Bar Soap will set you back $2.49. Can you even? They're GIVING it away.

Get dibs on that action.

Later, gator.

I'll Just Be Over Here Minding My Own (With My Kenzo Cleansing Ice Jelly).

LeVon: Barry baby, Barry baby, you see what I got here
Barry: what have you got there?
LeVon: This is a box of puddin’,
Barry
Barry: what does it say?
LeVon: It says “cook, and chill”
Barry: Aw yeah.
LeVon: and baby, that’s what I do every night. I cook, and then I chill.

Barry: (bump and grinding) Aw yeah.

LeVon: (bump and grinding) Aw yeah.
Barry: And chill!

--Michael Ian Black (Barry) and Thomas Lennon (LeVon) on MTV's The State

Though it's been 13 years since one of my fave shows of all time, The State, has aired, I felt there was no better cultural reference than their $240 worth of pudding sketch with regard to my new fave skin care item, Kenzo Cleansing Ice Jelly. No need to spend $240 to chill with this dreamy cleanser; it costs a fiscally moderate $28. This icy cleanser contains natural ingredients like ginger plant water and ginseng extracts for a luxe cleansing experience. Its formula eradicates traces of makeup and oil whilst soothing skin with its cooling consistency and invigorates with the spicy scent of ginger. I will be packing this on ALL summer weekend jaunts to non-air conditioned Fire Island/Hamptons houses, lest you worry.

Kenzo is swiftly becoming one of my favorite skin care brands. I love their natural ingredients, fantastic performance, and uber-luxurious GORGE packaging. Check my article for Lucky Style Spotter, in which I mention Kenzoki Belle de Jour.

The best part? In the words of G Love, you stick it in the fridge before use to enhance its toning properties. In fact, along with bottles of wine for my guests, it's all I HAVE in my fridge at the mo'.

Simply bust it out, "cook" and then... chill.

Available in April 2009 at kenzousa.com.

Handle with Care.

Oh hello, dolls!

It's been a DOG'S AGE! So, as I mentioned, opening/closing boxes and touching 1000 articles' worth of NEWSPRINT = torture for my hands. No joke, this morning I got a "leather cut" from a leather portfolio--not even a paper cut--because my hands are still that dry.

I need to run out today and buy some Eucerin Intensive Repair Hand Creme ($5), which my friend Lauren introduced me to. It is truly the best. This thick, fast-absorbing lotion provides a "moisture glove" instantly which manages to coat your skin without making you feel greasy. You know? Like when you worry you're going to ruin your outfit? It's not that kind of party. It's fragrance free, so even dudes won't mind using it. And? It lasts foreva-eva (to be said in the voice of OutKast's Andre 3000).

Eucerin's $5 iteration works just as well as my holy grail hand cream, AHAVA Mineral Hand Cream ($19). I'm still going to pick up the AHAVA from time to time, but Eucerin's squat bottle makes it perf for purse packing.

In other news, I have to report that the worst part about moving is packing and unpacking dishes wrapped in newspaper. Have we discussed this? The feel of newspaper to me is the tactile equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. I HATE it. I could barely touch the newspaper article I wrote myself. It's dry and vile AND it leaves a black mess all over your hands. I found myself washing my hands every 3-5 minutes and was glad that my in-rotation hand wash, Essie Purifying Hand Wash ($15) stood up to the task. I lurve its natural, botanical formula that moisturizes with essential oils. Its scent is light, but present enough that I feel de-newsprintified.

Move Update

Hi, dolls!

No, I'm not lying undiscovered under a pile of boxes, I just don't have access to the Interwebs until tonight and I'm still unpacking my new apartment! It's super gorge. I no longer live in a Pantone grave of earth tones. One wall is painted this delightful color, Java Sea by Glidden. It looks fierce with poppy red accents and my brown and white lamp from Pottery Barn Teen (save your judgement, it's awesome).

I'll post some pics once I am reunited (and it feels so good) with my camera! I can't find it at the mo. I have some mage hand cream recs to share once I'm back in action (packing/unpacking makes my mitts SUPER Sahara dry.)

Love ya; mean it,
Amber

Exfoliation Nation.

Friday, March 20, 2009

This week, I'm all about exfoliating.

I "exfoliated" a roommate from my lifestyle yesterday (which unfortunately yielded a side effect of her deciding to "exfoliate" my shoe rack along with her to her new apartment.) Many of my products are being neglected in boxes, but one thing that's still in my bathroom is my Wei East Mulberry Brightening Exfoliating Grains ($26). Smaller than a wet-nap, these individual packets of sloughers can be added to your regularly-scheduled cleanser to remove dulling dead facial skin cells. And who wants those? Not you, dolls. Not you.

My fave part? You can add as many or as few grains as you like for a bespoke scrub that gets you your most magnif skin. I recommend pairing it with Wei East's China Herbal Cleanser ($18) to "keep it real."

The Bluer The Better: Essie's New North Fork Collection

Well I'm on the Downeaster "Alexa"
And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound
I have charted a course to the Vineyard
But tonight I am Nantucket bound

--Billy Joel, Downeaster Alexa

This collection is to die, beauties. I don't typically love a blue, but Essie has nailed it this time with her new limited edition North Fork Collection. They're subtle, grayed-off, dreamy blues evocative of a Long Island boat ride. Appropriately enough, The North Fork Collection is named for the quaint vacation villages perched around the waters of Long Island’s East End .

“The new nail colors remind me of the most beautiful blues that surround The North Fork,” says Essie Weingarten. “Tranquil yet playful, the colors cross over in fashion and in nature.”

Greenport, Sag Harbor and Shelter Island, each named after areas around The North Fork and Long Island Sound, are an homage to the beauty of nature.

GREENPORT - Dreamy aquamarine paradise

SAG HARBOR - Cool silver blue

SHELTER ISLAND - Sky blue radiance

The North Fork Collection is a limited-edition collection, available beginning April 2009 at http://essie.com/ and fine spas, salons and beauty destinations worldwide. $9 each.

New Yorkers: Head to See THE UNSEEN Tomorrow Night

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Girls, I'd never shamelessly plug a friend's... anything on this blog, but I firmly believe you should do yourself a favor and go see Oz Pearlman and Ken Salaz in THE UNSEEN, a two man mind reading and magic act tomorrow night.

This shit is riveting. I'm serious. I met Oz a few months ago through a friend and he performed a few card tricks at the bar we were frequenting, completely apropos of nothing and I nearly accosted him to do like, 13 more tricks much in the manner of a seven-year old. I can't even remember the last time I was that impressed by anything non beauty-related.

The show takes place at:

GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB
208 W 23rd St (between 7th and 8th Ave)
New York, NY 10011 View Map
Tel: 212.367.9000 for tickets and reservations
Website: http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com

If you can't make it tomorrow, the show will take place on the following Thursdays:
March 26
April 2
April 9
April 16
April 30

Check out the video demo of THE UNSEEN and more info at nycunseen.com.

You're welcome,
Amber

Ruffle Rouser: A Round-up of Ruffled Riches

Friends know this about me: I never met a ruffle I didn't like.

My impending move (next Monday, wish me luck!) has left me with zero disposable income, so a couple weeks ago, I decided to make this Hawks by Geren Ford Ruffle Tank from Urban Outfitters ($78) my swan song purchase before moving to my stu stu studio. PS If you buy it, get it a size or two up. I'm normally a small, sometimes a medium, but I needed a large in this.

This Dani Ruffle Boot ($100) from Free People is haunting me. HAUNTING. I know it's going to be one of those things I think about years later, plagued by the OPPOSITE of buyer's remorse. Its hidden wedge heel enchants me. I'd rock it with the shirt above and have a whole ruffle SITUATION. It IS on sale. Just saying.

Lastly, I present thee with the Cha Cha Entourage Bag in Blueberry ($365 - just a dollar a day for a YEAR, right?) I mean, DEATH. Truly, it's not exactly ruffled, but its nonlinear silhouette is EVOCATIVE of a ruffle, right? If this bag graced my closet, it'd surely be the Vincent Chase amongst the other Dramas, Turtles, and Es in my wardrobe. The braided straps are PRESH, n'est-ce pas? I normally don't love to rock blue (I sort of live in a warmer palette), but this cornflower-purple hybrid awakens something in my very SOUL.

What ruffled items are you loving of late? Share in the comments!

Recommended Beauty Reading: The Lancôme Blog

Add it to your readers, dolls: Lancôme has launched a new blog at www.thelancomeblog.blogspot.com. Written by Lancôme VP for public relations and former Harper's Bazaar beauty director Kerry Diamond, the blog will cover all the buzz about the brand, from their hottest products to news about their spokespeople and makeup artists. You'll love Kerry's lively, fun take on everything from her to-do lists to her feelings about Clive Owen. Parenthetically, I agree, Kerry. There are sexy dudes... and THEN there is Clive.

The blog will feature the latest on Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet, Clive Owen, Daria Werbowy, Elettra Wiedemann, Arlenis Sosa, Aaron De Mey, Sandy Linter plus other makeup artists, models and celebs.

Even better? They'll also be doing lots of great giveaways. The brand is giving away ten bottles of Génifique, their new skincare product that is launching this month.

New Offerings from Spanx and Assets

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

So, let's be real with each other.

I'm moving, as you know, and that entails going through ALL of my stuff and separating out the stuff that's seen better days. I just weeded out my tights and camis and I have to tell you that pretty much the last brand standing is Spanx/Assets. Seriously. That shiz is just DURABLE. I have Spanx camis from five or six YEARS ago and Spanx and Assets tights from two years ago that are going to be joining me in my new stu stu studio. In "tights years" especially, that's an eternity. SATC's Miranda Hobbes couldn't even use her "I've had pantyhose longer than their relationship" joke with regard to Spanx and Assets. Because anyone who's rocked either knows they're super strong. Spanx has launched several new patterns:

New Patterns:
Trinket, Houndstooth, Corset, Gate, & Garter; Colors: Black, Bittersweet, & Charcoal

New Open Weave Patterns:
Damask & Chain Stripe; Colors: Black & Nude

I'm loving the Trinket pattern in the gorge Charcoal. I've gotten tons of compliments on them.

Also, Assets (Spanx's more budget-friendly line) has launched its own website at loveassets.com. I recommend you stock the heck up on:

Assets Fantastic Firmers Adjustable Strap Cami ($20-22)
These suck you in and boast a curvy shape to take your hips into account (because Assets acknowledges that we HAVE them).

Lastly, Spanx's high end lingerie-inspired line, Haute Contour, has launched! Hailed "the dessert of shapewear," this collection is both pretty and powerful. The line boasts lace and sexy sheer shaping camis with flattering necklines and soft, supporting micro-fiber. They can be worn inside or outside the boudoir. Saucy. There are also two mid-thigh shapers and a luxe lace thong. Haute Contour pieces come in Blush, Sterling and Pitch, sizes XS-L. Prices range from $88-$198.
